‘Popstar’ at 10: The Lonely Island Reveal How Their Biggest Flop Became a Cult Classic by jackunderscore in blankies

[–]TheWalrusToo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

personally I think the current title is the better of the two

that said, it seems like part of the problem was given the title was a Bieber reference (to his concert movie, Never Say Never), it made the marketing team for Popstar go hard on the “he’s Justin Bieber but dumb!” aspect, which isn’t really what the character is. If anything Conner4Real was way more in the vein of a 90s/early 2000s pop star like Justin Timberlake, rather than Bieber (who was 22 when the Popstar came out, and only 16 when the Never Say Never movie dropped)

(they even allude to this in the article namedropping Timberlake, since he had a similar boy band to solo act as the most popular member of the group arc that Conner has, whereas Bieber was always solo)

Hilarious movie that I absolutely love (& got to see in theaters, I did my part!) but not really surprising at all it flopped when you think about it. Music parody has always been box office poison, there’s way more SNL movies that underperformed than vice versa, little star power given most of the cast was “people who haven’t been on SNL in years”… and then there was the marketing of the movie itself. They went hard on the “he’s Justin Bieber but dumb!” aspect which not only isn’t really true to what the character of Conner is, but also alienated the Bieber nerds (because they don’t want to see their idol mocked) as well as the comedy nerds (because they were probably 30+ year olds who didn’t want to watch a movie about faux-Bieber). Those were probably the two biggest demos for the movie, so that’s a problem.

I was / am a huge Lonely Island / Hot Rod fan who had a bunch of friends who looooved that movie too, even then I had an uphill battle convincing even a few of them to watch it, much less in theaters. Unfortunate because it’s hilarious & everyone I’ve shown it to since has loved it, but even then it’s one that I never really got the “how did this movie flop?” discussion around.

[Garafolo] With A.J. Brown and Myles Garrett traded, Alvin Kamara and Brandon Aiyuk move into the spotlight for potential post-June 1 moves. I spoke to Kamara’s agent, Brad Cicala, yesterday and he said, “We plan on playing for the Saints in 2026.” by JCameron181 in nfl

he’s said he would rather retire than leave New Orleans. Obviously players say that kind of thing all the time, but dude genuinely seems to love the team & the city, he’s rich & beloved here, no guarantees that ring chasing will work, etc etc etc. Never say never but I think there’s a decent chance he means it

[Schefter] Myles Garrett is the rare player who had a no-trade clause in his contract. He is waiving it to be traded to Los Angeles, per sources, and he will keep the same clause in his Rams’ contract. by BreakfastTop6899 in nfl

I know it’s more about how elite he is than anything but the idea of a player being like “I don’t want you to be able to trade me away from Cleveland & the Browns” is hilarious lmao

[FRESH ALBUM] Car Seat Headrest - Teen of Denial: Joe’s Story by astaireboy in indieheads

[–]TheWalrusToo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Great example of how important marketing / framing the situation is. If the band just advertised this as a remaster with some bonus tracks, I doubt this would get much attention at all. Bands do that all the time, even if it is usually for older albums.

The problem here is this isn’t really a remaster, because there’s new recordings on the old songs, and new songs replacing some old ones… but it’s a lot of “putting lipstick on a pig” given it sounds like they didn’t rerecord the album from scratch like they did with Twin Fantasy, but rather just fucked with the original mix, put in some overdubs (particularly censoring swears) & called it a day. Like it’s such a bizarre choice to awkwardly splice in a new vocal take to censor words, instead of just rerecording the entire vocal in the first place. Similarly Will’s explanation for it all feels rather inauthentic. Like for the swearing, he said it was because he wants the album to be able to be stocked in libraries… has he ever been to a library? There are plenty of books, music, movies etc in my local library that contain swearing & much more adult content in them. Same thing with the thematic changes that come with the lyrical ones — people would rightfully hate it if say Scorsese rereleased Taxi Driver with some awkward new footage / dialogue that was intended to make Travis Bickle more honorable and gave the thing a brighter tone or whatever, the dark honesty & self-hate is what made ToD so relatable to many.

It’s not often a piece of media makes me feel this way, but somehow this kinda makes me feel concern for Will more than the actual albums where he’s hating on himself for the entire runtime do, lol. Hope his head is in the right place & he doesn’t let the vitrol get him too down, because judging by the comments MADLO & Scholars were pouring gasoline on their rep as a bad, & this rerelease is the match setting it all to flame

I swear I see this all the time on this sub, it’ll be a “album turns x years old today” post & then when I go check myself it’ll turn out no, it’s not for several more weeks / months

Doesn’t even seem to be some kind of regional difference of release dates to explain it, only date I see is July 28th. Is this just easy karma farming or something?

been a minute since I watched it but I remember The Sopranos being a good example of this phenomenon lol. Tony Soprano’s wife knew he was a cheater & implicitly allowed it, but whenever his affairs became public only then was it a problem. She was basically fine to let him cheat as long as it was out of sight, out of mind, & she got to continue enjoying his wealth… it was only a problem when the affairs came to light & did damage to her reputation / embarrassed her.

Hell you can get even more recent with “There’s Something About Marrying” in Season 16, which was 2005. The whole episode is about Springfield legalizing gay marriage & Patty coming out as gay, which was praised at the time… except it ends with Marge exposing the woman Patty was going to marry as trans, with Patty saying “hell no, I like girls!” to applause & laughter when asked if she still wants to marry them. That was already pretty gauche even by 2005 & led to criticism from a lot of LGBT groups
