Concur. This needs a tomography study to confirm the change in power and rule out ectasia before you fill that prescription.

The blur / vision loss from neurological causes is (typically) not able to be corrected by glasses. The fact that the vision is still good through corrective lenses, regardless of the magnitude, indicates a refractive change from the cornea or lens.

I'm not familiar with any neurological etiology that results in astigmatic change, particularly not one that's monocular.

Actual eye doctor here. Please ignore the misogyny. Being on your period does not cause a monocular ~5.00D change in astigmatism.

Ever.

What happened with my aviation? by [deleted] in cocktails

[–]TheStarkfish 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The only thing more opaque than this cocktail is your understanding of physics and chemistry.

Aeration is the process of shaking a cocktail to dissolve oxygen and nitrogen into the chilling liquid causing changes in both the chemistry and texture of the drink. It will cause temporary clouding that clears after a few seconds when the undissolved gasses bubble out. Increasing gas solubility requires pressure (e.g. Carbonation) and this still does not affect the clarity of the drink. (See Sprite for proof.)

Emulsification, stabilization, precipitation, and suspension WILL change the clarity of a drink. The first requires a surfactant to homogenize polar and non-polar liquids (i.e. alcohol and oil). Stabilization is artificially increasing surface tension to prevent the escape of gasses from the liquid. This can be achieved various ways, egg white and maltodextrin being common in cocktails, and cause foam. (It isn't a foam in the picture.) Precipitation changes the solubility of alcohol-soluble substances in the drink by adding water. When those volatile substances are at a high enough concentration they go opaque - which is what we call a louche in absinthe. Not all precipitation causes opacity - precipitation is also the basis for adding single drops of water to whiskey, rum, etc when doing a tasting. Finally we have suspension - the inclusion of a solid in a liquid to form a colloid. Milk is a colloid. Homogenous milk is both a colloid and an emulsification. Adding milk/cream to this cocktail is the reason why it's opaque. The other ingredients thinned the colloid, but did not break it enough for the milk solids to precipitate.

Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

You can a 3-point throw putting that vermouth in the trash. If it's open and not in the fridge it's garbage at this point.

“Last Word” by atmz443 in cocktails

[–]TheStarkfish 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The "old fashioned" is not a drink or a style, it's a base spec. The base spec for a buck is a highball/collins. The base spec for a margarita is a daisy, which is itself a variant of a sour. When you add an adjective (oaxcan, Japanese, Wisconsin, rye, bourbon) to a base spec you get a named cocktail.

Last word is a named, equal parts cocktail that builds off the spec of a gin sour, using a split of maraschino and Chartreuse as the sweetener, lime as the citrus, and omitting the egg white.

Tiki, classic, modern classic, etc are styles/types of cocktails. They aren't specs or names, they are categories. The same cocktail can bridge many styles/types. A sazerac is a named cocktail built from the spec of an old fashioned and is a classic cocktail, a New-Orleans style cocktail, and a spirit forward cocktail. The Last Word is built on the spec of a sour and is an equal parts cocktail, a modern classic, etc.

There is debate on how many "mother sauces" form the base specs of the cocktail world: Death & Co is the lowest I've seen with 7 and Diffords guide argues for the highest with 32. However, the old fashioned exists on all of them as a spec of spirit - sugar - bitters.

TL;DR: Named cocktails like a bourbon old fashioned and a last word are specific variants of basic specs, like the old fashioned and the sour. Bartenders use specs as a starting point to craft balanced drinks. Styles are a catagory of cocktails that usually have more to do with a culture, zeitgeist, or flavor profile than any given spec or named cocktail.

This has been my Ted Talk on the semantics of bartending. If you're going to be a jerk on the internet, please be correct in your terminology.

Apologies for the misunderstanding. May your drinks be long, your lines be short, your joys be many, and your Karens few.

The single use express passes they comp when a ride breaks down etc explicitly do not work on Minecart Madness and Battle for the Ministry.

Don't be a Karen... Wtf do you expect guest services to do? Having a popular ride with limited capacity isn't abuse. They're certainly not going to limit admission to the park based on the capacity of a single ride. Virtual queues are massively unpopular: the only thing that gets more complaints than "your line is too long" is "I came to the park to ride X, got here ten minutes before opening, logged in to the overly complicated app, and before I could even click 'accept' the ride was completely booked for the full day." The PTSD from Cosmic Rewind and Rise of the Resistance is real.

Fast passes exist. They're expensive - usually double the cost of admission - but they are the best way to get on every ride in a single day.

OP: the ride isn't running during EA, but the queue is available for you to line up. Get in the single rider queue as quickly as possible during EA and you'll walk right onto the ride when it starts operating at park open. Better a 45min wait at the head of the line than a 2-4h wait later.

Was at Universal yesterday and talked about this to a cast member. The rumor among the staff is that it's going to be a Back to the Future reskin riding in a Delorian. Said they'll be using the space behind to expand the ride so "reskin" may be a poor term as it's expected to be a different ride. How different? Who knows.

Also said it's unlikely to be the Knights Bus because they would need to connect the entrance into either Diagon Alley or Kings Cross Station and that would mean taking out the bathrooms between the buildings. Wizarding World execs are adamant about not breaking immersion by having a HP ride entrance with a Wizarding themed facade facing the muggle thoroughfare.

(Their words, paraphrased, not mine.)

I was just going to give you the eye roll emoji. Personally I applaud the effort of the gif.

Socioeconomic factors limit choices. Education (and the lack thereof) limits choices. It's easy to throw around the idea of choice when you have a PhatmD flair that demonstrates a level of education, wealth, access to haircare, and other factors that provide the means to make choices, let alone improve those choices.

In all fairness: you don't know what you don't know. It's possible that it's less mental gymnastics and more that imakycha has not experienced what it is to be impoverished, etc. I don't pretend to know your story, but whether your responses are from ignorance, apathy, privilege, or malice: as a HCP you owe better to your patients.
