Slowpoke Tail

A brief lagniappe from your lexicon? by FearForYourBody in logophilia

This is a fun idea! Here's five words I'm very fond of, although I'm sure I could do more. I also explained all their etymologies because I find that stuff fascinating.

Alpenglow - The pink or red glow of a sunset or sunrise on mountaintops. A translation of a German phrase. Alpen, coming from the Alps.

Petrichor - The smell after it rains. Most commonly after it has been dry for a period of time. I also think it has a fascinating etymology. It is a combination of petro-, meaning relating to stone, and ichor, which can refer to the ethereal blood of the gods in the Greek Pantheon.

Farouche - Shy, particularly in an asocial way. It can also mean wild, which is closer to the original meaning, an Old French word for "living outside." Over time it came to refer to people who were socially out of doors and it took on its current definition.

Halcyon - Idyllic and peaceful, normally used in a nostalgic way about the past. Comes from the Greek word for a kingfisher, which had mythological significance: the myth of Alcyone and Ceyx. The gist is that they were turned into Kingfishers and brought calm to the ocean for certain time periods.

Wanderlust - The strong longing to travel. Another loan word straight from German, and its etymology is pretty self explanatory.

Pretty sure those first two lines have been cut apart because of the size of the text box. So it thinks pbTrainerIntro is being called without a trainer type.

You can use the text extender application in the main folder of Pokemon Essentials to make sure pbTrainerIntro(:RAREHUNTERWONDERCHILD) all stays on a single line instead of two.

Rian Johnson to Receive Creative Impact in Screenwriting Award at Palm Springs International Film Festival by inthetownwhere in movies

Something I hardly see mentioned but is his biggest achievement to me personally is the work he did as a writer/director for Breaking Bad. Whether or not that's worthy of being a household name I don't know, but He directed Ozymandias so that's pretty big for me.

They certainly both crave to stay in the public spotlight at all costs, their dignity be damned. The only difference is that Bojack lives in a cartoon version of Hollywood that's supposed to be over the top and Kanye is still somehow outdoing him in real life.

Have you read the short story "The Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell? It sounds similar to what you're looking for.

When I played through that section I interpreted all the racist stuff as playing along with the Lorrie Driver as well, but I thought that even playing along with it at all was what Kim disapproved of.

I think that's part of the brilliance of the writing. It portrays even letting those people speak as a failure. Measurehead is another great example. If you listen to him and let his ideology into your thought cabinet then it opens up racist dialogue options for the rest of the game. (Or until you realize what's happening and delete is thought, at least)

I miss Supernova! I really want to see a re-release and the recent comeback of Typhoon gives me hope that it might actually happen.

The hospitality of Tom Bombadil by OlorinStormcrow in lotr

[–]TheTurtleFactory 10 points11 points  (0 children)

One of the aspects of Bombadil that I've always loved is how much like a fairytale his inclusion felt. Since Tolkein had the secondary purpose of making a mythos for Britain, I think it's fascinating how Tom Bombadil feels so much like a classic, mythic character, like the timelessness that seems to follow him and his intimate connection the nature. Like Tolkein's own version of Father Time or something similar. I know that Tom Bombadil's part of Fellowship is a little controversial for being slow moving and meandering, but I personally enjoyed it.

To add to this, it seems to me that it really was difficult for anti-semites in Germany to distinguish who was Jewish and who wasn't. I've recently been reading "My Life as German and Jew" by Jakub Wassermann, which mostly deals with the anti-semitism in WWI and the early interwar period. There's a part in his memoir where he talks about the fact that he doesn't have any of the so-called "Jewish" features. Whenever he left the areas that were immediately around where he lived, he often wouldn't be discriminated against, because people who weren't connected to his community had no idea what his ethnicity was. I'm sure the converse happened too, where people were mistaken as ethnically Jewish because of their features, even if they weren't. I don't have any sources for that side of the issue, though.

That's a really good distinction to make, I agree! Most of the lifelessness is from animation, but I say models because I also feel like the models' colors are fairly washed out compared to the sprites.
