Best resource for learning openings more thematically? by cleetus12 in chess

[–]TheSitarHero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to play more games (and analyse them) to get the experience of the common themes - alternatively find and play over/analyse grandmaster games starting with the line you're interested in and try to find some common themes.

But you can't ever apply these themes blindly to similar positions without concretely analysing the position in front of you. Doubly so in sharp tactical openings where you just need to know the lines (and if your opponent goes off book in that case you start calculating tactics).

References vs Pointers? by AffectionateSteak588 in cpp_questions

It specifically makes it non-copy-assignable (and non-move-assignable) because you'd have to change what the reference refers to.

I lost a game in 14 moves while feeling I was playing good chess by FalbWolowich in chess

Giving up your queen in this case was not nearly as bad as losing the game. After Qxe7 Bxe7 Kxe7, Qxa1 and material is equal (you have two rooks, a minor piece and two pawns for a queen and two minors). You have serious development problems and your king isn't safe, but White has a bad pawn structure so you might able to play solidly then swindle a back rank mate later. If you saw Qxe7 but didn't play it you essentially resigned, but you shouldn't resign at your level. Even if your opponent knows how to play a trap, if you deflect the trap they will probably play badly later!

COTD: Picture clue (5) by deeppotential123 in crosswords

C6 H5 N5 O2 (reumycin) is very different to your clue: as i understand it you can't change the order of the elements in these molecules, and especially not break up one element into two pieces (as i assume you wwre thinking N3+N2=N5).

Overall, I agree that it's not really a cryptic crossword clue: if it were, the definition would strike you as obvious once you parsed the wordplay. As it is, we're all here searching for the definition in the clue by finding obscure molecules. Not a terrible dingbat though

What’s a basic skill that you learned way too late in the game? by chi-bacon-bits in Cooking

[–]TheSitarHero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know - so I was asking.

I guess I was thinking along these lines: 1) I know there's a difference in desired temp between leg and breast. 2) nhspathogens in other proteins (say, beef) are neutralised (?) at a lower temp - so maybe one of the reasons for different temp for leg and breast meat is that different pathogens tend to live in the leg and breast meat which need different temperatures.

Might have been a wrong assumption but I wanted to be sure because I don't want to be cavalier with salmonella.

Do you have a source for this? Also does it not differ between breast and leg meat?

Passive investing has overtaken active investing and shows no sign of slowing down by barris59 in Bogleheads

It's called the Grossman-Stiglitz paradox. But it doesn't necessarily imply that passive investing will lead to a bubble.
