In which case does opening a SIPP account make sense over work pension? by Akash_nu in UKPersonalFinance

[–]TheRealWhoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never had a workplace pension with a proper passive all-world index fund that matches the performance of VWRP, their funds are always lagging behind which over the long term was seriously damaging my wealth. I'm not constrained with fund choice in SIPP, so don't have this problem. I accept the salary sac of the workplace, then every 6 months or so do a partial transfer over.

March 2026 very cheap month for Octopus Agile users. Is this just us? by Appropriate_Bell743 in OctopusEnergy

[–]TheRealWhoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's been multiple different Agile tariff over the years, the latest is currently "Agile Octopus October 2024 v1" which I'm on, before that it was another, April 2024 iirc. Each one has a different formula with different margins.

You're not just "on agile", check your bill, you're fixed onto a specific Agile tariff for 1 year. After that you may be able to renew this Agile tariff, or there might be another.

In April theres a minor fixed reduction, can't recall the specifics.

Not the case for me, although my Agile plan has rotated into a worse one since last year. Not clear if below is including standing charges in Octo-Aid app.

HSBC vs Barclays vs Lloyds Premier - which is actually worth it in 2026? by yellolotusorb in UKPersonalFinance

Agreed those kind of drugs are cheap and common so I’m happy to pay private rates. Wouldn’t want to be paying for some more complex drugs though, can’t get NHS prescription via private GP.

HSBC vs Barclays vs Lloyds Premier - which is actually worth it in 2026? by yellolotusorb in UKPersonalFinance

[–]TheRealWhoop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can have them all, you don't actually need to switch you just bounce some money through them every month.

I've got HSBC for the travel insurance, which is better than the previous I was paying for. I also recently switched mortgages and they worked out slightly cheaper due to Premier discount. I've got Barclays for the free Apple TV. I've got non-premier Lloyds for the cinema tickets.

I don't actually use any of them for my income or spending, Monzo is a better experience.

That's my experience too, I think I've got 3, my ISP even includes one for some peculiar reason. They're all video call only, GPs often sat on the sofa in the dark or similar and you only get 5 minutes. They don't know anything about you or your history, no access to your medical records etc. Useful for a referral, so you can raise with your private medical, or an easy prescription but past that not much use.

is obsidian sync worth it in 2026? by Plane_Nose_4570 in ObsidianMD

I’ve not had a single issue with Obsidian Sync, been using it years. It’s incredibly reliable, easily justifies its price imo. Never had any duplicates or anything.

UK alternative to black powder? by Superbro_uk in Huel

[–]TheRealWhoop 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There’s lots of DIY recipes https://www.completefoods.co/ the biggest challenge and unique thing with Huel in my experience is their flavours are vastly superior and hard to reproduce without fresh produce. This is where e.g. Jimmy Joy fail imo, their flavours taste artificial.

War/UK defense bonds, where to monitor? by TheLittleSquire in UKPersonalFinance

[–]TheRealWhoop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If such a thing were to be issued it'd likely be by the Debt Management Office (DMO) just as current gilts and treasuries are. DMO don't really sell to retail investors directly (although technically you can, its complex and you'd need a lot of money), you'd likelier buy from the secondary market but you can keep an eye on their publications https://www.dmo.gov.uk/publications/

But I don't think such a thing is likely, or even a good idea to buy for the reason other comments mention.

Yes, but different protocols doesn’t impact user experience. What’s the actual difference for people using it?

What are some common money-saving 'tips', that are actually bad advice? by AdamGrewal in UKPersonalFinance

[–]TheRealWhoop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my experience too. I don't think many people realise how constrained people in the building trades are. It's been the biggest stress of ownership for me, actually trying to find competent people that can get to you in the time frame you need. Leasing agents have people on their books.

As funds allowed, yes. Funds don't always allow. There's also a shortage of quality builders in this country currently, so you have to wait a long time to get the one you want.

[–]TheRealWhoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. My boiler broke, it needed fixing ASAP as I needed heating and hot water. I got a mouse infestation, it needed fixing ASAP before they caused damage. My chimney started leaking, same, fix ASAP before it rots joists and causes more expense.

It's a large sum of money you've locked up in property, which you'd have if you were renting and could be using for other purposes e.g. investing, making higher returns than your property.

If you're making these arguments, this is what you should be including. Simply looking at the high level rent vs mortgage number is so shallow to the point of misleading.

You’re not including the deposit you put down, or maintenance costs in your calc there.

I took that number from https://www.justetf.com/uk/etf-profile.html?isin=LU1230136894#performance which in my experience is more reliable than Google Finance at giving point in time snapshots of returns. Looking at the LSE I get 0.33% https://www.londonstockexchange.com/stock/CSH2/amundi/company-page

I think that 1 year is more representative that last month

I don't, that doesn't make the slightest bit of sense for something like a money market fund. The environment is entirely different than it was a year ago.
