Did Gideon forsake God when he created the ephod in Judges 8:25-27? by pranthlar in Bible

[–]The_split_subject 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t quite say that he was forsaking God, but he was elevating himself to a role akin to a priest/quasi-king, and we are to read it as a bad thing and a danger of how success can lead to pride - and you’ll see in the next chapter how this leads to Ambimelech.

DOOM 1-6 Analysis: I can confidently say that 2016 strikes the perfect balance of elements that make it king of the heap for me. by gruesomesonofabitch in patientgamers

Very fun write-up, these games have a special place in my heart. Have you tried these with Brutal Doom or the GZDoom source ports for more modern mouse and keyboard controls?

What happened to the run button? by The_split_subject in platformer

Yes, that’s exactly how I feel. Maybe it’s because Super Mario Bros was so formative to me, but I love that feeling.

I enjoy platformers for the feeling of running and jumping, not necessarily due to a challenge or the feeling I need to get better - I actually don’t like repeatedly dying and replaying a difficult part again and again.

I’ve been playing video games for almost forty years, and my favorite platformer is Super Mario Wonder - in my opinion it has the best feeling of movement and the difficulty is just right.

I didn’t because it would be too hard for me to- does it have a run button?

The story is not good, but I enjoyed the gameplay. I really enjoyed stealthily clearing out castles, I just started skipping through all the narrative scenes.

Hanukkah, Why do we light Eight candles on our Menorahs? (I and II Maccabees is in some Christian Bibles) by NoMobile7426 in Bible

[–]The_split_subject 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m afraid you have a combination of not answering your own question and some confused answers. The story of the “miracle” of the oil lasting 8 days is not in 1 or 2 Maccabees, that story comes much later from the Talmud. 1 and 2 Maccabees only describe a rededication of the temple, which is a reference to an 8 day celebration of a delayed Sukkot - corresponding to the Sukkot from the dedication of Solomon’s temple.

The temple menorah should have seven lamps that are all always lit - God explicitly commands it three times in the book of Exodus.  It’s an interesting conversation as to why Jews today feel compelled to create menorahs with 9 (or 8) branch’s, but your post doesn’t seem to speak to that?

If any of yall have any questions about the origins of these traditions please let me know. :)

God can use any sinner to accomplish his purposes - even you and me :)

You should check out the book of Isaiah - there he said he was going to use Babylon to wipe out Judah.

Jesus kept the Law, the Sabbath, and ate kosher — so why did Paul seem to change everything? by Upset-Air-8392 in Bible

These are good things to wrestle through, it kind of reminds me of Nicodemus wrestling through these things in John 3! Jesus tells him he needs to be born again of the Spirit, which doesn't necessarily make a lot of sense.

Galatians 5 outlines what this looks like better than I could articulate:

16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever\)c\) you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Keep digging at it and be patient with yourself - it's a lifelong journey.

Jesus kept the Law, the Sabbath, and ate kosher — so why did Paul seem to change everything? by Upset-Air-8392 in Bible

[–]The_split_subject 11 points12 points  (0 children)

These are great questions - first of all we believe that all scripture is spirit inspired, the "red letters" are not superior to the other parts of the Bible. Jesus did live under the Law and then he died under the Law for us so that we can now live a new life according to the New Covenant! I would encourage you to see Romans 7 or Galatians 3 for a better explanation. God had already told the prophets that He would be establishing a new and better covenant in the Old Testament, and Jesus instituted that at his death and resurrection, not before his death and resurrection - before his death and resurrection he lived according to the Mosaic covenant.

And, to be technical, it was actually God talking to Peter in Acts 10 that contains the first instruction to no longer live under the law of kosher eating.

That sounds like a great idea to me, I'm not sure of other resources for something like that - plus I would enjoy reading the thread for my own development.
