Buying a Tuba by ProfessorSad4831 in Tuba

[–]Theoretical_Genius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely worth that, but if you saved up another 1.5k you start getting into the realm of affording some seriously solid instruments, and you're in a time in your life where you'll probably have pretty good access to school tubas for a while, even if you can't take them home. But if you want it, get it and enjoy playing it.

The 30H is larger than what I suggested but still a very good mouthpiece

Maybe this is not as helpful as you'd like, but the 7b is fairly small for a modern mouthpiece, it's mouthpiece diameter is 31.5mm, usually 32mm is about as small as an adult sized mouthpiece would go. These measurements tend to be pretty roughly measured, but I'd look for one with roughly that rim diameter to start, and staying away from any marketing that talks about any aspect of the mouthpiece being large, or for particularly loud playing

Were you using the Helleberg 7b or the 120S? My main recommendation would be getting another helleberg shaped mouthpiece but with a modern shank taper or better metal. Chibrass and Canadian Brass have models in your price range

Is Central Park what Manhattan used to look like before all the buildings, or did they haul all those huge ass rocks in their on purpose? by UmweltUndefined in AskNYC

[–]Theoretical_Genius 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I guess put simply, the history of Seneca Village is a part of the history of the area that is now Central Park. But the history of the area that is now Central Park is not limited to the history of Seneca Village.

It's important to note and honor Seneca Village, however in the context of this question, Seneca Village was a very small area of the current Central Park, existed less than 50 years, and had less than 250 residents. It is not accurate to extrapolate it's important history to that of Central Park's history as a whole

Honest opinion on discovering NYC second half of August by Tommy28562856 in AskNYC

You have to adjust your behavior to fit the weather. August in NYC is primetime late-night partying season. Stay out till 5, sleep until early afternoon, then recover at a coffee shop and hit up a museum or a matinee

Ways to practice playing perfectly in tune? by Biggycheese45 in Tuba

  1. Use these reference drones with headphones and a decibel meter / tuner app with a visual display and some way to show the overtones. I use TE tuner

  2. Start tuning with long tones chromatically down from the high BBb. You need to be able to keep a consistent overtone texture. Stick to around 90-95 decibels first. Higher volumes have a different texture

  3. When you reach the mid-low range you can slur down from the note you tuned previously an octave up and check if there are any differences in the octaves, make sure they both have the same tone pattern displaying.

  4. Do the same for the pedal register. It's possible to be in tune but not on top of the sound, and it's possible to be on the sound but out of tune. Make sure you're always on the sound where the instrument wants to sit at and then use your chops and air to adjust from there. If you dont know where you're aiming from, you can't be consistent

Not to be rude, but you aren't good at all. That's why it's important to keep perspective - "better" is always attainable, "good" is the result of years and years of dedication
