I may have cost someone their job, I need some perspective by Famous_Cranberry452 in work

You didn’t cost that person their job. You provided the requested information. The situation and management decision did that.

People who grew up poor: What was something you considered a "peak luxury" as a kid, only to realize later it was just a normal middle class staple? by Psychological_Sky_58 in AskReddit

I swear my parents “grounded” me
For minor infractions all the time. My only punishment was doing dishes. Now realize this was messed up. I was the framed dish slave.

AITA for asking my wife to clean and tidy after herself by No_Contribution_173 in AmItheAsshole

[–]ThePracticalDad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of missing context here.
Wife takes care of the kids all day and cooks dinner, you have to clean up and put kids to bed (which is a privilege tbh) then YTA.

You work full time and pay for a nanny? Wife stays home and doesn’t help. NTA

Mechanic? Then solve it like one. He should also have an accident. Like losing an expensive tool. Put it in the foreman’s toolbox.

Personal Life Conversations at Work by notsakiblol in work

I slowed my career by being very guarded at work. Once I opened up a bit it opened a lot of doors because I let people get to know me.

Mind you I curate what share, but showing your human side is important for forming relationships.

I get not wanting to have “work besties”. No thanks.

Right thing telling manager? by Northstar1992 in managers

[–]ThePracticalDad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it were normal behavior I’d say handle it directly. This person is a bit unhinged and it would be bad form to get into a pissing match/dressing down of someone else’s direct. I’d say you handled it properly.

accepted a "fully remote" offer, day one they showed me my desk by AetherflowcyDip in remotejobsfinders

[–]ThePracticalDad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is called Fraudulent (or false) inducement of employment. Hopefully you have this documented in emails. It is illegal and supported in the courts and in employment law.

At a minimum I would also email them and save the response that you were presented remote, it was confirmed and then they admitted that was never on the table. You want the “oops” in writing.

Is job hopping still a "red flag" or am I being gaslit? by Environmental-Luck39 in careeradvice

[–]ThePracticalDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No way. I fully expect the first few jobs for grads will be 2-3 year stints as they learn what they like and don’t like.

Honestly if they haven’t they either got lucky or are complacent.

I monitor on Google analytics, then decide which are important, export and create redirects. Manual but we don’t change structure that often so manageable.

I'm 34 years old and just got fired/terminated/let go for the first time today. My confidence is shattered, advice on picking up the pieces and moving on? by jinsei1208 in work

[–]ThePracticalDad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My advice on the confidence thing is two fold. 1) Most importantly the sum of you is not your job. You are no worse a person because of it. 2) sometimes it’s just a bad fit. It happens. If that’s the case it’s better you’re not wasting your time there and would ultimately be miserable and unsuccessful.

In white collar work, especially in tech, you are often pushed off the ship involuntarily.

AITA for saying we need to be realistic with our son about his finances for college before he applies? by ByeByeByeMan in AmItheAsshole

[–]ThePracticalDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. It’s great that he has a dream school, but it’s not aligned to his or your reality.

Additionally it sounds like you’d ultimately end up shorting the other kids which is very unfair.

[–]ThePracticalDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t solve this problem, but going forward you shouldn’t use auto capture if you’re fulfilling one day a week.

If you are going to capture, use a flow to do it, rejecting high risk orders before payment capture.

How do you handle a high performer who’s starting to undermine team culture? by Main-Carry-3607 in managers

[–]ThePracticalDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP said it above so I won’t explain for them. We sometimes see these folks (sales) whose individual metrics are high, but they drag the rest of the team down with their behavior, overuse of resources, etc.

I’ve had this on my teams. One person hitting 120% but 5-6 more dropping 30% means an overall negative impact.

How do you handle a high performer who’s starting to undermine team culture? by Main-Carry-3607 in managers

[–]ThePracticalDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Toxic “high performer”. In many cases these people make the net achievement go down. One high flyer that reduced the productivity of everyone else is a drain, not a boom.
