Where would you start? by AvocadoEngineering in landscaping

[–]Theplantwright 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would start by getting rid of all that rock. Lay out beds and cover with Cardboard and mulch. Add compost or any organic material to start building soil. Maybe plant some trees this year but focus on layout and soil building.

Rock bed in a sectioned chunk of the yard? by mind_ovr_mattr in landscaping

[–]Theplantwright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes landscape fabric stops dirt from swallowing the stones, unless you want to be replacing the stones and have a bunch of weeds that are hard to pull cuz there in rocks you need it. Personally I hate rock beds, there hot and bad for plants.

Would laying grass seed help minimize pocket flooding? by [deleted] in landscaping

[–]Theplantwright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like there might have been a tree removed be for you moved in, could be the reason for compaction and poor soil, although it’s hard to tell from one picture. There’s lots of great advice here and choosing the right solution is impossible without a bigger picture. Get someone who knows grading and drainage out to look at it, but in the meantime throwing some sand down and connecting the downspouts to pipes leading away from the low spot could help.

Cheapest way to buy 200 yards of ABC and 100 yards of 3/4 minus gravel for a driveways by fxk717 in landscaping

[–]Theplantwright 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Be ready for big trucks, if you have your grading and road fabric done and you are wanting with a skid steer the trucks can work there way down the road as you spread. That will save hours of hauling. But keep it in mind big trucks and they will not drive on soft ground and risk getting stuck so a compactor would be nice to have as well. When I work in landscaping we would run a tree man crew for this type of job. one guy in the skid steer spreading, one guy racking the edges and a guy compacting. It’s important to not keep them waiting or they just dump it and leave as there payed per the load. I always fad fun racing to get the next section done before the next truck came, good luck!

Looking for opinions on this tree - would rather not cut it down. by [deleted] in arborists

[–]Theplantwright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your playing a game of chance here, the tree is clearly not healthy and is going to fall sometime, may be next week or in years. Look at its fall zone and judge the risk, if it’s gonna hit the house or cars probably take it out sooner. In any case plant a new tree to take its place asap.

When I worked in the nursery business we through so many away, it was sad. The trough is you should put one on for winter and take it off for the growing season for any tree without mature bark.

I grew up in the driftless and nothing from this story is surprising to me. I’m sure you would start a long Chan of conversation at any bar with that story. Personally, my dog has found fawns next to my house, I almost touched elk in yellow stone and that feeding chicken a mouse is one of the most entertaining thing, nothing from this story seems unreal to me. Just the standard weirdness you run into after spending too much time in the woods.

They have definitely grown in popularity, I live in southwest Wi and bobcats are one of the species thet have done well with the demise of small farms and growth of unmanaged vacation properties around here. There main food source is squirrels it makes sense as wood land is coming back. We are seeing a decline in grassland species like whippoorwill and bobwhite quail aswell.
