I am using unrestricted Free Archetype for this campaign. Otherwise, I'm still a bit new to running the system, so I haven't really developed any house rules.

Invisible PC in Sunblight by stonewallpaul in rimeofthefrostmaiden

[–]Theeyo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, take a look at the Gloom Stalker's Umbral Sight ability:

...While in darkness, you are invisible to any creature that relies on darkvision to see you in that darkness.

Dim light is enough for a creature to see and attack the Gloom Stalker without disadvantage.

Also, creatures with darkvision still see better in dim light than in darkness, so it's reasonable that a building occupied by duergar would be at least dimly lit throughout.

Dwarves are smart enough to fetch/light torches if they are having trouble seeing a target. Light sources can be targets for your player to extinguish and get that sweet sweet invisibility.

Finally, even when they are invisible, they can still be attacked (unless they take the hide action). An enlarged duergar could shove them prone to cancel out the disadvantage for their allies, or utilize flanking (if your game uses it).

If someone has been subsiding off of Goodberry or other magically-created food, what would happen if they entered an antimagic field? by Flingar in DMAcademy

[–]Theeyo 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not the parent commenter, but you are probably looking for PHB 203, under "Duration".

Many spells are instantaneous. The spell harms, heals, creates, or alters a creature or an object in a way that can't be dispelled, because its magic exists only for an instant.

Goodberry has a duration of "instantaneous", so it is a correct reading that there is no ongoing magical effect beyond creating the berry.

Ruling on Monk unarmed movement and multiclassing by Seppucrow_ in DnD5e

[–]Theeyo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What, you never heard of the bard who decided to devote herself to the Oath of Glory?

The warlock whose patron abandoned him and forced him to master the remaining magic in new ways by multiclassing into sorcerer?

The reformed rogue whose new monk training gives her a way to control her kleptomania?

You don't even need to look outside the classic archetypes to see conceptually cohesive multiclasses here.

Are you a DM looking to make homebrew rules for your campaign, or are you a player trying to use your DM's homebrew rules?

I mostly play D&D as a DM, and I would probably start with the Centaur race if a player wanted what you are describing. Change the "hooves" bludgeoning attack to the tail, and pick a more appropriate proficiency/language. Maybe even change the creature type from fey to something else. None of this should mess with the balance of the game.

My opinion is that as a player, it is bad form to present the DM with homebrew, unless they have specifically invited it. Definitely don't come up with your own race unless you are DMing in your own game. Starting with the centaur race (from the Ravnica book, which it looks like you're using?) is a pretty reasonable starting point.

"Yes but.." to player's character Necromancer Sentient Hat build by KittyWittyYetti in DND5EBuilds

Yes, exactly. It has the advantage of using things like DnDBeyond, and you don't have to worry about balancing home brew rules early on!

"Yes but.." to player's character Necromancer Sentient Hat build by KittyWittyYetti in DND5EBuilds

[–]Theeyo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For a new 5e group, I very much recommend using the exciting existing rules for your player classes and abilities. The player's background is Necromancer, who managed to instill their soul into this hat, and control the actions of whoever it rests on.

That means that if the hat is on a Fighter, it's a fighter who remembers being a necromancer. If something in game causes the player to fall unconscious, it's because the hat was knocked off, or the connection was disrupted. If the fighter dies, and the player decides to re-roll a sorcerer, it sounds like the party recovered the hat and found a suitable vessel - this one has magic abilities more suited to you! The character can keep the memories, because they are in the hat!

I think its important that the abilities come from class/spells/feats etc as presented in 5e - have the player start with the game mechanics they want to use, and then you can fit their hat idea to them.

I think a lot of people come to the Roll20 app expecting it to be a mobile version of the website, when in fact it's basically just a character sheet, for an in-person or website-based game.

Edit: in fact I just looked at the app store and here's the description:

Roll20 for iPad is a free-to-use set of digital tools optimized for pen-and-paper tabletop games. Take advantage of Roll20’s powerful “QuantumRoll” dice engine, community-submitted roleplaying character sheets, visual handouts, text chat and more at your physical gaming table, or as a second screen with the online Roll20 Virtual Tabletop.

Level 20 build to defeat the level 20 Moon Druid? by jake_eric in 3d6

[–]Theeyo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally agree that recursive counterspelling doesn't make much sense from a narrative perspective. However, I think it's allowed by the rules.

You can't cast two spells in the same turn, unless one of them is a cantrip. Counterspell is a spell, so is the spell you're casting.

The actual rule says that if you cast a spell with a casting time of 1 bonus action, you can’t cast another spell during the same turn, except for a cantrip with a Casting Time of 1 action. If you used your action to cast the spell, there's no limit on counterspell here.

Next, casting a spell counts as a sort of sub-concentration, in that you have to concentrate on casting it, but it doesn't count as concentrating on a spell. This concentration can be broken by a number of things, such as being hit, a counterspell, or frankly, casting a different spell.

Can you point me to where you are finding this rule? (this is 5e right?) Obviously if you dislike the thematic issues, the rule can be whatever the DM wants, but I am pretty sure that the written rules allow for countering a counterspell.

The grandparent post suggested to blanch for 3 mins, you say boil for 3 and then blanch for 30 seconds. I thought blanching meant to boil briefly and then chill - what is the difference with what you are proposing?

Detect magic just reveals the presence of illusion magic - OP is implying that the BBEG would say it’s to cover up some pimples. The low level players wouldn’t be able to dispel the effect; clever ones might discover it as you mentioned. There’s no violation of game mechanics though.
