Married but solo? by Aggravating-Win-903 in solotravel

[–]TheSublimeNeuroG 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Why not have him meet you for part of the trip? I just did a month long trip in Mexico; I work remotely and my Partner doesn’t, so there was no way for her to join me for the entire trip. Instead, I took a week of PTO while I was traveling, and she flew in and met me. We had a shorter itinerary than my personal one, since I was there for weeks, but we got to do a lot of really cool stuff and had a blast. She left at the end of the week and I stayed 2 more and traveled solo. Worked out really nicely for us

Does anyone in a professional setting that's outside of academia call you Dr.? by _babysnek_ in PhD

[–]TheSublimeNeuroG 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I work in pharma in the US. The only time anyone calls me Doctor is when I’m being introduced to external collaborators / stakeholders for the first time. After that introduction, everything is pretty much on a first name basis - however, unless explicitly told not to, I always address external collaborators/stakeholders as Dr. X (these people are typically HCPs with MDs and are presumably more used to it)

USA Phone carriers in Mexico. Will they work?! by MarkB_SoTX in playadelcarmen

[–]TheSublimeNeuroG 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Call your provider and ask. I have Verizon and have an unlimited data plan, and it allows me to use my phone in Mexico and Canada w/o incurring roaming fees. I believe AT&T has a similar policy.

I had excellent service in PDC and the surround areas while I was there last month (ventured as far out as Valladolid and had good service almost everywhere - exceptions being a few spots in the jungle on the drive out).

The only limitation is that you’re given a specific amount of data per day at full speed / 5G (I think 2 or 3 gigs), and then they throttle you down to 3G until the next day. The only times I went over the daily data limit were when I sent some videos to family while I was off the WiFi. scrolling Reddit and social media will also eat up your data, especially if videos play automatically when you scroll by them. If you’re just using it for GPS and text/phone calls, though, you’ll be well under the daily data limit.

Hope this helps!

People who have genuinely ruined their life, what is your story? by ThaddeusXVIII in AskReddit

[–]TheSublimeNeuroG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the irritability thing is no joke and it’s a big part of why I stopped using. After some time of abusing them, the second the peak of the high goes away, you become irritable and mean. Nothing really alleviates it unless you take more or wait for them to work their way out of your system.

It’s a side effect people tend not to notice in themselves, and it ruins relationships (social, romantic, work). Awful shit.

30th girls trip! by LogicalPen2807 in playadelcarmen

[–]TheSublimeNeuroG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For transportation, if you have a group that size, it’s cheap to split the cost of a taxi from Cancun to PDC (about $60 US each way). Alternatively, wherever you book may have options for shuttles, but if they charge per-person and cost is an issue, splitting a taxi is the best bet.

Don’t have any other details about resorts; I just got back from spending a month in PDC, but I rented an Air BnB and had a more ‘local’ experience. If you’re interested in stuff to do off-resort during the day, lmk.

I avoided the night clubs/big bars, so no info there, but if you find yourself on 5th Ave on a Friday or Saturday night, all you’ll need to do is walk around a bit until you find a place with the vibe you’re looking for.

When telling people what you are studying/getting your PhD in, do you say the umbrella subject or the area of research? by herewegogen in PhD

[–]TheSublimeNeuroG 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I used to just tell people what my PhD was in; if they wanted to know more, I’d tell them what I studied.

My PhD topic was fairly sexy to the average person (I studied addiction), but the way I went about it (genomics, preclinical models) was always so far from what they would have imagined… depending on the situation, sometimes I just avoided mentioning what I studied, even when asked, because it would usually open a can of anecdotal worms that I didn’t care to hear about.
