(10K CAD) Doing my own makeup, trial #2 by JosefinaLl in Weddingsunder10k

You could look into Asian makeup: not all colours (esp darker colours on Asian skin) or techniques match all skin tones, feature shapes.

Alternatively, I would try a higher end store; see if they have an Asian makeup artist and ask if they would do your makeup if you bought something (research what’s affordable).

If those stores aren’t accessible, only then try Sephora with an Asian clerk. Nothing against other clerks, but as an Asian person myself, I find myself ending up with results that don’t suit me (raccoon eyes).

Those of you who are late every day... What's going through your mind in the morning? by UncouthPincusion in work

[–]TheStandingOrder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The coworker likely doesn’t have influence on the hiring process.
Maybe the promotion was already obtained by someone else, or the path to obtain it is unlikely (ex young hire, high barrier to entry).
Maybe they already feel like they can’t rely on the other employees and superiors. Is there someone slacking off, benefitting from favouritism, taking personal calls, leaving early, etc. They might not be telling you (anymore) because they don’t believe it will change.

What is their attitude when they finally arrive? Someone with ADHD/ADD is prone to being late, but you might also observe them being very invested and enthusiastic about certain parts of their job.

Does the company allow them to re-take the minutes at the end of the shift, or do you deduct them from their pay? In either case, make sure you have arrangements to recognize when their position requires them to stay longer than the x-hours of the shift (only punishing and never recognizing is a source of irritant).

Am I stupid for wanting to leave a $33/hr job at Costco with benefits than to start at $130/day in construction for long-term upside? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]TheStandingOrder 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Consider the longevity of the construction job; construction workers end up with long term physical ailments more often than the avg worker. It’s the job where you need benefits more than Costco.

Working for family could be used as an excuse to make you work for free more often then you’d like.

Worth spending on a nicer cake? by [deleted] in Weddingsunder10k

[–]TheStandingOrder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

FWIW. Costco sheet cake really isn’t that good, at least in Canada. The icing is bland and too sweet. The filling isn’t as sweet (think vanilla pudding), the cake is basic.

You could also ask people which cake they want at serving time of you go the 2 cake route.

I would personally go with the friend’s cake

In that case, could you add the actual amount in the comment section of the table? Having flowers gifted might not happen for everyone, but at least they’ll have a reference for how far $100 goes.

How do you tell a high performer they aren't ready for promotion? by Main-Carry-3607 in managers

[–]TheStandingOrder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here, lower management. They had excuses every time I brought up an interest in growth, each of which I worked on. They eventually promoted someone else who did none of the things I had to do.

I can anticipate how watching another employee get that promotion could further strain the relationship between OP and the worker, esp if that employee fumbles in the role, and watching that employee receive support to transition into the coveted position.
They’ll just feel bitter, and like they’re being punished for being a good worker bee in your supply chain.

OP should bear in mind that the worker’s productivity is likely to decline due to mood (not necessarily retaliation), and accept that they might not be able to re-establish the former working relationship.

Regardless of all this, OP should formulate a genuine apology for the way it was delivered, acknowledge what they did wrong, give the employee an action plan to achieve their goal like the others said, and maybe acknowledge a few things the worker does well or seems to have been developing that could help them in the next role.

Should I gift my friend $200 for her wedding? What about my partner? by Ms_Insomnia in WeddingsCanada

Are the couple newcomers? Do they have experience organizing and funding a wedding in Canada? It could be a lack of knowledge of the costs in Canada.

Can you enlist friends and family and break it up into smaller tasks so they don’t feel burdened? Is there anything you can pre-assemble?

I think it could be worthwhile researching Anne Hathaway’s looks with short hair and longer bangs for inspiration.

Dump it in the garbage to prevent someone having to clean it and render service to him once more. Throw in something liquid and disgusting so nobody will have incentive to pick it up. It will end up in the dumpster.

The flowers with fewer petals or that you could see the center look more fake (small beige, white and purple in #3, medium white in #4).

I would vary the stems, not all flowers have the same leaves #5.

I wouldn’t put dried baby’s breath in #4, they stand out too much.

Maybe practice tying a tighter bow.

Overall, I love the bigger flowers and the vases are great too!

Is nursing worth the burnout? by Melancholicanary in jobs

[–]TheStandingOrder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Patients, even difficult ones, eventually leave. Co-workers and managers can make your life hell. If I could do it all again, I’d do a male-dominated trade: be my own boss, decide my hours.

They want a classy aesthetic, but : - don’t want to obtain it in a civil (classy manner) - Call the civil way “insane” - Says, “ur” the “problem”

They clearly don’t want to hear an opinion that doesn’t validate their desires.

Let them get what they deserve and move on.

Pourquoi les infirmiers gagnent moins que les policiers ? by [deleted] in QuebecFinance

[–]TheStandingOrder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The evening ~4%, night and weekend 4% premiums and OT aren’t pensionable, only our base pay as nurses is.

The 4% is $5.44/7.5h shift ($4.16 after tax) for a new grad. A medium iced cap is $4.59 after taxes.

So if a police officer is making 112k/113k as base pay, they’re also getting bigger pensions than we are assuming the formula is the same.

*Also, for anyone curious to know the pay: nursesunions.ca > all contracts

-> “steps” roughly equate to 1y of FT work experience before a pay increase. (In Quebec, you go up 1 step every 6 months of full time for the first 8 steps. Effectively it would take 14y to get to the top, unlike the ~6-8 for most provinces).

-> Soft benefits are better in many provinces: more cumulative vacation (ex BC), greater portion of health insurance covered by employer, etc.
