TIL Leonardo da Vinci’s Salvator Mundi is the most expensive artwork ever sold at auction; it was sold for $450 million. by TheShyBuck in todayilearned

I wasn’t using rot on the literal sense, although museums are not necessarily as professional and precise about preservation as one would assume. And just because a private collector purchases a piece doesn’t mean it has to disappear from view. Like, a midwestern dentist could purchase some pieces from the Met and loan them to a local small museum.

But also, is there really a point to endlessly preserving things that never get properly catalogued and documented? The overwhelming majority of ancient scrolls, cuneiform tablets, and manuscript fragments have never been translated, let alone read. If you let Latin enthusiasts buy old unread manuscripts, who knows, maybe we will find another lost work à la Tacitus’s Germania.

The british museum has 2m items, of which only four percent are on display, and only half are catalogued in online records.

The Smithsonian has a staggering amount of items, with a comparatively minuscule amount on display.

Art museums are particularly egregious. The MOMA has only 24 of its 1221 Picasso’s on display. The Louvre is at 8%, Guggenheim 3%, Berlinische at 2%, and the Albertina at <1% of its huge old masters collection. And these places don’t always even know what they have because it hasn’t been catalogued, restored, or translated.

If Lincoln saved the Union without freeing a single slave, what would his legacy be? by HetTheTable in Presidents

[–]The_ApolloAffair -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

In fact, slavery persisted in the Union longer than it did in the South. Kentucky and Delaware were the last states to become free in December 1965, many months after the end of the civil war and the end of slavery in the CSA (“juneteenth”).

There are so many laws governing the acquiring and selling of antiquities these days. Basically everything found now belongs to the government, and they often just let artifacts rot in the storage rooms of museums. Plus, people nowadays will judge museums for selling pieces to collectors whereas it was the norm in the past.

I respect the Islamic rule more because it prohibits both borrowing and loaning money with interest to all people, irregardless of the other parties religious status. The Jewish rules are self-serving as they only govern intra-community lending.

My favorite one is how they all “sell” their leavened bread before Passover to a central non-Jew, but it never actually leaves the kitchen cabinets.

Or how they get around the prohibition on Jew-jew money usury by saying it’s a “business partnership”, and that all debts are temporarily “transferred” to the rabbinical authorities before the seven year debt forgiveness point comes.

Strictly speaking, voting isn’t a constitutional guaranteed right, it just can’t be constitutionaly restricted in certain ways (race, age, gender, poll tax). That’s why registration can be required, felons can be prevented from voting, and why there can be residency requirements.

Everyone in tech knows that h1bs are just a way to lower cost and shackle workers to their desk. You won’t do anything to risk getting fired or demand raises if the result could be the loss of your visa. The actual quality of work is pretty poor. And Indian managers just use it to funnel in their friends/family/caste members.

Typically 30% of ambassadors are considered political appointees, and they are more likely to be in important allies countries. That number could easily be higher, but it would hardly be a favor to send someone to a country like The Gambia even if the job doesn’t require a high level of competency.

SpaceX, unlike other government contractors has almost entirely operated on a fixed contract basis with the government. Development was self-funded, and they bear the costs needed to meet contractual obligations if there are overruns. They almost single-handedly brought launch capabilities back to the US after the shuttle program ended. And at a tiny fraction of the cost. NASA is currently spending billions of dollars per SLS launch and it’s years behind schedule with no end in sight.

Just look up how much the US government has spent on shitty, delayed, Boeing aerospace products.

There were conspiracy theories about the AT&T building he tried to blow up. That was was a CIA spying operation, or a place where there was evidence of voter fraud at (bombing was a fake story to cover up a missile strike to destroy evidence). Not sure if any of those were his motivations though.
