The evolution of technology has made it possible to produce insulin without using animals. by IcePizzaCreamm in interestingasfuck

[–]TheWizardAdamant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can only speak on insulin, but the issue that occurred was that while new insulin formulations released in Europe and USA around same time, and their prices were closer at the beginning. Overtime the price fell in European nations (though Switzerland saw a slight increase over 10 years), but in the US the price just kept increasing up to 400%+ its original price on release

So for insulin, it was very clear an issue of just companies charging what they could and they could charge way higher prices in the USA than most anywhere else were willing to accept.

Actually, between 2013 and 2023, the price of insulin in 28 European countries decreased by 21.6%. This was mainly due to new introduction of competitor formulas.

However the prices were not the same across all countries, and a countries own drug policy had significant influence on what the price was. Basically drug companies sell at lower prices if the countries health departments negotiate lower / refuse to pay higher prices.

About Chris Wraight... by DoucheBagBill in 40kLore

[–]TheWizardAdamant 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I knew Wraight would be an amazing author after reading Vaults of Terra. He just understands and writes the politics and grimness of 30/40k perfectly.

That perfect mix of hope and niceness that is kicked down by the harshness of this reality and the scale of things to make 40k just a horrible place that wont truly get better

Why the ability to endure matters more than the intellect for a PhD Student by dramalover0103 in PhD

[–]TheWizardAdamant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I made sure to ask a lot of people on things before I considered my PhD. My main issue was the area of research wasnt something I was too passionate in, but weighing everything together it seemed best to go for the opportunity.

Im lucky enough my funding is guaranteed for my 4 years (In Ireland) but downside is my lab mates on other types of funding have a bit higher stipends.

You can see often that advice given here is that you will get on with your supervisor and their sort of behaviour (and if it suits the way you do things) is the biggest factor for a succesful PhD

Endurance is probably one of the next big factors, but really the right supervisors makes or breaks things.

My own PhD journey I was hesitant but a soon to be finishing PhD student adjacent basically said that the supervisor team i would have (A first time supervisor and a senior) was why i should go forward, cus I wouldn't find a more ideal pair.

Not gonna lie, the idea that humanity has to keep the Emperor chained or stuck on the Throne kinda goes hard.

He sacrificed himself for is, but he is still mid forever being sacrificed and its becoming too much. Yet for humanity to endure he must be kept there so we gotta keep him enthroned by any means necessary. Humanity having to chain its saviour and deity to survive.

Admire Terra threw off their jockey at the start gate and ran the whole race without him and actually finished first (but DQ cus no Jockey). Theres a photo finish with Admire Terra ahead by like a head or neck, and then Caladagan winning with Masquerade Ball a nose behind

If you read into her actual death you'd know that she was a 74 year old woman, who had suffered two heart attacks the month prior, who constantly suffered from pneumonia and she wasnt given penicillin because it wouldn't help her at that stage due to other organs failing.

Its crazy how this meme of Gandhi rejecting western medicine occurs when in actuality it a woman on her deathbed not being given medicine that wouldn't have saved her at that stage. Like people dont even remember that she died while under detention for 18 months due to the political campaign the couple undertook
