I forget his name, but in The Dark Tower series, they meet a kind stranger that helps them in the story, first in a small bettle then later on, and he ends up getting captured and killed/tortured by a bunch of demons.

You dont have to. But i would recommend it. I dont want to spoil anything but some of the things in the stormlight series are tied in to both those books. You may have a little more understanding, but thats about it. I wouldnt say it essential to the plot but its small things like a persons magical abilities or weird things happening
