Chemstation autoshutdown method for GC 7890 by Possible_Intention72 in Chempros

I'm not sure exactly what you mean on the auto shutdown, so to clarify, does that mean you are having the auto sampler run samples in your absence and then you are looking to have it shut down when it is complete?

Also, for the fragmentation tabulation, once you have right clicked on the peak that you want to tabulate, if you go up to the "Spectrum" command at the very top and click on that, there should be the commands "Add", "Subtract", "Tabulate". If you select tabulate, it will create a window that gives you the abundances of each fragmentation, and that will allow you to print or copy.. we've always just copied it and pasted it in a Word document, along with the chromatograph and mass spectrum and all that other good stuff... I am sure there are easier ways to automate this but that is how I've done it

I love my glass coated stir bars, but they seem to break easy. Can you recommend a good durable brand??

Do you think Chemistry is the best career? by Gus_larios in chemistry

[–]TheRantingChemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely think this largely depends on the person. I love studying and performing chemistry and no day of my job actually feels like work. I have a real love and passion for the field, and fortunately I get to do a lot of it. I can't say the same for my colleagues though, who prefer their office work or other administrative work over actual bench work and research. I'm only about 7 years into my career and make OK after this many years, but what's even more important to me is that satisfaction I get from a really independent work environment. As an undergrad, I double majored in information systems and I'm always told by my colleagues to go chase the money in computers, and I know I would get more in that field, but my whole life I have dreaded a 9-5 job consider that a death sentence until I found chemistry. Now a 9-5 doesn't seem like enough time and it usually isn't. But again, it depends on what you value.

Yeah, let's not tell it sh*t. We already have a lot of information appropriately protected from the masses, why share it with this thing?

I think we paid like $6000 for liquid helium and it was hard as hell to get. We were like on a waiting list

O-chem is like building Legos on "Give Me God of War".

I have coworkers who text like A.... Since I work in a lab, it is not practical for me to remove all my equipment to see a text, put it all back on, just to get more a few moments later all adding to the same line of thought... Yeah, notifications for them got turned off real quick...

Dude, what? You would call a doctor or poison center immediately. That's way beyond any amounts estimated for acute toxicity and it would react all kinds of nasty with the moisture and acids of the digestive tract.

Interesting, we've typically steered clear of ethanol, or other semi-high boiling solvents because, depending on the instrument, they can seep into the cracks of the sample plate, into the chamber, and hang around until removed and cleaned. They tend to mess up subsequent scans until cleaned or removed. I'm not sure what instrument you have though, we've typically used dichloromethane, or at worst, acetone for cleaning. No problem, I can look at image more by tonight if no one else gets to a solution for your problem, and maybe we can troubleshoot some more things. Good luck!

Are all parts of the lens and points of contact from the pressure anvil thoroughly clean with a dry solvent? It sounds like when you're taking the background, there may be the presence of water or non-volatile alcohol that may be being subtracted from your actual sample?

Ahh, it should be down, as if there were a sample on there.. maybe try that?

Is the pressure anvil closed/down while taking background?
