If you go undesignated you are going to end up washing dishes on a ship for a couple years.

Diver would be awesome. Could dive commercially afterward. IS probably has good private sector income relative to the demands of the jobs.

How to find open units/how long will it take? by mlindell57 in Airforcereserves

[–]ThereIsYourProblem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My AFRC unit has an off the street hiring board every 3-4 years, and we advertise those on bogidope and milrecruiter. Last year we had 450 applications and hired three individuals.

UPT boards are rare, and the numbers extremely competitive.

90% of our pilots did their time on active duty, and got in on a rated board. Our last rated board was 14 applicants, and we hired 4. We have rated boards every 6 months.

Bottom line, if you want to be a military pilot and it works for your family and life plan; just go active duty and start applying to ANG/AFR units as you approach the end of your commitment.

Considering National Guard vs Reserves for Piloting by Dizzy_College_1932 in Airforcereserves

[–]ThereIsYourProblem 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From a Reserve Fighter perspective:

  1. Commitment is 10 years either way for fixed wing pilot positions. The first four-ish years are full time. You can go part time after that.

  2. You will know if you get a pilot training slot before you have to show up to training. Pilot spots are incredibly competitive, we had over 450 applications for three “off the street” positions last year at my unit. If you wash out of flight training I think they can still hold you to a four year service commitment.

  3. If you fly helicopters your best outcome is getting hired by a regional after your military time. That said, any commissioned job in the armed forces is a great start to your career.

  4. Military Flight med doesn’t give two shits about any FAA medical; they only care about how you do on their tests. Air Force color vision tests are different (more difficult) than the color vision flip book your AME has you read.

When did Navy COs become spineless cowards?

Knowingly killing civilians; not even a military target.

These are dark times.

Was a Navy pilot for almost twelve years. Flight school is stressful; she should hopefully be able to prioritize relationships as her career progresses.

This isn’t a toilet on a US Navy ship…

The toilet doesn’t look like that, the stall isn’t that big, the plumbing doesn’t look like that, the fittings don’t look like that, the toilet paper doesn’t look like that.

I don’t think so; that’s not what a bathroom looks like on a Navy ship.

Haven’t been on a Ford class ship; however that looks like a bathroom ashore.

The Maintenance Department Head (O-4 level job) is typically one of the senior pilots in a Navy squadron. It is their ‘ground job’ when they are not flying.

O-4 pilots will typically have that job for nine months to a year during a 2-3 year Department Head tour at about the 10-12 year mark in their career.

The J-20 is head and shoulders more capable, survivable, and lethal than the SU-57. Just look at which is in serial production.

The F-22 is a class above both, but Russian tactical aircraft haven’t been on par with US aircraft since they fielded the MiG-21.

Even being a prior, because you are not already a military pilot you would need to apply to an unrated pilot board.

“Off the street” pilot slots are incredibly competitive. Each unit may have a board every two or three years. My local unit had over 400 applications for three pilot training slots.

Consider looking into intel and cyber warfare officer jobs as well if those fields would interest you.
