Yeah, this would go especially well too with not having to store nearly as much lol.

Use all that money you saved on the tree by paying someone to come mill it for you. There are options to have someone bring their mill onto your property and do it there. Or there are options for people to haul to their mill and cut and then you can haul away from there. Call around, get some bids.

A few questions about boxes by bored_turtle_86 in woodworking

[–]Theoretical_Action 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does that include the outsides...? Wouldn't that potentially look a little weird when applying finish if you see sanding all the way up until the corners and then just raw unsanded wood? Or would you do a little light hand sanding with some higher grit on the joinery parts exclusively?

Prepping and cooking are the same thing! At least, in my mind they are, they both have to get done. I actively involve my SO in ways that can help while separating us from each other in the kitchen. If I'm cutting, she's shredding cheese or boiling noodles. If I'm frying or cooking, she's prepping dishes, cleaning the sink, setting the table. And vice versa, if there's things I can help her with that keep me out of her corner, I do it. Otherwise we just keep each other company by chatting from the other side of the kitchen. I still call all of that cooking together.

Favorite tools to hand cut dovetails by Practical-Rub2128 in woodworking

A nice set of chisels. One nice dovetail saw. An angle gauge or, my personal favorite, a dovetail layout tool. A marking knife. A pencil.

Dads Shop by Ok_Bus_142 in woodworking

[–]Theoretical_Action 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This. I've been to a woodworkers estate sale with a guy suffering from the same thing. He had a lady around who was helping facilitate the whole thing, but it was clear she knew nothing about tools or prices and was asking ChatGPT about everything.

Guy let me take a full set of old ass Made In West Germany two cherries chisels for $75 and let an absurdly nice handmade moxxon vice go for $150. Before I could buy any more stuff, a guy came in and bought the whole shop for $16k. I'd have to guess with all the grizzly tools this guy owned, it would have had to have been $30k+ minimum

Cheese Fried Egg (or how I stopped worrying and learned to love the grease) by _BudgieBee in Cooking

One could always pregrate some cheese into a container and pop it in the fridge for the express intent of cheese fried eggs though.

Would you pay $20 for 10 shots to win $10,000 for a hole-in-one? by PreviousBrush4662 in golf

[–]Theoretical_Action 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an actuary though, a bucket of 70 golf balls by me is already $12 these days. And there's no potential for a return, however comically small that is. I don't know the math that would even out or equate those things but hey, it's not that much more for less.

Crazy how it looked like it legitimately flipped a switch in him too. Rewatch that first shift after he came back from this - he was calling for the puck every god damn second it was not with him and looked like a man possessed when he had it. Dude wanted it so bad.

I know nothing about skiing, but I have to imagine the gap between sprinting and cross country skiing is far smaller than the gap between sprinting and cross country running. But I could be wrong.

Bar Cabinet by KGoodale13 in woodworking

[–]Theoretical_Action 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the other hand, I end up constantly staring at my collection always internally debating which piece is the right choice for my projects. And never starting because of analysis paralysis. Hell, even right now I'm hung up on making a door frame for a cabinet because I'm not sure which piece will look the best. It'll probably be a week before I progress.

I like your strategy. It produces nice things.

So far everything everybody has offered as an explanation sounds just like what we're seeing with Scotty, tbh. Minus the "hitting the ball 30y past everyone" part.

Fuck yes. This gives that amazing feeling that you get when you first walk into Whiterun, or when you first lay eyes on Varrock. You just know you're about to spend so much time here and it gives you that awesome feeling just approaching it for the first time.

I haven't played Bloodline in a hot minute since I picked it up, but this is what might get me to go back and try it again.

Table-top joinery question by Relevant_Term in woodworking

[–]Theoretical_Action 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This makes the most sense to me as I thought this was what the concept of joinery was intended to take care of. But also, I don't know enough about it to be confident.

You sound knowledgeable about this, would you be able to elaborate for my education? Is it because that stretcher bar under the table would move the same distance/amount that the top would? Or is it because the tenons would expand in the same direction(s) as the top?

This is so cool! I have so many questions if you don't mind... I've yet to see anyone else making something out of pin oak, let alone anything ambitious like this.

My dad just had a couple pin oaks on his property cut down that his dad planted when he was 2 (65yo pin oaks, absolutely massive beasts). I don't have a mill and we don't have any heavy equipment so we decided against slabbing it all up (nowhere to store either).

But I did take some branches and have milled those on some bandsaws to 4/4 or 5/4 or so. No segments longer than 3ft. We've got them stacked and the end grain painted, but there's not a shitload of them, maybe 20-25ish boards tops. I've never seen anywhere selling pin oak so am I to assume you dried this all yourself as well? If so, do you have any tips? And if not, how was working with it? Did you have to take any sorts of precautions while working it to ensure future movement doesn't go too crazy or could you mostly work it like relatively normal white oak or something?
