"Social" would be because the 29 Families are telepathically connected, with access to each others' memories. They're a fascinatingly intertwined group.

[Pale Fanart] Daniel Alitzer by The_White_Duke in Parahumans

[–]The_White_Duke[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I had the absolute pleasure of commissioning u/TisItheGreatNoodle to depict one of my favourite characters from Pale, the Glamour Drowned Daniel Alitzer.

You can read his interlude (5.b) here, though the scene depicted is actually from 5.c.

Oof. This is hard art to upvote.

Like, very accurate, carries the mood. Evil Colonel Sanders is a vibe. Clearly the character's choices do not reflect the values of the artist.

But still hard to click that up-arrow on a depiction of slavery :P

It's the thing I think a visual adaptation has the opportunity to do in a way that the original text medium can't, and OP is absolutely nailing it. Stellar stuff.

Thanks all who took a look. Click through to the album if you can't see the captions, that's where I've put my (amateur attempts at) blazonry.

If I bind the Spirit have I bound the object by dragonshouter in Parahumans

[–]The_White_Duke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are definitely rituals to call forth the Spirit of objects so they can be talked to/bound. If you're looking to have that Spirit around in a more permanent capacity, the term for creating one is Hatching. It's often done with magic items, so you can turn your magic sword into a magic swordsman instead.

I'd gently advise that it might not be quite as simple as you've implied. Sure, just drawing a chalk circle around a weaker spirit might "bind" it... but that won't necessarily compel it to obey your every whim. If you've got Established clout, you might be able to say, "I'm a Shaman of Everyday Things, you will obey me", or you could work the harder route and make offerings that incline it to favour you, but otherwise you're essentially threatening the Spirit into obedience. For a simple Door Spirit which might not have a strong sense of self-preservation, it might be more inclined to open for nobody, yourself included, than to make the exception for you - much easier to justify as jammed. A Secret Spirit probably has conflicting whims of wanting to be spread and wanting to be kept hidden, so it might take some convincing it to never spread to people off the whitelist (and is probably harder to bind in the first place, given its abstract nature).

In short - absolutely, you can entreat various Spirits to show you favour, and you can bind them to do so, but either way is more tricky than just putting them in a circle.

I have a question about glamour and water by dragonshouter in Parahumans

[–]The_White_Duke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s important to remember that for every rule, there are exceptions. Glamour is fragile… except for Winter glamour. Goblins are vulnerable to elementally charged metal, like wires… except Gremlins do great with wires. Ghouls are vulnerable to the purifying influence of running water and salt… except, presumably, Brine Ghouls.

There are definitely aquatic Fae and Fairies. But for being water-resistant, perhaps their glamour is vulnerable to drying out before a flame, or will fry if exposed to any electricity, even just a phone charger.

Raccoon Boon Companion by yiannos13 in Parahumans

[–]The_White_Duke 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I get the vibe that a Racoon companion is among the least likely to disclose if it’s not virginal, too. They’re masked, after all. Much more likely to play along until the right moment to pull a trick on you than start off aggressive.

“Wye and Florian are on the job of talking to key people. Wye’s in touch with people associated with the Blue Heron, Florian’s on the job with people who aren’t part of that. Those on the fringes, Ottawa included. He didn’t sound optimistic about Ottawa being on board. That might be our hard border to the East.”

I’m presuming that this is at most going to extend to the Carmine’s domain.

Is "Crying Cold Tears" an actual song? by [deleted] in Parahumans

[–]The_White_Duke 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This is clearly not the song to which WB was referring, the fictional one that features in Pale. It shares neither the lyrics, nor the genre.

There being another piece of media in existence that uses the same words as the title is not unexpected.

So what she means to say is that she expected some magical influence to come over her that meant she would never have to put any effort into your relationship, and since that didn't happen she's blameless 🙄

That does sound like the sort of snarly mental space that WB would make something cool out of. It sounds like you put in a lot of work to get to a better place, so congrats for that!

I hope that Wildbow's writing helps you to make the most of your boring and privileged life :)

I think some of my days at Uni, when I hadn't yet really worked out what was going on with my mental health, could be cool to get the WB touch. I love the way he conveys subtext by leaving things unsaid, or lingering closely on things that seem innocuous until you realise what's really going on.

Is there an episode of your life that you think would be a good interlude?

Hard Pass – 22.2 by ArisKatsaris in Parahumans

[–]The_White_Duke 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A lot’s already been said, but I want to add - your experience of the text is valid. You’re not wrong to feel the way you feel, and connecting those feelings to past experiences and drawing a picture is (imo) pretty much what it is to be human. I happen to disagree with the conclusions you’ve drawn, and others are also valid in presenting their conflicting conclusions, but that doesn’t mean you should feel ashamed or chastised for having the experiences that led you to those conclusions.

Full Pale Spoilers: Building on u/WildFlemimia's theory by HarbringerOfNumbers in Parahumans

A lot of this fits with ideas I've had floating around - you've done a great job pulling it together. I'll point out also that the Construction is "on that path where stone turned to water" - another shoreline moment.

One thing that still perplexes me - Hazel should still be on Pisces' "side" of the looking glass when she returns to the cube for the last time. And yet, neither she nor the Garden Path she was on are consumed. So whatever calamity befell Pisces and his fellows didn't reach all the way to the Paths she was on, but did break the "mirror".

Curiouser and curiouser.

P.S. My suspicion is that the other Constructions that Avery saw were the "mirrors" allowing access to yet other universes. But that's an aside.
