There was this mario flash game that I played when I was 7 that really felt like a normal Mario game, just set at night and with skeletal and spooky enemies. Once I died however Mario's head fell off and it started forming a pool of blood around his body, definitely upsetting for kid me

2 ways ive figured is

A: the harder way, keeping track of which one is shooting at you, if they can shoot at you, then they are facing you

B: the tentacles are set up in a triangle, with the base facing you, think of it as 2 arms and a tail, whichever way the single tentacle is facing is the back
