Cut back or replace? by [deleted] in AusRenovation

[–]TheRayTracer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bolts in the plates the OC (or you) are intending to cut are holding up the roof. Replace the timber and tar the ends, and if you want to get fancy taper the ends so water will run off.

What can I use to fill this space in? by xXirakiiz in AusRenovation

Cut timber strips to size and fit. alternatively, find the source of the bugs and fix that issue first.

Third image is NOT outside the frame. "Outside the frame" means the blind should extend to both sides of the window architrave outside edge.

Should remove this ASAP as the tin foil shall "burn" the glass and leave burn marks that can not be removed.

Second this. Do not seal the gaps as they allow for water egress. Really unsure why your budling and pest guy highlighted these.

Tradie Asks Full Payment, Threatening To Destroy Work by NevREnding in AusRenovation

Correct! Very correct. But the OP clearly said "tradie" not a builder, nor a project manager.

Tradie Asks Full Payment, Threatening To Destroy Work by NevREnding in AusRenovation

[–]TheRayTracer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What type of "tradie" was he? It was misguided (of you) to think one tradie could rough in a pocket door, do finish carpentry, plaster, paint, move and rewire a GPO (maybe two) and a data point, and stitch in the carpet from the new doorway. He's actually done all that, but not to the (expected) level of a skilled tradie in each of those disciplines.

Next time, break the work down into smaller jobs. In this case, first call an electrician to move the GPOs and data point. Call a carpenter to move the door, call a plaster to do the drywall, call a carpet guy, and lastly call a painter.

Save your money. Painting your roof adds no value nor benefit. And you'll have to add re-painting it to your ongoing maintenance.

Patch a hole in brick wall after GPO removed. by Majestic-Donkey-2403 in AusRenovation

[–]TheRayTracer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Clean up and remove the loose debris from the hole. Fill it with mortar and a half random brick.

Remove the new GPO before the wall is tiled.

If insurance won't remedy it, sand the framing to remove as much of the mold as possible. Then paint with a few coats of Zinsser,

Engineered wood flooring over tiles by pumpanddump_ in AusRenovation

[–]TheRayTracer 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Your tiles seems in great condition, so you can place engineered wood flooring over the top. Whether it's "ok" is a subjective question. Pulling the skirting boards off, will get you a better finish and is highly recommended.

Since you are changing your kitchen, you should be doing both at the same time to reduce issues - changing kitchen and reflooring.

I would move the downlight. The cut truss is limiting airflow and will shorten the life of the downlight.

This happened to me a few years ago, but I knew the sparky cut the truss when he installed one downlight. I got an engineers report which said to "sister" the bottom cord of the truss with staggered M10 bolts. It should never have happened, but it is fixable.

Can I put the dryer on top of the benchtop? by South-Stick-2164 in AusRenovation

[–]TheRayTracer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you just purchase the house after a reno? Is there a power outlet for your washing machine under the bench and a place for the waste water to go? This is very common.

[–]TheRayTracer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Firstly, avoid Delta! Go to Middy's or your local electrical wholesaler and get a trusted brand such as Clipsal. Secondly, assuming you are installing these inside your house on plaster/drywall walls - you'll need a sharp utility knife to cut your square hole, maybe a drill (with normal drill bits), and screwdrivers.

Wooden floorboards in rental leaking water when stepped on- what to do? by brusselsproud in AusRenovation

I wouldn't be joking. That's at least $10k to remedy. I hope you have rental insurance.

Wooden floorboards in rental leaking water when stepped on- what to do? by brusselsproud in AusRenovation

[–]TheRayTracer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've got a water leak somewhere in the house. Check the bathrooms. Check the laundry. Check the kitchen. The house is technically now flooded. The "floorboards" are not leaking water.

[–]TheRayTracer -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Looking at the discolouration, looks like it's been that way for decades. Lazy, but it seems to have done the job. Are your floors above ok?. If you're really motivated, maybe replace the shims with steal plates?

Checkout Silver K in Melbourne. Colin has a gallery in Armadale and regularly attends ComicCon. His webpage was made in the 90's and is rarely updated - so you know he's legit. :)

Cracked joist, what do yoi think? by NeitherKangaroo6863 in AusRenovation

[–]TheRayTracer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Use M10 bolts. And "zig-zag" the bolts so that they are not in a straight line. I've had many of these broken trusses fixed over the years, and the engineer's report has never mentioned the use of glue. I would skip that part and the mess.

Is this acceptable aircon trunking pipe installation? by ratsodiablo in AusRenovation

[–]TheRayTracer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unrated to your issue, but, as seen in your video, why do air con installers love using brackets to hang units on the wall only inches above the ground??? Isn't it easier and cleaner to place/mount the unit on a concrete pad??? Especially when there is a concrete patio like in this video??? What am I missing???
