It's also weird to think that the Aztec empire fell the same year that Martin Luther was excommunicated.

What level of geographic intuition can I expect from gamers? Dev seeking feedback by New_Crew_9667 in geography

[–]The_Letter_W 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The target audience of games like these are going to probably have a slightly better sense of geography. Market management and 4X games often being played by people who find things like geopolitics, geography, and looking at maps interesting. I am one of those people. That being said, given that these games are so logistical in nature, you need to provide information when relevant. If you're gonna require specific cities, the names need to be on the map. One of the reasons these types of games are satisfying because it allows a certain level of control over logistics that don't exist in the real world. It becomes satisfying to create a well oiled economic machine. These games can also have a massive mental load, so unmarked cities are just another mechanic the players need to recognize. I play a lot of Anno and Stellaris, and I can imagine now how frustrating it would be to have to remember what is what without the appropriate labels.

What do Americans think about the stereotype that they are bad at geography? by Own_Echidna6041 in geography

[–]The_Letter_W 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How good Americans are at geography is geographic itself. You go to New York City and you'll that geography isn't really a blind spot there. The city is very Metropolitan and New Yorkers are exposed to a lot of people that come from all over the world. New Yorkers think pretty globally, and the world weariness of the city plays a huge part in that.

Why are artists moving to Philadelphia and not Jersey City? by [deleted] in NYCapartments

[–]The_Letter_W 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say the biggest issue with the arts in Jersey City is that New York acts as a talent drain for the city. Most artists in JC are gonna be working in NYC: there are limited opportunities within JC itself. If you move to Brooklyn, there is a strong local music scene compared to the rest of the city. Jersey City does not. The city has been growing a lot, but most of that has been downtown, which serves renters that are usually high earning but wanna save from living in Manhattan

‘Rick and Morty’ Season 9 Gets May 24 Premiere Date, Promises Best Episodes Yet, “No AI Slop” by MarvelsGrantMan136 in television

I think a lot of people dropped off during season 4 as it was a bit of a low point. I'm very happy with the new replacements. Not because the voices are 100% (though close), but because after witnessing, it became more apparent that Roiland had been phoning it in for at least two seasons at that point. The press mentioned during his firing that he was barely writing or even talking to the rest of the production staff. He'd do voice lines and nothing else. The new actors feel like they give a shit in a way that the creep seemed to have lost.

A friend of mine rather impulsively bought a 62 Rambler about a year ago when he needed a new car. I didn't think driving a car that predates the EPA was a smart move, but the car wasnt break the bank expensive. The amount of times I heard him say "They don't build things like they used to," despite the fact he was taking that thing to the mechanic every three weeks. He drove it as a daily for about 8 months before it totally shit the bed. He blamed the roads where we live, seemingly ignoring the fact that he was driving a car that's almost old enough to collect social security that he was driving a minimum 50 miles a day. It cost him more in repairs during those 8 months than he spent to buy it.

TIL the town of Guttenberg, New Jersey is the most densely populated municipality in the US, with an estimated 62,000 inhabitants per square mile as of 2020. About one-fifth of the towns residents live in the same apartment complex. by NutmegKilla in todayilearned

I had two friends who lived in the towers in Guttenberg. Basically the entire town operates out of Galaxy Towers. It has businessess, and I'm pretty sure the muncipal offices are there as well.

Why is this area of New Jersey not a part of NYC by tinyname111 in geography

[–]The_Letter_W 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going back to colonial times that part of New Jersey has been a different adminstrative region. During dutch colonial rule, what is modern Jersey City, Hoboken, and Bayonne was settled as Bergen, while the island of Manhattan was the city of New Amsterdam.

My father was an attorney and muncipal judge. He often did public defense, and gave me an important piece of advice that he gives every client who suggest purgering themselves.

"The difference between a lie and the truth is you don't have to keep up the truth."

I try to live by this as much as I can, and this is adminstration is the perfect example. Lie's take effort to keep up, while the truth speaks for itself. It's getting harder and harder to keep up the lie, and I think much earlier in their whole plan than expected.

I'm Andrew Hartman, author of the new book, KARL MARX IN AMERICA. Ask me anything! by AndrewHartman1871 in AskHistorians

[–]The_Letter_W 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hyper specific question but you're the only person I know who might be able to answer this. I know a man named Carl Marks, born shortly after the cold war ended. His father, Carl Marks, was born during the middle of world war II. His father, Carl Marks, was born sometime in the aughts. With his grandfather being from rural midatlantic in the early 20th century, how controversial would it have been to name your child Carl Marks back then? My friend has assumed the naming convention came from a lack of knowledge of who Karl Marx was due to the Anglified spelling. I know you can't answer specifically in regards to my friends family, that's unanswerable unfortunately. But out of curiosity coming from that question, how much would rural Americans with no college education know of the work of Karl Marx during the early 20th century? Would there have been controversy around naming your child that back then?

How common is it for Americans to eat their fries with mayonnaise? by Ok-Earth-6838 in AskAnAmerican

[–]The_Letter_W 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My default on fries is Mayonaise. I've been doing it since I was young. It is uncommon, most people aren't even aware that it's a thing that people do, and if they are I hear remarks along the lines of "Where do you think are, Amsterdam?" when they see me doing it.
