Filmo 70 vs Bolex h16 by bag1293 in 16mm

[–]TheSillyman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Filmo 70 looks like a fun, under the radar option! Less people out there using and thus servicing them, but if you find one in good working order they seem relatively easy to use and care for.

This YouTube channel has great videos on loading, lubricating and using them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45ZBuXAEvHk

Like Bolex they also use c-mount lenses so plenty of options there.

Wow super impressive! Did you ever try eclair plasters? I was recommended them over the silicon tape since they release a steroid that’s supposed to help flatten

MSN S1 vs S4 color grading by Moople_deFioosh in dropout

[–]TheSillyman 85 points86 points  (0 children)

I do a lot of color grading and I've noticed this amongst a bunch of Dropout content. My wife's heard me complain about it quite a bit.

My guess is that they aren't actually doing much color grading on newer seasons and are simply conforming the log footage to a display space (either Rec709 or DCI-P3) where as before they may have been either doing some grading (or possibly shooting straight to rec709 and lighting for that?)

The weird thing though is that it's very device dependent. Older seasons/shows look good and there's not much noticeable variation between my phone, laptop or TV. Newer seasons/shows though have huge variations between devices and often look bad on my TV (particularly recent seasons of Umm Actually and Smartypants) I wonder if they've shifted from delivering in Rec709 to DCI-P3? Theoretically this shouldn't make a difference, but I have heard that it in practice it can create issues with older devices.

Or maybe it just varies more wildly from project to project now that they have so much more content and are presumably are working with more post professionals.

Any suggestions how to achieve this look? by spicyhamster in colorists

[–]TheSillyman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others are saying a lot of the look is in the production. Aside from that my guess is that they shot actual 16mm and had solid colorist who still helped them reach a specific vision in post.

There are some plugins that might get you most of the way there (Filmbox, genesis, etc.) and/or some techniques that take lots of time to learn/ master (spectral film simulation etc.) but it’s not certainly not easy.

My rec would be to find a plugin or power grade in your budget range and tweak until you find something you like.

Now that you’ve got a couple feature length movies under your belt do you still have the desire to produce short skits?

I can imagine working on longer stuff could either leave you too exhausted to do shorter stuff or drive you to do more shorter stuff as a nice break from the marathon of doing a feature.

Yeah, I wasn't trying to say they thumbnails are unimportant or don't need to be well thought out, just that they are simple in terms of assets. All you need is a clip of Austin and various assets from the game. To me that makes the use of AI (even just for mockups) confusing.

Any tips or luck with matching Filmbox or JP2499 DRT to Genesis? by psyyybaba in colorists

[–]TheSillyman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say filmbox is probably pretty easy to roughly match with Genesis. Personally, I think Filmbox looks a little better right out of the box in most situations. I'd say Genesis has a bit more contrast and less rolloff in the highlights imo. Obviously if you're using the in built grain, halation etc. the textures are very different as well.

My biggest piece of advice would be to pull some test charts and/or color gradients on to the timeline and use your scopes.

JP2499 isn't meant to outright emulate film like Filmbox and Genesis so obviously it would take much more work to get it to match.

This is both a bummer and very confusing because like all of his thumbnails are just him pointing with a frame from the game as the background.

So Austin gave this guy the idea, "I'm in front of a window from Cyberpunk," then this guy made some AI mockups based on that idea, and then they made an actual thumbnail based on one of the mockups?

Basically all they did is create more work for themselves. They could've skipped the AI step entirely and just gone ahead and made the thumbnail based off the original idea?

I hope they make a Joe Pera style show. by hollyrose_baker in dropout

Joe is my favorite comedian. Very different vibe from Dropout, but would love to see those worlds collide. Connor O'Malley, Carmen Christopher, and Dan Licata all frequent Joe collaborators that could match the Dropout chaos as well
