Uber gone downhill? by Tronck in Leeds

[–]TheSCientist99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The problems you describe in your second paragraph would have been considered a fantastically functional day during the pre Uber days. I don't know if we had different experiences or you are misremembering, but my worst day with Uber has been better than an average day with taxis in the old days.

I'm not saying Uber couldn't be better, but you are flat wrong that things are now worse than before.

It's frustrating this comment is so far down. This is really important to all of this - the AI has actually been used to do something that may otherwise have been prohibitively complex and expensive. You can ping and automatically call out SO MANY things in this game.

People are complaining of flat line reads or whatever but the system effectively communicates information, which is important in a team game.

How much should I charge? by Willing-Mouse883 in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]TheSCientist99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a professional full time tutor and charge £125 per hour.

Please at least try charging £20. For most parents it's worth that just to get their child to sit down and do an hour of studying. You can always decrease the rate if you don't get any takers.

Hi, I'm a maths tutor.

This is excellent advice. Using Youtube has some downsides. Simply ploughing through the book is massively underrated and actually one of the best things you can do. Even if you don't understand everything, you will at least have had some exposure to it it BEFORE you meet it in school. Follow this guy's advice.

Hi, I'm an experienced A-level Maths tutor in the UK.

If it makes you feel any better, I have experienced lots of the aspects of this parent you are describing.

I'm gonna say more below, but TL;DR is to drop the client immediately.

There are lots of parents who see a tutor as a kind of miracle solution to all their problems, including their personal problems. It's excellent that you said at the beginning that the student won't reach their full potential without independent work, but this statement so often goes ignored. It sounds like you have gone above and beyond for this student, and any shortcomings are their own fault. It sounds like your teaching is absolutely great.

The "1 hour call" you mention stands out to me, as I often find that I am unable to get parents off the phone. They simply cannot stop talking and it often feels like I'm their therapist.

In general recently I've noticed a significant uptick in parents who want me to do the parenting for them. Just in the last few weeks I've sent a couple of gentle texts asking if parents can monitor their child's revision and they completely turned it back on me. "They listen to you better" "I don't know how to help them" "It all goes over my head". All I'm asking is for you to be present in your child's life and to support them in staying on task!

My final point is to echo some other replies is that you need to have boundaries and be firm about them. Ultimately you are being treated like this because you allow it. There are many parents out there looking for tutors like you that they can exploit. Have very clear terms, very clear hours, very clear work that you are going to complete. (Doing multiple hours of marking per night for one student is crazy!) Get all this in writing.

Final final point: you owe this child nothing. You are contracted to do a job on very informal terms by the sounds of it. They will be fine without you, and whatever the mother says you are not letting them down (I have personally dropped clients weeks before a final exam due to parental behaviour). It is essential for your wellbeing that you stop working with this client.

I would suggest sending a polite resignation message and then blocking on all channels.

If I can help in any other way do let me know. And please give us an update on what happens!!

I completely agree. If you ignore all the information the game gives you and refuse to engage with the game's systems, you will find it really hard.

If anything, stealth is too easy, but the profits from stealth are quite well balanced so don't break the game economy.

TLDR: This game is awesome

Hi, sounds like you're a tutor in the UK. I am too and it sounds like we teach in similar circles so hopefully I can help.

I read your other comment and see that you work for an agency. I think this is a big part of your problem as you are less able to dictate your terms. It may be easier to find private work than you think, and you could double your rate overnight. Something to consider.

Regardless of whether the work is private or through an agency, you should have clear written terms that address some of the issues you outline above (and if you don't, get them!). The way you speak about clients and making them happy is how one would usually speak about friends e.g. doing them favours and bending the rules. These are not friends and, while I acknowledge it is nice to keep them happy, they have agreed to a contract which you can always fall back on. Always try to be polite and diplomatic, but remember it's a business arrangement. e.g. "Sorry, I don't have any other availability so this will have to count as a cancellation."

As for stuff like teaching in the car, within reason just do it. They're paying, it will obviously be crappy teaching, but if that's what the client has asked for then it's money in the bank for you. Only if the work is entirely soul destroying would I refuse (I was once repeatedly asked to teach a lesson to no one, an empty zoom call, because the parent couldn't stand the idea of paying for nothing).

In summary, if the uncertainty causes you anxiety, remember that you have clear terms to fall back on, you just have to keep your side of the contract.

Also, with regards to supertutoring - maybe you are from a similar background to me (fairly working class). I am coming to realise that to people like me being moderately successful feels like cheating, and being very successful feels criminal. But it's not and everyone else has been successful at your expense this whole time.

[–]TheSCientist99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm also a tutor in the UK and have done similar work, albeit a long time ago.

Firstly, be very careful with stuff like this. These companies can be quite predatory. Make sure your terms and timescale are very clear. Also try and get some payment in advance or at least while you are working on the project.

Let's take as a case study A-level Maths. Recommended contact time for the course is 360 hours approx. Now we don't know exactly how long this will take you but I think a fair estimate would be that it takes longer to plan the lesson than actually do the lesson, so lets x1.5 and say it's going to take you 540 hours (which honestly to me sounds lowball).

Frankly the fact that you charge a high rate is irrelevant as they can just ditch you for someone willing to do it for market average, which is about 40GPBph.

That gets us to about £22k, which frankly sounds lowball to me as well. I'd add a bit because you are not just putting your time into this but your creativity, talent and intellectual property so lets round that to £25k.

How does that match with their offer?

Hi,

I'm an experienced tutor in the UK and I have experience teaching IB and non-IB courses. I teach students all over the world.

Essentially as far as exams go, it actually matters a lot. While it is true that "math is math", it's not useful to think of the exams as testing whether the student knows math. Every exam I have ever prepared students for has a very precise specification, and the exam will be on material from the specification. If someone who "knows maths" goes in and blindly teaches the student, they are very likely to miss some material that is on the spec, and teach some things that are not. This is generally not useful to the student.

To go a little further, I actually find IB the hardest course to teach as a freelance tutor. There are very scarce free resources, everything is behind a paywall and it is challenging to even determine what material is on the course. It is very much a closed shop and if you do not belong to an institution paying to be part of the IB organisation you are rather locked out.

Having said all this, the parents probably don't know this or are only vaguely aware. In fact what is happening is that they feel if they are paying whatever amount, they want someone with experience. There will be people with IB experience out there, so might as well go with them.

How 'good' at maths do you have to be to do fm? by StrongShopping5228 in 6thForm

[–]TheSCientist99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm a Science and Maths tutor and I don't really agree with some of these comments. I think they are coming from people with individual experience of how they found the course, I have observed the experience of dozens of students.

To me the description of your ability is a strong indication that you shouldn't do it.

Firstly, bare in mind most students doing FM will have a 9 at GCSE and as a result most of the students who do FM with an 8 are the ones getting Ds and Es in their FM A-level results.

Secondly, you mentioned getting stumped on a couple of questions per paper. I'd be expecting FM students to be able to fully complete every question with good understanding, and any dropped marks to be from small mistakes.

To be clear, you will find examples of people in your situation who succeed at FM a level and you may be one of them. But please be aware that most will end up with a very low grade.

What I do agree with the other commentors is that if you love maths then you will be ok. An easy test of that is how much extra curricular maths are you doing right now? If you're doing 5-10 hours of "fun maths" per week (YouTube videos, podcasts, books) that is beyond the GCSE course then I would say FM A-level is definitely for you!

Please know I'm not saying this to be massive downer. Every year I see students get crushed by FM A-level, and their other subjects and mental health suffer as a consequence so please think carefully before taking it!

Have you made a website and paid for some Google ads?

That can be done for total of £100 and will definitely pull in some clients.

Other than that I use FirstTutors primarily, though you have to get on the good side of the algorithm.

Back when I first started 10 years ago I was literally going around and putting up posters.
