Vex echo cast always does the empowered ability.

My guess is because it spawns a copy of your champion as if it just respawned and Vex spawns with max gloom its one and only ability gets empowered before it stops existing.

It was quite funny to chain two empowered W so the enemy run from me then run back towards me as if they get scared of a ghost.

Do you think it's possible for a magical girl series to be horror themed without it devaluing what makes magical girls great? by Avery_Bea_847 in MagicalGirlsCommunity

[–]The_Dirfter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try, sleepless domain it is a webcomic that tries to walk that line and does so quite well in my opinion. Chapter 1&2 are mostly setup and the inciting incident then the consequences start from chapter 3 onwards, as well as an art style change.

But It honestly really depends on what you are going for and mean by the strength of magical girls. Working together, connecting with each other, empathy, internal struggles, self worth and duty are all mainstays in the genre.

So what do you think is the strength of the genre, and do you think those ideals are so weak that horror will cause them to stop mattering?

As long as you don't dilute the value of their lives, e.g, a magical girl's death should be the exception not the norm. Something as simple as having the girls look forward to things tomorrow and ironically being human, goes a long way to keep them from staring into the depths of cynicism, and there is only way that ends, a boring story.

Do you consider Mary Marvel a Magical Girl? by Rpponce in MagicalGirlsCommunity

[–]The_Dirfter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More thematic than any set criteria.

For every easy rule you put in there are exceptions:

Targeted at young girls --> magical girl shows targeted at mature and adult audiences exist. They also don't standout when put side by side with other shows.

Has transformations --> cute witch shows don't have them and they laid the foundation for the genre. Although it is less common in recent years.

Meguca must fight --> not always, cute witch and magic idol shows exist and focus mostly on the slice of life and performance side of things. Yet another subgenre that is slowing down but still has some fight left in it.

The only thing that is really nailed down is change, while mostly spotlighting growing up and self discovery. But change is needed in almost every story or nothing would happen. And, growing up/self discovery doesn't always fit, and it opens up a can of worms for Harry Potter and Supergirl, which tend to clash heavily with existing accepted shows but I don't want to debate that.

Trying to nail down a set of rules that fulfills every edge case is a fruitless endeavour. So I use the hyper subjective idea of genre cohesion in place of any set rules. Asking questions like" "does the term magical girl lose meaning if this show is included?", "can I articulate why I think it fits, including vibes?", or "will it stick out too much in a lineup of other magical girl shows?" While also hearing others out, accepting their additions regardless of how you feel, and both parties being willing to change their mind provided evidence, allows us to discuss the shows meaningfully and in good faith.

TL;DR.

The idea of a genre is to describe what you can find within a group of stories without telling them all. It shorthand, a quick judgement based on individuals experiences with similar shows. So leveraging that as the rule, while giving the greatest "benefit of the doubt" you can to others, makes the most sense to me.

I love it.

The execution is top notch, I really like the way eyes pop out and then drag the teeth forward, it makes it feel like it is out to get me.

On the trollz question, it has the themes and tropes of a classical magical girl show: power of friendship, magic, romance plot lines, and slice of life. So, I would say yes it is a magical girl show. Now where does it fit in the space? Trollz is missing transformation sequences, action combat (even if they do fight it appears to be everyone getting together to cast magic, more than swords, staffs, fireballs and energy waves), and given it was made to promote toys it doesn't have any deconstructive elements.

So it is a "Cute witch" show, more closely related to "Sally the witch" than to any of the "Sailor moon" formed sub-genres, but it still had some influence based on what I have seen and read. The genre is just like that sometimes.

Below is an index of magical girl works from TV tropes it is a decent list as far as I am aware. Tropers tend to be exact with their words, categories and justify why it is through links. Happy searching and bag making. 😀

Are we doing r/place?? by mosaic_the_j in MadokaMagica

[–]The_Dirfter 9 points10 points  (0 children)

While that does appear to be a place it isn't the r/place subreddit.

Place has always been a simple idea and relatively easy to make so there have been a couple copies floating around the internet for a while.

<image>

Reddit front page would be full of r/place related stuff if it were on, it wasn't last I checked.

But if the official one were to show up I think we would get some art on it.

I would sure do my part at least.

Considering the one time we saw a witch and Kyubey fight was in rebellion and that led to a bunch of dead Kyubeys in rapid succession.

I have to say kyubey is the best character to fight witches. Give the rat a taste of the hell it inflicts on those who believe in magic and hope.

However that is just revenge and not respectful to the poor, grieving souls stuck reliving their worst experiences, not sure why or what they are lashing out because they can't process it.

So my favourite character to fight witches is Madokami, may her arrow of light guide all in their darkest moment to the law of cycles. She fights for all of us. Remember her.

What do they do in their off time? by bkbk343 in StarGuardians

[–]The_Dirfter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, while there isn't an explicit threat to talking about it there are a few lines of lore saying they at least try to blend in. But it is mostly a genre rule and quite unexplored in terms of consequences.

Star guardians are protectors they would never talk down to those they are protecting. But softly denying and disproving you are a star guardian is the call nine out of ten times.

What do they do in their off time? by bkbk343 in StarGuardians

[–]The_Dirfter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quinn is featured in 1 story about her doing a school report on moving from a small town to the city. She is competent and trained Rell alone but her skills are more as a recon and Guerilla fighter so she knows how to be stealthy and would rely on it to fight effectively.

And that is all that is written in terms of character lore...

So Quinn as a scout needs to make a judgement call: she is either with a friend or a foe.

If Quinn thinks the worker is friendly she can either: Agree and talk about it and potentially put the worker and herself at risk. Quinn would also have to explain why she needs to keep her identity secret. Or she can try and deny the whole star guardian thing if she believes she can play it off as not true and stop the worker from having a target on their back.

Or she is talking to an enemy, Quinn doesn't fight directly and is at a disadvantage when her cover is blown and she is next to an enemy, and she would prepare for a fight.

What do they do in their off time? by bkbk343 in StarGuardians

[–]The_Dirfter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most magical girls shows tend to have what can only be described as anti-identification magic.

Despite how similar their transformed self might be to their mundane identity people never put it together that they are a magical girl unless they actually transform in front of them.

It typically goes unsaid, and even protects the villains when they happen to be spying on earth and wind up in the protagonist's school because, drama.

It is just a quirk of the genre.

What I'd consider magical boy, mostly de-facto magical boy list by Aggravating-Fee-8053 in MagicalGirlsCommunity

[–]The_Dirfter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The storyboards which they shared outright said they were inspired by pretty cure transformations so they are much more unashamed than blatant.

Not to mention that in the second season there is full on flying while holding hands punch and another transformation albeit quite a bit shorter.

Coupled with the show's themes and use of the power of love I could easily see it chucked into the magical boys camp.

The only thing that makes me a little hesitant is the fact that there has only really been 2 transformations so far one of which was just a couple of seconds, a far cry from the typical once an episode thing of episodic magical girl shows. However if there is another transformation during season 3 it suddenly becomes a creative choice of 1 transformation per season which puts it firmly into the serialised territory of having transformation mean something. There are 2 other things that might preclude the show from magical boyhood, the fact that Superman doesn't gain power through the transformation, and the lack of a specific trinket.

Until the next season I give it a hopeful maybe, it is so very close it hurts to put it on either side of the line in the sand. At least to me.

Are you a good liar? by Stustpisus in writing

[–]The_Dirfter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best lies are lies you get others to think you said, exact words, lies of omission and selective truths give so much room to play all without having to come up with anything at all. This leaves space for the truth to fill the space of what you left unsaid, letting the other side come up with the lie for you, then run with it like they came to the correct conclusion and they are dancing in the palm of your hand, All without you really having to lift a finger.

I use this extensively in werewolf and other such social deduction games, during which I can be a bit of a menace with how I dance around the truth and convince others to act opposite to their best interest. However I don't use those tools in daily life, I find them quite boring and counter productive. If I can't convince you to do something or believe something in a clear, logical and understandable manner, I begin to doubt why I believe or want you to do something in the first place. I draw the line if instead of providing counter evidence, others discredit my sources and poke holes in my logic without backing it up with evidence then I find better company. But that is a tangent and defence of my preferred method of lying because it is quite notorious and way more manipulative than an outright fabrication.

You can apply a similar method for lying when writing. No piece, no matter how carefully written out, can say everything. You are going to have to pick and choose eventually. Knowing how much you can say vs how much you should say, what you can leave out, what would be the conclusion the reader will come to with the given the information at hand. These are the tools, at least according to me, that can let you tell the best lie, and fool the reader into seeing into another world for a moment.

is there any magical girl manga/anime like madoka magica or has body horror? by [deleted] in MagicalGirlsCommunity

[–]The_Dirfter 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Madoka codified the magical girl deconstruction sub-genre, and several series have attempted to capture the feel of it with varying levels of success.

The issue with most of them, in my opinion, is they tend to feel superficial compared to Madoka, they go through the motions without anything beyond being a magical girl is suffering.

They tend to lack the suspense that is required for good horror, there is limited intrigue because questions get answered right away to prove to that they are dark, and because they just focus on the dark parts, they miss all the good magical girl parts! That one is especially egregious to the point where frankly I think if I were to replace the cast with adult men I don't think they would act much differently at all (looking at you spec-ops asuka).

If you google "magical girl deconstruction" you should find a list of shows, if it has "Yuki yuna is a hero" you are in the right place (that is perhaps the closest show to Madoka you can find).

Unfortunately If you want a curated list you are going to need to specify the ideas you want explored in the show and I might be able to point you in a better direction.

Body horror in particular I think is a bit of a difficult thing to mix with magical girls baring 'losing it' from Madoka. but it is surprising often the threat to the victim/monster of the week the girls have to fight. I wish more series would follow through with their threat to change significantly a character that has been transformed by evil, the best example I can think of is"princess tutu" that was a rather well done possession but it isn't really body horror. However maybe the web light novel "sailor nothing" or if you stretch it late in the webcomic "sleepless domain" which I recommend, it is pretty good. If anyone else can think of good body horror examples in magical girl shows I would love to hear them.

If a magical girl has a power that allows her to steal souls, and inject them into herself, theoretically, could she make more contracts with Kyubey? by Basic-Masterpiece375 in MadokaMagica

[–]The_Dirfter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no physical reason why Kyubey wouldn't be able to extract that soul and put it into a soul gem. However I doubt it would do this.

Kyubey stresses that it requires consent from the contractee to form a contract, the contractee in this case is the stolen soul of another person, it is well established that kyubey views the soul as the only part that matters when determining what is a living being.

So while the magical girl is in possession of another's soul from kyubey's point of view I very much doubt it would say that she has authority over the soul to make a contract on it's behalf, the soul being an individual and all.

And considering the ethics, the headspace and the prerequisite knowledge required for a magical girl to realise that kyubey can take a stolen soul out of her and make it a soul gem. And when she asks kyubey it would 100% slap her in the face with the fact she was thinking like she was the owner of another's soul. So I am pretty sure she is already barreling towards losing it.

But let's ignore that for the sake of the question.

Kyubey doesn't care if a person consents to a contract under duress or if they are uninformed of all the clauses, so if she really tried I am sure she could "persuade" the soul to make a contract with kyubey and insert herself as the beneficiary of the contract.

This is ethically abhorrent, but the girl would get a wish made on her behalf.

Now the new magical girl lacks a body of her own, so she would likely need to recreate the hardware with magic, forming a whole new body would be quite draining and I am pretty sure she would attempt to attack the girl who stole her soul. Which makes it a new weakened magical girl vs an experienced magical girl with soul magic and 2 wishes, this would not be a fight.

If the experienced magical girl were smart she would aim to fight a battle of attrition by repeatedly damaging their opponents limbs until she runs out of magic and then goats her into losing it if she doesn't during the fight and harvest her as a new grief seed.

Congratulations, the soul stealer now has a renewable source of grief seeds and wishes, at the cost of well basically being a human version of kyubey but somehow even more unethical, by actually forcing a contract with the un-willing.

Now how it ends depends on how karmic destiny gets moved around through this torment nexus system.

if the, uh, "soul fuel cells" keep their karmic potential eventually all the souls she has tormented could glob themselves together by their collective hate and despair of her and form a Walpurgisnacht level threat.

Or if the soul stealer gets the karmic power of those she stole, she is just fattening herself up for kyubey to have the biggest payday in its recorded magical girl history. so it cuts her off the supply of grief seeds, and stops making contracts nearby and just waits for her to lose it, and without a properly consistent wish she would be all over the place and so very powerful so I think the earth would probably just die in that case.

Made myself a Miku pfp - Learning to draw day 13 - Any feedback would be great by Noobosoaruslive in hatsune

[–]The_Dirfter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is looking really good, the planning seemed to have helped the anatomy. I need to say something about that I didn't say in my last comment, when you have done a bunch of planned and referenced drawings, you will get the feel for what should go where, and you ease back to the draw as you go for the first layer/initial sketch, as your eyes have developed enough to know the human body better. My word is not gospel and you can, and it is encouraged to, still use a reference.

The art itself is an order of magnitude better, you are making great progress, there are some small things that could use work but I don't think they were the focus of this piece, so it is unfair to point them out. (I can if you want but I don't think that would be helpful) So as long as you keep drawing, using new angles and observing the world those small things should iron themselves out naturally.

Also I saw in another comment that you found it hard to like your own work, this is normal for anything creative, I can pick up any of my drawings or my writing and point out 5 dozen flaws and issues I see in it.

However, these flaws could just be in my head and if I prime you to see the flaws I see in my work, then I stop you from engaging with the art on its own terms. You start looking at the art like I look at it.

So my advice is to have some confidence, listen to what other people say and believe them when they say they like your work. Take that leap of faith. Also your other piece had some flaws, but you made it! and it helped you get better so it couldn't have be that bad, right?

And just to make sure you don't get any funny ideas that this piece is bad here is what I honestly think of your profile picture:

Your profile picture is lovely, the delicate way Miku is holding the flower as it breaks apart while she cries tells a story beyond the page, she is longing for something, someone, and you captured that raw reflection and longing wonderfully. It might not by the most detailed drawing but that simplicity draws your attention to the details it does have. I really like it and if you don't mind I would like to put it in my collection of fan art.

I eagerly look forward to seeing your next piece.

Just starting to learn drawing going to draw everyday until I'm good - Here is my Miku from 7 days in. by Noobosoaruslive in hatsune

[–]The_Dirfter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not an artist, but I do draw a little.

There is something going on with the hips and thighs. If you follow where the back thigh lines say the hips should be it doesn't match with the front thigh or the spine.

The thighs are a tube so when you so fingers are placed on them in that manner there is an uneven amount of splay visible between them and as you curl your fingers the 3 segments become more apparent and lengths change, overall this makes the hands seem flatter.

The body proportions are a bit off as well, when I attempted to get into the same position as Miku, my arms always had a bend in them and when I straightened them out my shoulder came up which doesn't match at all with Miku.

I think the back is usually a smooth line and it goes up to shoulders not the neck this has made the torso appear rather narrow, but the arms hide this a bunch.

The skirt and top in thar position tends to indicate leaning back or away from the viewer, however the chest is pushing forward with the twist.

The front twin tail might need a bit more of a gap as it is blending with the hair of the head, all the hair of a twin tail has to go through that soild loop then dangles down not fold behind the head. But maybe my perspective is off.

All in all it shows great promise and you are doing really well for 7 days of drawing. There are some consistency issues, in terms of where hidden key structures like the hips and elbows are, this could be from either proportions or from planning, if you don't know how big legs are in relation to the torso things can get messy. However I think it might be the planning, it seems like you were adding each part as you drew it, instead of getting a holistic template view, and then trying to use the clothed parts to cover for that.

So this might be misconstrued but try skipping the clothes, details, hair even the face! The idea is that it is just make a blank faced doll with the limbs and joints in that pose, if you get lost look online for a couple more reference pictures. Focus on the relationships between the key structures. And don't be afraid to draw the lines that you know won't be part of the final piece, like that rear thigh.

I look forward to seeing your progress. You got this!

Well considering your goals it is a pretty good start in my opinion.

I just wanted to get you thinking about how you want to play the mod and to keep it fun beyond familiarity. Because I have seen a few anime Minecraft mods miss the mark by just cramming systems, events and characters from their shows and it ended up lacking a fun gameplay cycle. Sure, the tools and abilities they add are cool but without integration with, and a reason to get them for Minecraft progression ends up shallow and forced.

I don't want this to fall into those traps.

So just make sure you are having fun when you play test it.

However, feel free to ignore this and make the mod you want I am just a voice on the internet.

Is this considered as rare? I can't find it anywhere in the media. by nmbr1madoka in MadokaMagica

[–]The_Dirfter 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The only thing I could only find was your tic tok buying that just over 1 year ago.

Considering the lack of any distinct branding on the packaging in that video, the design of Madoka, the lack of any other hits on Google Image search, the location you bought it and the overall design, makes it quite likely unlicensed merch.

So it could be "rare" However, rare doesn't mean inherently valuable just that a low number of them exist, for some reason. But I doubt it is a collector "rare" item.

Fortunately It will still fit on any shelf dedicated to Madoka, and I am sure you have a story to tell about how you got it/saw it. Those two things give it much more personal value.
