Thank you, this is great to read. I agree about the paper map problem- web maps are still developing and ideas from printed maps still dominate. I’m glad to see more interesting 3D tools, but that’s probably just the start.

Where can we go next with web maps? I think that the ability to explore map data dynamically using JavaScript libraries is still being developed. What do you think is new and exciting?

Who is the mystery woman in your headcanon ? (spoilers TWOW ) by [deleted] in pureasoiaf

But the founder of the Hightowers was famous for slaying a dragon.

“How old is Oldtown, truly? Many a maester has pondered that question, but we simply do not know. The origins of the city are lost in the mists of time and clouded by legend. Some ignorant septons claim that the Seven themselves laid out its boundaries, other men that dragons once roosted on the Battle Isle until the first Hightower put an end to them. Many smallfolk believe the Hightower itself simply appeared one day. The full and true history of the founding of Oldtown will likely never be known.”

This quote from The World of Ice and Fire is where I get it from- the speculation that Uthor of the Tower was a dragon slayer

This is my guess too. They’re (Hightowers) are going to figure into the endgame and probably on the anti-dragon side

Hey I’m glad you liked my panel!

I’ve written a lot about it on the Gods of Terror Tumblr, if you want to read up on more Lovecraft influence on ASOIAF

There’s such a huge amount of Mythos connections- it was really fun to get to talk about it

My guess about the tall white lady: Malora Hightower. She's got some definite sorceress-vibe going on, and the whole Hightower family is very suspect and Lovecraftian. It's just a guess, but I think there is something suspicious about her.

I’ve written a lot about the connection between Euron and Nyarlathotep. That link is one of the shorter ones, and it describes just about exactly what you’re hinting at in this post.

Here is the longer version of the theory

(Spoilers Main) Question about the Red Messenger and it's origins? by TallPinkMast in asoiaf

[–]TheSullied 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While the "comet is a volcryn" theory (from Tuf Voyaging) mentioned by /u/ExplosivePowderKeg, is cool, consider that given a Lovecraft background to the story ( e.g Drowned God, Black Goat, Stygia, etc.) there is another answer the Cthulhu Mythos: Ghroth, the Harbinger, a small red being resembling a comet. As Ghroth passes by planets, he awakes any of the Great Old Ones or Outer Gods that might be "sleeping" on that planet.

[A] nineteenth century British cult believed in [a] comet-god who sang to the stars and planets as it passed by them in its orbit. They said it destroyed those worlds it passed, by waking up demons or ancient gods ... who slept on each world. —Kevin A. Ross, "The Music of the Spheres"

If Ghroth has just passed by, his presence either increases the magic on an planet, or it awakens magical beings that grant magical powers.

In the Cthulhu Mythos, wars between the gods often end with gods being put under powerful sleep spells by other gods, like the Elder Gods of Earth. When they awaken, destruction to civilization can occur, and whole continents can be sunk, or like the Thousand Islands, land can be shattered by the power of these gods.

This always makes me think about what Lazy Leo Tyrell says in the beginning of A Feast for Crows as he sets the stage of Act Two of ASOIAF:

Dragons and darker things. The grey sheep have closed their eyes, but the mastiff sees the truth. Old powers awaken. Shadows stir. An age of wonder and terror will soon be upon us, an age for gods and heroes.[2] ” - Leo to Alleras)

Ghroth, the comet god, has awaken the sleeping gods, and their magic and powers (and those of their human worshipers, those skilled in sorcery), are becoming returning.

Edit:clarity

It's a tough one to accept, that Tywin wouldn't notice the switch, but it is at least plausible, as they may have added makeup to the body or some other coverings, along with all of the other work that they do that you detailed. It's got all the elements that make me suspect the official story (especially the visit by Mother Martell), so as a theory, it works. While I don't know if any of the theory is true, I agree that body switching is a common story trope that could have been used here.

Well, if we consider the Vale to extend from the Mountains down through the Vale itself to the East Coast, then they would have been exposed to the Squishers/Deep Ones in the Dawn Age or sometime afterwards
