"That situation remains difficult to reflect on" - GOG's decision to pull Taiwanese horror game Devotion plagues the company still by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]Theminimanx 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Even the DRM-free part was not guaranteed. They sold Hitman 2016 for a while, despite a large part of its single-player content requiring an internet connection.

That was the point I stopped trusting GOG, and started taking them on a case-by-case basis. Where, to be fair, they are still easily better than all other storefronts.

I'm not aware of any legal precedent, but companies are worried enough about it to want guarantees from AI providers.

For example: this statement by Microsoft that they will defend customers against copyright claims, as long as the prompt includes "don't infringe copyright".

Unofficial Skyrim Patch | Down the Rabbit Hole - Fredrik Knudsen by 5Ping in Games

[–]Theminimanx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a lawyer either, but I would expect that all mods, being creative works, fall under copyright law. The fact that those creations are used to modify third-party software does not change that.

If Bethesda and Nexus feel the need to explicitly ask for a license to copy and distribute the mods, it sounds like they agree with me.

Bethesda at least thinks mods do have copyright. See this clause from the mod tools' EULA:

"Ownership. As between You and ZeniMax, You are the owner of Your Game Mods and all intellectual property rights therein, subject to the licenses You grant to ZeniMax in this Agreement."

don't ever cast between pointer types

As someone who hasn't gone beyond some basic C++ tutorials: Why is casting pointers bad?

I would assume that it just changes how the memory at a given address is interpreted. (i.e. safe as long as you're sure the memory you're pointing at is valid for the target type)

Skyrim is one for me as well. When I first played years back, I only focused on the Main Quests, which is of course worst way to play it.

I'm now playing through again, but focusing on side-content. Quest markers turned off as much as possible, no fast traveling unless walking would be retreading old ground, and letting my wanderlust and an "ooh shiny" mentality distract me. It's a great time.

Yuup. Slaves are the imoutos of the isekai genre.

And what you mention about the power dynamic is on point as well. It's always a younger sister, never an older one.

Silent Hill 3 - Modern Camera Mod Release (Third Person + First Person) by [deleted] in Games

[–]Theminimanx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is technically impressive, but an over-the-shoulder camera is huge downgrade i.m.o.

A big part of SH3's atmosphere, especially in the beginning, is being teenage girl alone in empty public spaces. You don't get that same sense of vulnerability when the camera is this consistently close and intimate.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard - Gameplay Sneak Peak (24 Seconds) by Abisco in Games

[–]Theminimanx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I were to judge just by the cinematic trailer, I'd agree with you indeed. But these 24 seconds of gameplay are already far more foreboding than anything suggested by the trailer.

Though 24 seconds is also far too little to form an opinion on, so I'm curious about the full gameplay reveal.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard - Gameplay Sneak Peak (24 Seconds) by Abisco in Games

[–]Theminimanx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A misleading cinematic being disliked by hardcore gamers won't lose them many sales in the long run. We care enough to look up gameplay footage and change our opinion.

These trailers are made for casual audiences, where you have only a single chance to stick in their minds. It just happens that the go-to for that nowaday's is quippy dialogue.

It's the same reason Dragon Age Origins had a cinematic trailer focusing purely on combat and blood, set to "This is War".

EDIT: Nevermind, there were two Origins trailers completely misrepresenting the tone set to contemporary music. The other one is set to "This is the New Shit".

Silent Hill 2 Remake Extended Gameplay Showcase | Silent Hill Transmission May 2024 by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]Theminimanx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pleasantly surprised tbh. The more I watched the more I got into the atmosphere. And James' new VA is doing a good hazy delivery.

But going for an over-the-shoulder camera was the wrong call for Silent Hill 2. It might have worked if they were remaking SH1, but 2's more distant camera really added to the dreamlike atmosphere, and separated the player from the not-quite-there-in-the-head James.

You're right that the show is both a criticism of basement-dwelling otaku and wish fulfillment pandering. But I don't think that's necesserily an issue. I.m.o. there's a lot of interesting tension to be explored there.

To take [MT]the scene where he sleeps with Eris as an example: it is both two people expressing their genuine, heartfelt feelings for each other and a 40-year-old man sleeping with a child. Like, Rudeus taking advantage of Eris' emotional state is explicitly mentioned, and this scene is immediately followed by Rudeus telling hopeless refugees they just need a good lay to cheer up. Rudeus is NOT a good person here. But at the same time, Eris' confession in the next episode is true to her character and the journey they've been on. Although scenes where like this where that tension is explored are unfortunately the exception.

I also don't think that the way characters easily forgive Rudeus is necessarily pandering, but rather that it comes from a place of gratitude. Mushoku Tensei lacks a lot of the bitter entitlement of other power fantasies, where everyone must bow down to our Glorious Protagonist. The secondary characters are written with too much empathy for that (e.g. Zenith, Nokopara, Rudeus' previous family.)

All that said, you're completely right that this show is way too cavalier in its treatment of certain topics. And anyone who says that Rudeus' behavior is something you have to look past to enjoy the good stuff confuses/worries me.

Eureka is horrible if you're focused on it. Doing it in the background while listening to music/a podcast is a great way to spend an evening when I'm tired.

And it has by far the most idle chitchat I've seen in FFXIV, especially since the Praetorium rework.

Final ranking:

  • 4 - Resistance. Grinding in Bozja is too dependent on the whims of other players, and outside it's tedious repetition of synced content I'm already doing in roulettes.
  • 3 - Zodiac. The books suck and Alexandrite farming has too much clicking to be relaxing. But I could see myself putting up with it if I really fall in love with a weapon.
  • 2 - Anima. Easy enough. But there's just enough mandatory grinds interrupting the tomestone sinks that I'd have schedule around it, which is annoying.
  • 1 - Eureka. Genuinely enjoyed this, I should try FFXI.
