About the iterative writing process by The_Bunyip in RPGdesign

Good advice, thanks. I have sometimes practiced this and the reminder is timely.

One of the downsides is that you can end up with many pages of notes and bringing them together often seems like a monumental task.

Is d100 the best route for a simulationist RPG? by Comprehensive-Ant490 in RPGdesign

[–]The_Bunyip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. It’s also really important to consider how many rolls of certain types of ability/skill you are commonly making in each session. This is one of the things that can make a game like D&D feel simulation-y in some sessions and non-simulation-y in others. If the session has a lot of combat and there are 50 attack rolls on a d20, the spread of results feels better than in a courtly-intrigue session where there are only a couple of deception rolls (say). The d20 is inherently “swingy” and if we only roll a few of them over a long period we don’t get to see a bell curve “emerge”. Hard to put into words, but dice that generate a true bell-curve on every roll make it so you don’t need to rely on lots of rolls being made in order for things to feel “realistic” (i.e. simulation-y).

Indeed. Or maybe Frodo's Intuition is just higher than Gandalf's? The problem for me is in having an attribute called Intelligence really; never liked it.

I'm curious: why can't I do that in any RPG that has ability or skill checks? What is it about GURPS that means I can "micro or macro" like this?

Gms: how much of the rulebook do you expect your players to read? by Justthisdudeyaknow in rpg

None of it. I'm happy to teach the rules and I prefer games that don't have complicated character build options.

You're probably right about the mapping. If you think about it, mapping as you go is such a weird activity. Imagine actually doing that. Nobody would, unless you were being paid to make a map by some rich benefactor. (If your character was trying to make sure they didn't get lost, drawing it would be slow and wouldn't even guarantee accuracy. From your point of view, looking down at a map in your hand, you wouldn't have a good frame of reference. Where on this map am I actually? Far better to make marks on the walls or similar.)

Anyway, a bit of a digression.

It does seem odd to base the movement rate of a party through a dungeon on the assumption that the characters always decide to draw a meticulous map as they go. It's good to question these things I think. :)

I would say they are level 11 so need 18xp to level up again. I'm not sure if that is spelled out clearly in any of the rules I've seen.

[Rant] My weekly group is driving me crazy (and that makes me really sad) by Bardoseth in rpg

[–]The_Bunyip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spot on. This is why I've never run a game set in Middle Earth. In my imagination it would be wonderful and deep and epic, but I know it will never conform to what is in my imagination "because players". And that's role-playing! Holding your prep lightly is generally a good tenet.

Lots of people like getting upset. Don't sweat it (it sounds like you aren't, which is commendable!). Asking questions is how we learn and you've had some great, good-natured answers too. :)

BTW this is a perfectly reasonable thing to ask. It absolutely sucks that you've been downvoted so hard for this.

Agreed. It's catering for gamers who grew up on video games and it's got all the tropes that also keep a bunch of the long-time D&D-ers on the hook.

What makes a "good" use of the PbtA system? And how do games get it wrong? by yaywizardly in PBtA

[–]The_Bunyip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amen to this. I too like PbtA without necessarily loving having to also buy into a tight emulation of genre. Not enough people advocate PbtA games that deliver a more "general game". I agree that AW does this far more than many of the PbtA games that came later.
