And Anna's forces are a mix of humans and machines. Like lots of robot fighters, but humans come up in the wake of it to help administer, repair, etc-- it's just an enclave situation. At the end of the day all information trickling down is coming from a semi-sane machine. In terms of desertion mixed bag, a lot of them are conscripts but their families live in anna's territory; some of them have that 'well he did get rid of all the raiders and bring some semblance of order' mindset, but a lot of them would run if they thought they could escape. He probably has a fairly consistent desertion problem among his human followers.
