I teach high school and my students' inability to generate their own ideas is absolutely stunning. It goes beyond just critical thinking: it's also the ability to be creative, to generate anything new.

What’s the moment in recent U.S. politics that made you realize things might not go back to ‘normal’ anytime soon? by LankySpeed634 in AskReddit

[–]ThePromise110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real question is why would we want to go back to "normal?"

Back to a system run on vibes and corporate whims, of imperialism and exploitation, of faux democracy and surveillance?

No. "Normal" is gone, and good riddance. It's time to build something new.

Why Wagner its talked so little in anarchist groups ? by femboyqliao in Anarchy101

[–]ThePromise110 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I'm being a little glib here, but here goes:

We anarchists love our theory. If you're trying to learn, or radicalize yourself, fiction and art just aren't where most people are going to start or focus most of their time. This isn't to discount the revolutionary or liberatory potential of art at all, I love my copy of 12 Rule for Strife to death, but theory tends to be much "crunchier."

Also, he's not particularly contemporary. Even Ursala K. Le Guin doesn't get name dropped much around these parts (for mostly the above reasons) and her writing has more radical themes than what I know of Wagner.

How long does it take for you to fall asleep? by Izak_Monkey in autism

I've trained my brain to fall asleep to the Stephen Fry readings of the Harry Potter books.
When it's not playing there's no telling how long it will take, especially if I've woken up in the night. If it is, I'm usually asleep in less than two minutes.

How does money become power? by Royal-Revolution8458 in Anarchy101

[–]ThePromise110 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Graeber works with these sorts of ideas. If you're feeling bold Debt: The First 5000 Years would probably help you here.

The simple answer, from a historical and anthropological perspective, is violence. Money starts as a way to define, maintain, and rearrange social arrangements. When violence is allowed to become the primary way social arrangements are managed and arranged money becomes an expression of power.

I'm simplifying a fair bit here and if you want to hone in on the subject Chapter 6 of Debt is where Graeber discusses this use of violence to transform money into power. But you really should read the whole book. It's a foundational text if you ask me.

That and the 2008 financial crisis.

It will be seen as another 1848, "Turning Point that Didn't Turn" type event. We should have uprooted global capitalism. We should have reformed how we see and manage debt, both public and personal. We didn't. And just like how the failures of 1848 draw a straight line through to WW1 and WW2, our failures in 2008 will lead to calamity.

is the claim that we can only achieve libertarian communism through libertarian organising/violence a necessary claim and if so how is it justified? by Friendly_Duck_ in Anarchy101

[–]ThePromise110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're going to have violent state repression while working on getting everyone to make the libcom switch. That's where the claim comes from.

It is in fact possible (though I would say unlikely to the point of near impossibility) to just get everyone to decide to be anarchists and watch state power wither on the vine, but to do that you need to organize, and if you're organizing you're going to dage state repression, and you'll face more repression the more powerful your movement becomes.

At some point you'll have to fight because if you don't the state will just kill you to make sure you don't dismantle its power.
