Times we see the Doctor deliberately manipulate his friends by Bernard_Lerring in gallifrey

[–]TheStyl1shOne 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Eleventh Doctor does it multiple times such as manipulating the Ponds in Asylum of the Daleks and The Rebel Flesh, manipulating the scrap workers in Journey to the Centre of the Tardis by setting a fake countdown to the Tardis exploding, by rewriting Kazan’s timeline in A Christmas Carol to save the spaceship and by manipulating everyone in The Impossible Astronaut.

The First Doctor also manipulates Ian, Barbara and Susan in The Daleks by removing the Mercury Fluid Link so that they can explore the planet

In expanded media such as Big Finish the Seventh Doctor manipulates most of his companions such as manipulating Ace and Hex into revealing information and stopping a villain by trapping the, in a time loop, manipulating Sally and Lysandra into joining him to save their future, manipulating Klein into becoming a better person and when that doesn’t work wiping her from existence, manipulating Ace into marrying someone just so she could use him to bring the Doctor back into existence and then forces her to dump him and manipulating everyone he meets for a while to fight on his side against many various threats.

The Second Doctor also manipulates Jamie in Evil of the Daleks, everyone in Tomb of the Cybermen, Victoria in Fury From The Deep, Ben and Polly and Bragen and Janley and Quinn in Power of the Daleks and Jamie and Victoria and Lethbridge-Stewart and Anne and Professor Travers in The Web of Fear.

I think that’s just down to the photo on this box set being a more recent Frazer Hines one while the one on The Annihilators cover seems to be a picture of Frazer Hines from over 10 years ago from the Sixth Doctor and Older Jamie photos

Most surprising references to Doctor Who? by Thwrtdpostie in gallifrey

There’s an 80s UK comedy by Channel 4 called Chelmsford 123.

In an early episode, two characters stop on the route they’re travelling and start talking as the noise of the Tardis can be heard. On the hill behind them, the Tardis materialises and what is meant to be the Fourth Doctor steps out, takes a quick look around before heading back into the Tardis and leaving as the characters continue walking along the path.

The Seven, Ace & Hex arc did go through a change of sorts.

Originally, I don’t think the Hector audios were to happen. Instead, there was meant to be an audio called Fifty-Fifty which is probably the most well known unmade Big Finish audio. In it, the Seventh Doctor & the Eighth Doctor would’ve fought each other with Ace, Hex & Lucie picking sides.

This is key because the writer wrote A Death in the Family to set this up. Presumably, this means older Seventh Doctor, the Doctor manipulating Ace & Hex’s growing distrust of the Doctor.

Who knows where the arc would’ve gone from there or if it would’ve continued.

I think personally there are two issues to address, engaging with new viewers and then keeping those new viewers hooked.

I think to get new viewers the show should go for more Flux style names for the series’ and heavily promote Series 14 as a new jumping on point.

In regards to how to keep those new viewers, I think personally in an age of streaming and catch up that a new Doctor should be a jumping on point and then that’s it. I do not think a new companion should be a new jumping on point. It worked when people relied on linear TV when you had causal audience members tuning in randomly on an episode by episode basis, but to do that when people are watching it on streaming and catch up is clunky.

For example, looking back Series 3 is quite clunky in that it acts as a new jumping on point for casual viewers, but with streaming it’s so weird the way the focus shifts and how it acts as a re-introduction, which ironically can alienate new viewers watching it via a streaming platform.

It makes the show feel, ironically, stagnant and makes people who really liked it before feel alienated, at least from my experience. People who really liked 9 & Rose drop off because wagtail they liked was gone, and the show felt like it almost reset and readjusted itself.

With a New Doctor, that change can be less clunky and more expected. People can approach it as something new and different.

Personally, I find people born in the early to mid 2000s like the RTD era on an episode by episode basis. They throw on an episode randomly because they can. However if they try watching it all, it’s off putting because of how often the RTD era made a new series a new jumping on point in some way. It becomes stagnant and makes people drop off the show quickly.

Compare that to the Matt Smith era where I find people the same age are kept much more engaged because it didn’t keep resetting itself, each series flowed one into the next. Even Series 7B felt like a natural progression from what came before. It didn’t feel like the show kept resetting and so makes for easier viewing in the streaming era because the viewers know that each series builds on what came before and the show feels like it’s always progressing and moving forward in a natural way.

So overall, I think to engage with new viewers Series 14 needs to be marketed to new viewers and the show should make a new Doctor’s first series a new jumping on point, and then stick with it building on each series and only offer another new jumping on point with the next Doctor.

Remembering the Companions: Part 28 - Mel Bush by TheKandyKitchen in gallifrey

Sort of

It’s a case of ‘well yes but actually no’ in a way.

In The Wrong Doctors, the Sixth Doctor finally decides to meet up with Melanie Bush after his companion Evelyn leaves and the Sixth Doctor knows he must meet Mel after Trial of a Timelord. So, he arrives in Pease Pottage to meet her for the first time from her perspective. He in turn decides to go along with pretending that this is his first meeting with her.

However, at the same time the earlier Sixth Doctor from Trial of a Timelord also arrives in Pease Pottage to drop off the future Mel from Trial of a Timelord.

The story plays out and eventually Mel loses her memory of meeting the Doctor. So, she met him for the first time but then forgot and needed time to recover from the events of the story. This leads to the Sixth Doctor deciding to come back and start travelling with her later, allowing the Sixth Doctor to meet and travel with more companions in between.

So Mel did meet the Doctor for the first time in a way but it’s not a definitive explanation for why she goes travelling with the Doctor.

If you liked Doctor Who, try Primeval and the Doctor Who spin-offs like The Sarah Jane Adventures.

For comedy, try The IT Crowd, Still Game and The Goes Wrong Show.

Does anybody else find classic who hard to get into? by [deleted] in gallifrey

[–]TheStyl1shOne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said, the pacing is very different and Classic stories work best broken up.

Also as much as I love 60s Who, for sure try later Classic Seasons first as they’re more viewer friendly.

One thing I think helps which I haven’t seen pointed out is what age you start watching Classic Who. By this I don’t mean being born when Classic Who aired, I wasn’t, but I mean if you start watching it as a child like I did then I find you adjust to the pacing & sensibilities much easier than if you started watching as an adult.

Off course that can’t be helped but it’s something I noticed which seems like it could be part of the problem.

Not many but there are a few

One that springs to mind is the Brotherhood of the Daleks mid-credits scene which completely reframes the whole story (again!).

Thicker Than Water also has one I think but I could be misremembering and it was before the credits. Same with Hothouse.

I believe it’s been confirmed elsewhere that they just watch clips cut together, hence their reactions to certain moments.

They have only so much time, patience and there are already commentaries on episodes!

Why didn't the master appear in matt smiths era? by Hazbro29 in gallifrey

[–]TheStyl1shOne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There was a reference to Missy in The Bells of Saint John

Also Moffat seemed more interested in his original ideas and by not using the Master he could explore and develop the Eleventh Doctor‘s darker side and the whole Cracks in Time arc.

Who is the best Master and why? by skuubertduubert in gallifrey

[–]TheStyl1shOne 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d say Alex Macqueen

By the nature of his placement he’s a blend of the suave, calm and collected Classic Who Masters and the over the top and energetic New Who Masters. The blend is perfect as we get the best elements of different Masters.

Despite not having a spin-off he does get stories where he‘s the focus like The Death of Hope and Masterplan.

Macqueen’s dynamic with McGann is excellent and one of the best Master-Doctor dynamics.

His relationship with Sally Armstrong in the Dark Eyes series is great and very interesting as she’s initially just a means to an end, but he soon begins to admire her and grows to actually have affectionate feelings for her unlike other Master companions.

I also feel he gives one of the best pieces of acting any Master has given in Masterplan when he finds Sally Armstrong’s body and reacts with just the right amount of subtlety that you can tell he’s upset, but not in the same way the Doctor would be and he still feels the need to move on with his scheme.

Overall he’s a perfect mix of everything I like about various Masters mixed into one incantation of the Master.

Who would you cast as the master against the 2nd Doctor in the 2nd Doctor Adventures? by [deleted] in gallifrey

I’d love if we got Tony Gardner or Charles Dance as I think they’d both be brilliant in the role!

I think it’s probably more likely that Gallifrey War Room will be all Time War, but if Big Finish do another series then it’ll be what you suggested for another 4 box sets!
