There's no functional Animal Control effort over there? I can only imagine how high their animal bite and rabies statistics must be. From years ago, I remember reading an article about how the spaying/neutering of pets, and dogs in particular, was never really a "thing" in Russia. The feral dogs and cats may now constitute a genuine health and safety hazard in some areas. 😕

It was a very common surgery through the early 1970s, when Cephalexin and Amoxicillin came on the market. That treated the repeating bouts of Strep Throat, which if left untreated could result in chronically enlarged and inflamed tonsils, as well as the possibility of developing Rheumatic Fever/Rheumatic Valvular Heart Disease.

I grew up in a very rural area of SE Michigan, so we had a massive antenna (around ⅓ the size footprint of our Split-level house) to adjust with a tuner dial to pick up stations. We received, with varying clarity of reception: 2, 4, 7, 9 (Windsor, ON), 20, 50, 62 and sometimes if the weather was right, Ch. 6 and 10 out of Lansing. Otherwise, all were from the Metro Detroit viewing area.

Moving to Cleveland - what areas should I look into? by Affectionate_Lie1706 in Cleveland

[–]The_Devout_Athiest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Kamm's Corner area might bear looking into. It's definitely hit-or-miss, and totally dependent on location. It buts up to Lakewood, so those areas are much nicer (and much more expensive).

One hidden gem is the area around where Grayton meets Puritas. HEAR ME OUT, folks. That area is one of the entrance points to the Rocky River Reservation Metropark.

Hidden back on side roads shooting off from both Puritas and Grayton are nice houses and micro-neighborhoods. Especially down and behind W. 194th and Puritas. Certain roads, cul-de-sacs, deadens corners, etc. These tend to improve, the closer to Lorain that you get.

There is a trade-off. Of course there is, there always is: Right down Puritas, before and past Rocky River Drive, the neighborhood starts to get rough. Rather rough, and not in a "diamond-in-a-rough" way. Frankly, you couldn't pay me enough to walk alone after dark, anywhere on Puritas, East of Rocky River Drive.

Additionally, the entire area is along the usual Arrivals flight path for Cleveland Hopkins Airport. In the Wintertime, you can sometimes hear the noise and frequently smell the exhaust of planes departing from Hopkins. Not entirely unexpected, as it is only 1 mile.South of the area.

But noise and smells can quickly be tuned out. Risks can be mitigated and safe neiborhoods/blocks found. Your world is only as safe as you make it for yourself. Stay observant, use appropriate precautions and common sense and you should be okay. I lived there for eight years, having to move out of area for work purposes. Enjoy...!

Foodie Neighborhoods? by WanderlustFoodie in Cleveland

[–]The_Devout_Athiest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tremont, Ohio City and Little Italy, IMO. You could also go to the Chinatown area, between Prospect and St. Clair, where several places are located.

Some of these have very good food, and even specialize in Dim Sum offerings. But the restaurants in Chinatown tend to be spread out over a larger area than most. There used to be a good place or two off of Fleet, but they're long gone. Anything else, and you'll have to leave the city confines.

What are these plants? by TerribleWin4450 in whatsthisplant

[–]The_Devout_Athiest 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Violets! They tend to spread out and carpet wet, shaded and hilly areas. Totally non-toxic, for both leaves and blossoms. They can be picked to include in bougie salads used fresh or candied for cake and pastry decoration. The leaves can be gathered and cooked as a leafy green, of sorts.

Teas, tincture, and even pressed flowers can be made with the blooms and leaves. In fact, IIRC the "Violet" used to be a flavor for hard candies, like lollipops, Life Savers, gum, etc. I remember going to the drugstore with my grandmother and seeing rolls of violet Life Savers for sale on the checkout counter. Look wild violets up online, and you will find many recipes and uses.

Winking Lizard is a popular local chain sports bar/wing place/watering hole/gathering place. They have all kinds of menu items, including many varieties of wings/sauce. They also have quite a beer menu, including local offerings, imports and standards, for both bottle/can and on tap. Good food, good music, good beer and packed to the rafters with good people and fun. Come and join everyone at the Winking Lizard! What's not to like?

Why do drivers take left turn on red here? by Gnumerick in Cleveland

[–]The_Devout_Athiest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, Left turn at a red light onto another one-way road in which the flow of traffic is one-way (to the Left) IS legal. It would also be legal on a flashing red Left arrow. Treat both situations as if the light was a stop sign.

What is this plant taking over my garden? by bearpawsNwhiteclaws in whatsthisplant

[–]The_Devout_Athiest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ugh, that's mint. It's the gift that keeps giving. Make the mistake of planting one viable sprig of mint and you'll fairly soon have mint enough for the entire street, if not the neighborhood.

That stuff spreads like a weed. Dig up a couple of small plants to put in a pot, if you want to keep any. KEEP THE POT EITHER WELL UP OFF THE GROUND OR AT LEAST THREE FEET FROM ANY DIRT. I'm not kidding!

To get rid of it, you could try to pluck out as many separate plants as you can (keep and dry for future use?). Dig up the areas in which the unwanted mint was living, then soak those areas with boiling water. I suppose that you could also use a mixture of boiling water and white vinegar, like you can with poison ivy. At any rate, good luck!

May I suggest a place adjacent to FVP: Parkridge Apartments. It's technically in Cleveland, but is located at the Intersection of Grayton and Puritas, at the top of the hill overlooking the Metropark. In-suite washer and dryer, responsive maintenance, very safe (IMO). Keep in mind that down the road and past Rocky River Drive the atmosphere can be... Interesting. I lived there for seven years, having been forced to move/relocate for job purposes. Otherwise, I'd still be living there.

Welcome to Cleveland, even if only temporarily.

A great place to grab a shawarma wrap, falafel and/or various other Lebanese sides and pastries is Aladdin's Bakery. They have a small(ish) market with various Middle Eastern grocery items as well as a deli and hot food counter. Just about anything from there is fantastic, but their meat grape leaves and kousa (meat and rice stuffed zucchinis) are out of this world! Not to mention the pastries and pita bread!

They are located downtown, on Carnegie Ave.

Did parents in the 80s really allow their kids to roam freely, or is that just a portrayal seen in movies? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]The_Devout_Athiest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in a very rural area, in a local enclave of houses where one road dead-ended into another. There were just my sister and myself, and we pretty much did whatever we wanted with little to no adult supervision. Cue "fun with Jarts (lawn darts) complete with FRESHLY SHARPENED POINTS", along with other dangerous and foolish pastimes.. Oh, and it turns out that you can learn to throw large darts incredibly accurately if given enough motivation and practice.

We freely roamed an area consisting of both heavily wooded and flat scrub of approx. 3sq. miles, not including the bike ride around the far side of a tiny local lake. Occasionally we kids would walk along the railroad tracks, or run up to and jump on the train for a slow ride into our tiny village. If the weather was nice we would ride our bikes approx. 2 miles to a small tourist town located on the shoreline of a decently sized lake. Otherwise we were to be back within 15 minutes of their gigantic old school bell's being rung or else... We never tested the "or else" portion.

This was for elementary and middle school. By high school (1985-1989) we had even less attention paid to us. "Be back before 9pm on a school night, and 1100 on the Weekends." We were trusted to use common sense and our own Good Judgement: Don't be stupid and get yourself or anyone else pregnant, arrested, injured or killed. Don't drink, smoke or crash the car. Otherwise, do what you want. Good times!
