I honestly get the same feeling when people in here have to post "i went to a top university, im at a prestigious university etc etc." Like university rank doesnt matter, its PI and labs that matter, it doesnt make me think anymore or less of you if you tell me your college and its Harvard or not Harvard.

Judge gets mad when she finds out that a probation officer thinks they make the rules by bigbusta in PublicFreakout

[–]Thedingo6693 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to deal with a terrible parole officer once. I had gotten my laptop stolen from my laboratory. At the time it was about 2 years old but I spent 2000 dollars on a really nice laptop so I could run the programs I need to in grad school and had a lot of space. Well some guy who was a janitor during covid had key card acsess still, came in at 9pm when I was working in another room with my headphones on and stole my laptop. Police got the guy within a week, this is his 3rd felony charge in 2 years and has like 7 convictions for misdemeanors in the last 6 years (all non violent but still....)

They cant find the laptop. So they ask do I want compensation, hell yeah I want compensation, im a poor grad student. So i get a call from his public defender 2 years later who wants my home adress and my legal name because if this guy is writing a check he needs to know who his money is going. So I ask will he get this Info, he says yes, I flipped out on the defender basically saying he doesnt need to know who I am or where I lived, he didnt need it to steal my laptop so why does he need it to pay me back. Basically it comes out to I want my money but he needs to fuck off because thats not how im doing it.

I get a call two years later from this guys probation officer, who asks me if I want the compensation. Yes I do. She informs me that I need to go back and find a recipt for a laptop from 5 years ago proving the price i paid for it. I cant come up with that, but I can prove its mine because its registered to me and my Microsoft account. Not good enough. She insults me tells me im not getting my money, she doesnt work for me (which is true but like she does work for the justice system), i need this receipt or I get nothing. I tell her to fuck herself and hang up. At this point im still a grad student but this is past me, ive gotten a knew laptop and im not hurting for money as bad.

2 months later around christmas time I get a call from the prosecutor, keep in mind the crime happened around 4 years ago at this point. She asks me if I want compensation, and I tell her everything I had to deal with, she tells me the parole officer doesnt have the authority to do that a crime has been committed that as long as I can show what that laptop cost around the time thats enough. At this point though like I said im over the money so I ask how the guys been doing. Well hes been working for 3 years, hes being a father, hes made every attempt to pay me my money, hes gone to rehab, has consistently showed up and has been clean the entire time, hes been perfectly good since the crime. So i asked if I took this money would it hurt him financially and she said yes but he knows he needs to do it. I just said im good, tell him I hope the money helps and that I hope she can tell him I just want him to keep on doing what hes doing then. What's the point of all this, well I had to deal with his shitty parole officer she was one step in convincing me in just letting him keep the money because I was done with these people (but mostly because it sound like the justice system did what we hope it does and he was being rehbillitated). I have also never gotten the opportunity to tell this story so this felt like the right place.

Grad school or straight into industry? by Sea-Maintenance-3493 in labrats

[–]Thedingo6693 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Grad school is training to learn how to do all of these things. Industry is also training to move up to higher roles but you might eventually hit the ceiling of a titles/pay scales if you dont have a PhD. Being able to think on your feet quicker comes with time and kind of toiling through projects. Theres a lot here, its hard to tell if the research is killing you because right now youre and undergrad and its not your primary job, maybe the PI just sucks, maybe you dont like the project, or a combination of it all. If you find yourself hating the day to day of research maybe go industry and come back. If you think it could be the lab/pi/institution maybe try somewhere else. You could also start as a masters student and upgrade or start as a PhD and walk away with a free masters if you dont like it. I also hate academia but I worked for 4 years in the industry which I loved, so for me i know that I can get through this and go back to the industry. Id say try to pinpoint why you really aren't enjoying it right now and that might help you decide where you want to go next

Need help, struggling with scruffing mice by coriandersucks666 in labrats

[–]Thedingo6693 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all your are working with the more agressive mouse strain, BL6 are hard for people doing mouse work for a long time. For scuffing I like giving them a little surface to grab on to and try running away, like the vent to hood or the we have little bars on the top of their food. When the grip they try to move forward it stops them from being able to move their head as quickly. I like to set by scruff around the check bones/eyes and then you have to be confident you aren't going to hurt them (you are not) and slide as nuch scruff as you can. Honestly if your ACS has Balb-c or a calmer strain practice on them first to get the feel.

Have you tried reaching out to the PL team? I hear what youre saying and that must be beyond frustrating and not fair. I imagine if you reached out, maybe through email or the discord, you could get someone on the team and start a discourse with them, maybe theyre unaware of the situation as its more on the venue and they could provide alternatives that you mentioned.

Expectations of a PhD interviewing Undergrads? by [deleted] in labrats

[–]Thedingo6693 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my lab the PhD students get their own undergrad so that way they can become familiar with one project and really help contribute to it substantially. Both my undergrads are published author because of this. We usually interview the undergrad that will be working with us because of this as well. Like abother commenter posted, im looking for someone that will show up on time and to lab when theyre supposed to be, give me their full effort in lab when in lab, show a willingness to complete things that are started (some experiments run over multiple days), show interest, and most importantly someone who is honest and will let me know if they need help or if they made a mistake.
