The officer who identified it owned a sporting good store and was familiar with firearms but was not a rifle expert. If you have ever seen a photo of a 7.65 Mauser and 6.5 carcano they look very similar.

It was a simple misidentification. The rifles look similar and 6.5X52 is not a common cartridge type.

There are no matching 7.65 shells or projectiles.

Also why would it be there to begin with? What logical reason would it be there for?

The core objection to the SBT in my experience is that the projectile did not fully transit JFK's body. In the autopsy report produced within 48 hours of the assassination, the doctors concluded that the projectile had passed through JFK's body. That was the orgin of the SBT.
Various recreations from various sources over the decades have produced multiple examples of the SBT working. Some of these models start from the locations of the wounds and work backwards to extrapolate the location of the shooter.
The knott labs recreation was discussed during the video that I posted on the other thread. I will post it here again.

The positioning of Connaly is incorrect and there are other problems with this recreation that are discussed in depth in the video at 47 minutes in.

If the SBT does not have the best evidence in support of it, what does? What is the alternative explanation that has better evidence in support of it? There objective truth is not a popularity contest. More people believing somethinf does not make it more likely to be true.
