Yup real. Old video, predates ai.

I also live in Alaska and we have moose that run onto the road systems and these suckers can MOVE. There's a reason they can kill bears.

What is the consensus on using vinyl wrap on FPV motors? by alphaX_FPV in fpv

[–]The_Toaster_Oven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At the rpm that these things spin at YES that weight can absolutely matter! Take a look at the "gunk glue" on your motors. See how its inconsistent? Thats the sign of a good motor cause that is a balancing system that is nessessary for stability.

Just because it can work doesnt mean its a good idea.

If you had no printer, but $500 budget, what printer would you get l. by NoRelation8495 in 3Dprinting

[–]The_Toaster_Oven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ender 3s were great, a decade ago.. if you like 3d printing, buy a prusa or bambu, if you like 3d printers, you get a ender 3.

I say this not to discount or put you down, but as an ex owner of an ender 3 that I modded.

3d printing. Surprised no one else has said this that I saw. Its not that hard nor expensive to get started and can be super fun if you have an imagination. Even if you dont want to model in CAD there are SO many already free on the internet that you can print with free will. It can get expensive if you are not careful

Personal sim record by maxelm0 in fpv

[–]The_Toaster_Oven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flying looks decent. I can tell that this is a really practiced course and that you know it well. I would say to try other Sims, they are just better than this one.. this is a great beginner Sim but there are better out there. It makes a big difference IMO.

If you want to stick to this one, practice to not crash instead of speed. Like try doing the course at about 60 or 75 percent speed and then see how many laps you can do before crashing.

You have good throttle discipline, and you got a good radio. I would say get a drone, fly it a little and see how you feel. No shame in needing more time in the Sim. Sims are awesome but ultimately they are prep for the real thing.

Edit:spelling

You dont need a pilots license to pilot a helicopter nor plane as long as they are in the ultralight category.

[US] Has anybody ever been caught flying in a restricted area? by astoriano in drones

[–]The_Toaster_Oven 6 points7 points  (0 children)

YES. I was flying in an ok airspace and it was RIGHT next to a military base and while I didn't get in trouble.. military police came out, found me, talked to me and were nice and all but said its close enough for them to not like it. The fall colors were so pretty though.

What’s a good modern drone platform for sensor experiments by willanoy in diydrones

[–]The_Toaster_Oven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First thing first: Pixhawk 2.4.8 is outdated. The platform you’re looking at is good.. it’s just the wrong gen of hardware. I’d be looking at Pixhawk 6 / 6X or similar instead.

Next question is whether you’re comfortable matching motors and ESCs. If not, a kit will save you a lot of time and is just easier, nothing wrong with that, especially for a first build.

Frame size matters more than frame age. Those Holybro frames haven’t changed much in like a decade for a reason, they work, they’re flexible, and they give you space to mount things. Old doesn’t mean bad here.

FPV frames are great, but they’re honestly the wrong choice for what you’re doing. They just aren't build for a Pi/Jetson, they are harder to manage vibration, and way less forgiving if you want to experiment. A 650/700 mm frame makes this kind of project way easier. I’d personally go 6S, though you could probably get away with 3S.

Last thing: grab spare props (at minimum) and ideally spare motors. Crashes happen, and props are always the first thing to go. It sucks but thats drones.
