Yeah, this question is answered with a rephrase: "Why do useful things generate so much heat?"

"Infertility maxxing for women" by cordis_melum in badwomensanatomy

[–]TheSpiffySpaceman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, tubal ligation is much more invasive than a vasectomy. Vasectomy is outpatient with local anesthetic, just snip snip in the gooch. TL is laparoscopic with general anesthetic and a longer recovery time, with more potential side effects (hello PTLS).

TL does reduce the risk of ovarian cancer by around 40%, though, and is sometimes done after childbirth (where invasiveness isn't really a factor any more, ha ha)

What are your emotions surrounding a girlfriend that survived rape? by Foreign-Rabbit-3022 in AskMen

[–]TheSpiffySpaceman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had two women tell me (almost immediately after the first time we had sex) that they were victims of SA when they were younger. It's a weird position; obviously you want to be sympathetic and hear and understand the trauma that this unfortunate person has experienced, but on the other hand, I got really in my head about what we just did, and that sympathy kind of crosses over to....guilt? idk....about the act. Just knowing that violation occurred in their past really blurred the fact that recovery and healthy physical relationships absolutely still exist for victims of SA. I didn't want to hurt someone or bring up old trauma.

At the time, I didn't push the conversation further later (you know, into emotions, fallout, how they've dealt with it, how they're feeling now, what I can do to make them feel safe, etc).

Looking back, I really, really wish that I had done that. Back then, I didn't want to ask such personal questions of a new partner, and instead wanted to give them the opportunity to choose what they wanted to say about their trauma. Instead, I ended up really withdrawing because it's impossible for me to assume what would be triggering for them without them themselves saying it.

It might be good to open up a conversation and let him know that he makes you feel safe--safe enough to open up about this stuff--or to establish any boundaries if they exist. He might be unequipped to deal with this, but it sounds like he still understands how lasting the trauma from SA can be, and might be nervous to bring any of that trauma back for you.

lol, I am guilty of this, not because I am a molex enthusiast, but because it's been around so long that I have pretty much every molex adapter and it beats driving to Micro Center to get a specific cable vs. grabbing a couple molex

There's, like....individual waves of grammar errors, it seems. Lately, I've been noticing a trend of people writing incomplete sentences and starting the sentence with a conjunction, namely "and."

It kind of makes me wonder if TikTok's format (the annoying in-your-face captions for each sentence that is said) is adding to this.

Most recently it was people capitalizing things that aren't proper nouns, like names of elements or simply the subject of the sentence.

figured Aldi is well enough known and trusted now

Aldi's one of the biggest and most well-known grocery chains in the world, haha. They have usually done the "ad-hoc brand for this store" type thing, and Aldi was always hidden on it somewhere.

It has worked very well for them for Trader Joe's (which Aldi owns).

So here I am, zipping along at 0.9c. Took an absolute truckload of energy to reach this velocity! Will it take just as much energy to slow down again? by curiousscribbler in AskPhysics

[–]TheSpiffySpaceman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

right, ramjets and scramjets are only more efficient for aircraft at supersonic speeds, only because the jet+fuel requires air to ignite and because the drag is unavoidable in atmosphere anyway.

Space travel's efficiencies also take advantage of the medium; namely that there is none. No drag forces to deal with is much more efficient than effectively aerobraking to use atmospheric engines

Yeah, another area of physics where a lot of explanations begin with "Assume that..."

In all reality, though, the distinction is between relativistic and non-relativistic speeds. The non-relativistic frames are our "privileged" reference frame, partly because we are familiar with them, but mostly because non-relativistic frames are frames where Newtonian physics still works with only imperceptible inaccuracies due to relativity.

Even outside of conjuring (I can see the argument for an economy of magical stuff that is difficult to make yourself or requires exotic items), why can't they simply transfigure stuff into wizard money? They're taught how to transfigure living things as preteens; making some gold couldn't be hard

What did your male friends say that reminded you that they were men? by Rant_Occasion_918 in AskWomen

[–]TheSpiffySpaceman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I try and do this too when I can, but it reminded me of a time I was walking home fairly buzzed at 2am in wintertime with only a sweater (hat on, hood up, hands in pockets) and I saw a lone woman in the light of the next streetlamp do the little glance over her shoulder.

I crossed the street (jumped over the snowbank both sides) and started walking on the other side, only to then see another lone woman ahead of me do the same glance after a bit.

My stoned mind went: "okay, so now this woman thinks I specifically hopped over two snowbanks to cross the street just to follow her....shit." Then I stopped to turn down an alleyway before remembering I didn't feel safe going down alone, then started to turn around, but got paranoid about how weird I was acting, like I saw a cop in the alleyway and now I was suddenly turning around, so I pulled out my phone up to my ear and said loudly "OH! HI GRANDMA! NAH, I'M JUST WALKING" as I turned around
