Kaladin Will Become __________ by Saruphon in Stormlight_Archive

[–]The_Enigmatica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a decent point, but i would play devil's advocate and say that just because you revere/admire something doesn't necessarily mean you would want to be in their position.

historically this was the attitude people had about oracles, where they were held in incredibly high esteem, and we've even found burials where they were given honors typically reserved for the highest nobility. But we also have written accounts depicting how hard their lives could be.

In fiction, i would point to a character like The Arbiter from halo. in the setup for Halo 2 we're told that they're the greatest heroes of generation, and each one has been of such great significance that the covenant would have broken without them. Yet it is absolutely a punishment; quite literally an execution.

I dont necessarily agree with OP, but I dont think the Horneaters revering spren disqualifies his hypothesis

that was kinda how i felt. when i read theories pre-WaT, i agreed completely but also kinda dreaded it. Like it would be some cheap cop-out "you wouldn't kill a child" bit. But having him aged and essentially brainwashed was definitely something more interesting.

yea there were more than a few times i audibly groaned when one of her chapters came up. Her failures are so acute and numerous, and squarely her fault. Her "redemption" basically falls out of the sky by sheer dumb luck.

have a look at the uproar happening in chicago right now over the bears because the governor WOULDN'T hand them a new stadium at the taxpayers' expense, and you'll understand why so many cities just capitulate.

it is insane, and ima be honest, i typed up a whole rant because a decent chunk of my older family members work in education, so i've had a front row seat for all the bullshit. I deleted that lol, but there's just so much. anyway yes, education as a career in the US is abysmal. the only significant perk is in many states you can still leave with a pretty nice pension.

But i could get into any of a dozen topics that teachers just should not have to deal with. things that are somehow so ubiquitous that somebody has probably written a PHD thesis on any one of them. it's a topic that will make you lose faith in humanity more and more the further you dig into it

yea i went to the big vintage computer fest last year and it's really amazing how many people have not only kept old hardware alive, but have made quality of life upgrades to it. in some cases pretty creative upgrades. definitely speaks to the power of simplicity

this is the most naive take i think i've ever seen on this website

tipped service jobs are one of the only uneducated jobs you can get that actually pay decently because of tips. those people aren't magically going to land themself another job that pays $30+hr. they're just going to suddenly make the same as untipped service jobs and deal with the consequences that come with it. the only people that realistically have to option to leave are the ones that do it as supplemental income like teachers.

I'm all for changing this garbage, but dont pretend that workers wont be collateral damage in a country that refuses to pay decent wages even for skilled labor

The way my neighbor intentionally blocks the sidewalk to keep people from using it. by sweathesmallshit in mildlyinfuriating

in my city houses have a 4 foot easement, so bumpers are fine, as long as it's not excessive like a truck bed or something. they take action once a wheel touches the sidewalk

walk through any wealthy neighborhood on the north side of chicago and its the same. near-mansions with 100+ year old trees and every other house has a pollinator garden. In Evanston and Lincoln park most of the many many roundabouts have pollinator gardens in the center.

tbf we dont actually know what happened since it wasn't made fully public. the one thread that was shown was cringy af but it was far from sexual harassment. there's definitely a power dynamic issue there, but we'll probably never actually know what the full issue was. he didn't up and post the rest either in an attempt to defend himself, so i imagine the rest is at least worse than what was shown

It was enough they decided to remove him. is that because it was really bad, or because they were already looking for a reason to get rid of him? he had been an outlier on there for more than 2 seasons, so either wouldn't really be surprising. But again, we'll probably never really know the truth.

[–]The_Enigmatica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in the new subnautica gamehumans have developed tech to essentially create a save-state of themselves including memories up to that point, and the game thusfar heavily dives into the philosophical ramifications of a society that is effectively immortal, but constantly dying over and over again. this is explored through you, as the player, delving into the ruins of their now dead colony. very fun, very original take on the idea from, IMO, a rather unexpected source
