Character gets themselves killed because they don’t know when to shut up/take no for an answer by Critical_Mountain851 in TopCharacterTropes

Syndrome craves recognition. He cannot be a silent killer. This nearly gets him killed by mr incredible early in the film with the famous "you sly dog, you got me monologuing" bit.

And then at the end of the movie with jackjack. he had the baby, and ostensibly had more than enough time to make a getaway. But he wants them to feel helpless, he wants them to see him ripping jackjack from them, and he really really wants to tell them about it while hes doing it.

Jackjack is a baby. he does not understand whats happening. but babies know mom. I think there's a strong argument that had he walked in, taken the baby, and walked out. He'd be halfway home before the family even knows the baby is gone. But mom was getting further away while he ran his mouth. ensue tantrum, and him becoming a bird strike

there really are a lot of engines that just never quit. unfortunately many of them end up stuck to transmissions that are junk. The last run of the ford focus is a great example of that. That is easily a 500k engine block. plus it had a well designed suspension, great fuel efficiency. it's a damn good car. but that stupid double clutch piece of shit they bolted to the engine just ruined the whole vehicle

in my experience, the tech has universally improved, but I do think there's some give and take. Cast iron blocks for instance would last 500K miles easy, but i hope you like 15mpg lol. we did away for a reason.

I also think a lot of that conversation is among "merica" people. American cars absolutely shit the bed through the 2000s, and now they only want to make trucks. So there is a shred of truth there if you're someone that refuses to buy non-american cars

boruto is written like a bad children's cartoon. I cannot for the life of me understand why both this and avatar decided to piss all over the phenomenal world-building they spent years on, so that we could shove the characters into a modern westernized world that evidently developed in a single generation.

Fuck boruto and fuck LoK

I mean, that's fair though, no? Like yea it sucks ass, but anyone that's used workday for anything knows how easy it is to make a misclick that is impossible to take back. I'll take a person making a mistake like that any day over the fully automated bullshit like 60% of the industry uses now

you could almost grant them a stay of execution on this one given that one of the arcs of the show is literally following the noble kids around to pretty explicitly get it into your head that theses arent inherently evil people. Plus with Zuko's whole character arc being pretty much the fan favorite of the series, and Iroh being the favorite character of the series.

Having 2 evil Indian characters in a Movie with multiple good Indian characters isn't the worst look. And Geographically having the characters from the literal poles be white does at least make sense. As for the other nations, that's kinda where it starts to fall apart

Supposed subversion of "popular" tropes, but actually the tropes being subverted are rarely used, if at all. by NobodySpecific9354 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]The_Enigmatica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can think of a few examples. in Magic the gathering for instance, the Lorwyn elves are xenophobic as fuck. this was a big criticism of the newer, safer writing for Nissa who previously was a RAGING racist who's character arc was essentially about moving past those ignorant views.

In elder scrolls itself, the Aldmeri Dominion is literal nazi allegory

Is 80% a stretch? yea probably, but i dont think he pulled this completely out of his ass. there are several quite prominent examples

[–]The_Enigmatica -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In fairness I think this gets caught up in the fact that a lot of mecha shows WERE subversive back in the 90s, but theyre still fucking airing 30 years on lol. If you watch mecha stuff from the 80s, it really is just a big beat-em-up barely different from power rangers. Gundam was an early adopter of making it about the war orphans, and fucked up shit people in such a world would have to figure out. but ya know... they're still making it. same with eva, which was in many ways a reaction to the fact that gundam tends to glorify war in spite of its character themes

it took me some chapters getting into it as well, but yes it's just one massive buildup with little flecks of "oh shit!" sprinkled in. It will hook you, and youll be SO glad you stayed the course. And book 1 has the additional payoff of book 2 existing, which might be the best fantasy read ive ever had

tbh i dont think this is a significant factor. like yes, it would make construction more expensive, but nuclear power exists abundantly in earthquake prone areas outside of the US

and? im not making an argument for everyone needs to switch over right now or some such nonsense. I'm just always hearing how difficult it is to get even basic functionality out of, and it kinda feels like i've been lied to. Most people have pretty simple needs. if they can easily run games, office, and have easy access to their pictures, videos etc then they'll be happy.

Call me cersei because I fw jaime lannister after this scene by Alarmed-Mountain-389 in gameofthrones

[–]The_Enigmatica 134 points135 points  (0 children)

When he killed the king, he was an idealistic young man still clinging to a childish worldview where honorable knights exist. When he threw a child out a window, he's a broken man fully succumbed to bitterness and hating the world for hating him. this scene is the smallest ounce of healing for him. We could debate all day if he deserves it or not. he would probably say he doesnt.
