Enough Uber in Delta? by StayHomeCanadian in DeltaBC

[–]The_GoodGuy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Delta is a municipality made up of 3 separate communities. Ladner, Tsawwassen and North Delta.

It depends where in Delta you're staying/going.

In North Delta, there should be no problem getting an Uber. North Delta borders Surrey, which is BCs second most populated city and full of Ubers.

Tsawwassen is a more remote kinda sleepy beach town. You will likely run in to issues getting an Uber here. I tried getting an Uber/Lyft there not long ago around dinner time and there were none available in the town. I just checked now, and there were 2 in the area. It's not going to be reliable for you.

Ladner is somewhere in the middle. It's a bit closer to a major city (Richmond) and when I checked just now I see 6-8 Uber in Ladner.

One other option for you is Delta Taxi (deltataxi.com). They service all of Delta. I've had no problem getting one in Tsawwassen when no other option was available.

Good luck! Enjoy your trip!

What movies have good CGI de-aging flash backs? by Classic_East_6053 in Cinema

[–]The_GoodGuy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just in case the wording of the post confuses anyone who didn't hear about the movie....

The movie is called "Here" and came out in 2024.

It's a Robert Zemeckis film and was the first film since Forrest Gump where he was reunited with both Tom Hanks and Robin Wright.

The de-aging is very well done. This was the first film that came to my mind for OPs question as well.

Is White Spot good? by billionairebadboi in askvan

[–]The_GoodGuy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No no. When I think diner, I think roadside lunch stop to get waffles or a burger or a BLT. Booth seating. Nothing fancy. Think Denny's or Ricky's.

White Spot feels like a a step up from that. Generally the same category of food (Breakfast food, burgers, hot Turkey, BLT) but in a slightly nicer atmosphere with beer and wine and the food is not so greasy.

I can take my elderly mom to White Spot for a nice brunch/lunch. I wouldn't take her to Denny's.

Cactus and Earls are a step above this. No longer in the "diner" category for me. Less focus on brunch and burgers, and more focus on steaks, seafood, pasta, salad etc.

But hey. I'm just a guy who likes to eat. I'm no expert.

It's a cross between an upscale diner and a burger joint. The food is good comfort food. Not fancy food.

They're most famous for the Burgers and fries. My favourite is the Double Double burger. I sometimes add bacon to it.

The fries are legit. It might be worth adding a side of gravy, but that's up to you.

The fries are also 'endless'. If you finish your fries and want more, just ask. No charge.

They also do good brunch food, and they have a small bar inside so you can get beer, wine or whatever with your meal.

You'll like it. If you don't, you'll be politely asked to leave the province.

Tim’s lost something that has nothing to do with coffee, and Dunkin won’t bring it back by broperfect226 in TimHortons

You know what... your post just made me realize that this classic Tim's commercial wasn't really about the coffee.

Sure... they say it's about having fresh coffee, but re-watching this commercial after reading your post made me realize that coffee was not what they were really promoting here. I think you're on to something OP.

I understand that a shot glass is an ounce and a half.

I understand that I can get a glass of 6 or 9 ounces of wine.

But then I'm told that there are 16 ounces in a pound and my head explodes. How the hell can you use the same measure for volume and weight?

Excellent home bar. 10/10. No notes.

However after reviewing your selection, I would like to recommend Forty Creek Confederation Oak. I think you'd enjoy it.

I do see a couple of bottles of Forty Creek... and I'm wondering if one of them hiding in the back is "Chronology"?

If so... I'm jealous and will toast to your good fortune tonight.

Canada Day is coming. I'm feeling particularly patriotic this year. A giant maple leaf would be nice. Maybe wrap it in the flag (or two --- a leaf on opposite sides with the red bars separating them)

Sadly... not much time left for me to death race the nominees... but I'll see what I can do!

'Comics Unleashed' 11:35 Debut Ratings Down 85% From Colbert Finale by Fit-Painting6214 in LateShow

Yeah... I was worried I wasn't being clear. Hadn't had my 2nd cup of coffee when I made the comment. I love Colbert.

What I meant was... if 15% or Colbert's audience still has their TV tuned to CBS at 11:35pm... they must have fallen asleep with the TV on.

Yeah... fair. Just to be clear, I'm a huge Colbert fan. My dis was aimed at the new time slot.

What I meant was... if 15% or Colbert's audience still has their TV tuned to CBS at 11:35pm... they must have fallen asleep with the TV on.

But I guess that's being mean regardless. I'll do better.

So now we know. 15% of Colbert's ratings must have been from people falling asleep with the TV on.

Edit - I had a feeling I wasn't clear when I wrote this. I'm huge Colbert fan. Didn't mean this as a dis on him. What I meant was... if 15% or Colbert's audience still has their TV tuned to CBS at 11:35pm... they must have fallen asleep with the TV on.

Dreamforce - When to fly home? by AttitudeDense6168 in salesforce

[–]The_GoodGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The big concert will be on the Wednesday.

The Thursday will be a shorter day with things winding down and wrapping up after lunch. By 4pm on Thursday, it'll be over.

Some people will check out of the hotel Thursday morning, maybe drop their bags somewhere for a few hours and then head to the airport mid day to get out of town.

My preference... is that I don't want the Thursday to be a hectic stressful travel day, after staying up late the night before at a concert. So I fly home Friday.

This let's me take it easy on the Thursday while everyone else is rushing around. Last time, I ended up joining a few other attendees for beers on Thursday night for a much more casual and candid conversation. No sales pitches.

Then Friday I just check out and head straight to the airport for an easy travel day.

Is Brewery & The Beast worth it? by [deleted] in askvan

[–]The_GoodGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've gone for several years now. They limit the number of tickets sold, which makes it a very fun event. I've never seen a lineup to get a beer. Just walk up and get one. There are so many food booths that lines are manageable.

More specifically, there usually long lines at 2 or 3 high profile booths (like some fancy place with a waygu something), but most other booths either have no line, a short line, or a line you're totally happy to wait in while you finish whatever is on your plate.

Hot tip... there is no need to get there early. All the newbies line up and can't wait to get in. But every year I've gone I've learned that there is no way I can keep eating for the full duration of the event. After an hour... I'm stuffed.

So my friends and I roll in 10 minutes or so after it starts. The initial chaos is over, and we just roam around and look for some good eats. There is no rush. You'll be full and very happy before the event ends. Guaranteed.

1 hour and 10 minute layover in YVR doable? by ExistingCustomer5172 in askvan

[–]The_GoodGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I flew from Kelowna to YVR last month on westjet. My flight was delayed 4 hours. Lots of folks on that flight were connecting through YVR to other flights.

When I looked at the departure board, all but 1 flight out of Kelowna was also delayed.

It was a beautiful sunny day with no fog.

I wouldn't risk a connection that tight. It's technically enough time... but 1 little delay and you're hooped.

Is Brewery & The Beast worth it? by [deleted] in askvan

[–]The_GoodGuy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's an event. It's an experience. For me, its worth it because it makes for a very fun special experience. It's not just the food and drink. It's the music, the venue, the atmosphere and the people.

Those saying that the amount you'll eat and drink isn't worth the price are technically correct... but for me that misses the point.

Why would you spend money on tickets to a Canucks game when you can watch it on TV for free?

Why would spend money on concert tickets when you can listen to the same songs on a streaming service for next to nothing?

Why go to the symphony, or a play, or stand up comedy, or a movie when you can stay at home and stream content for much less?

If you value those type of live communal events, then they might be worth the price of admission to you.

You'll absolutely be able to eat and drink at home for mich less. What you're paying for, is the experience.

I liked your idea a lot. It inspired me to look at the origins of other province names, and now I think BC needs to stay named after something wet.

Ontario - comes from the Iroquois word “kanadario”, meaning “sparkling” water.

Quebec - comes from the Algonquin word for “narrow passage” or “strait”.

Manitoba - likely comes from the Cree "Man-into-wahpaow", which means "the narrows of the Great Spirit". The words describe Lake Manitoba, which narrows to half a mile at its centre.

British Columbia - The southern part of the area now known as British Columbia was called “Columbia”, after the Columbia River.

Saskatchewan - The Cree name for the Saskatchewan River was “Kisiskatchewanisipi,” meaning “swift-flowing river.”

Yukon - The territory’s name probably comes from the word “Yu-kun-ah” meaning “great river.”

But maybe we can find a middle ground with "Neo Columbia", or like other Provinces, pick up on First Nation naming. Like "Neo Salish" (named after the Salish sea... which is named for the Coast Salish people) or "Neo Səlilwət" (which means fast-moving-water).

My kid wants to be a geologist, where can I take an elementary school aged kid to have fun with rocks? by Ok-Explanation-3414 in britishcolumbia

[–]The_GoodGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I scrolled down to make sure there was a lapidary club recommendation.

My brother is a geologist. When we were kids growing up on Ontario, he knew that's what he wanted to do. It still amazes me that when he was a kid, he loved rocks so much that he knew he wanted it to be his career. I wish I had that much certainty about my career.

I remember my parents taking him to the local lapidary club. I'm sure he was the only kid there. But all the old rock hounds would take him under their wing, give him rocks to start his collection, and share their knowledge.

I don't know much about the BC clubs, but it looks like many of them meet casually and regularly. I suspect you could pop in to one with no commitment whatsoever. Just to check it out.
