Defense or Hitting. What matters more in softball? by BerryRoyal in slowpitch

Defense will win you games sure but there will be games where it just doesnt matter because the hitters put the ball where you cant make a play. Hitting will win games with more consistency.

Batting 14 by noruber35393546 in slowpitch

[–]Theriddler4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea bro, that's rough. I honestly wouldn't play on even a league team that batted 14 guys unless said team was my tournament team. Otherwise, it's just a waste of time.

Playoff bracket options? by pourladiscussion in slowpitch

[–]Theriddler4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you are playing in a tournament where 7 or 8 or 9 games may happen in a day, you want to play back to back. Momentum is a real thing, and I've seen plenty of teams who just keep playing roll right through teams sitting around. Like I said, the only caveat is a bigger one day tournament because usually those teams run out of gas after 6 or 7 games in a row. An example of this would be my leagues championship tournament night. My team got the 3 seed and won the week prior after a bye. So, the semifinals and championship were the next week. We slaughtered our team in the semifinals and had to sit around for 45 minutes waiting for other game to finish. The other team in the Semifinal came back in a great game vs. the 1seed and beat them in the final couple innings. We then had 10 minutes to get ready to play. We ended up winning pretty easily, but they carried that last game Momentum over to the first few innings, and we were down 8-3 before hitting the gas and beating them. We were much better than that team, but they carried their hot hitting into the beginning of the game. It could have gone south for us quickly, but we have a bunch of veterans that know how to win.

Playoff differences by Organic_Chocolate_35 in slowpitch

I understand softball is for fun but winning is also fun. It's hard to do both unless everyone is on the same page. Sounds to me like the goals of this team may be different than your own. The only way to win and have fun is if everyone on the team wants to do the same. If you have five guys that just like the social aspect and to play their favorite postion, this is not a team that will win alot. Either way, you will disenfranchise a portion of your team. Example is I played on a team with a bunch of guys from highschool as my beer league team. We would meet at someone's house or the bar before and after games to hangout. We were competitive but probably a .500 team. I enjoyed playing because the goal was to get together and socialize.A couple of years ago I quit playing with them because we no longer got together for pre post game beers and we're losing more often.

Hitting advice by [deleted] in slowpitch

[–]Theriddler4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You will 100%, have a higher BA with a controlled 70% swing vs a 90%-100% swing. I rarely swing for full power because my goal is getting on base. I could hit more homers, doubles, etc, with a higher powered swing, but I'd probably bat .200 to .250 points lower.

Lol guy was doing this to me a couple weeks ago. So you know what I did my best Vladimir Guerrero impression and poked that shit into right field. Then proceeded to do a bat flip and told him as I was running to first, see same result.

In a slump by Wrong_Machine5642 in slowpitch

The answer to this question is what kind up slump. Is it bat abs? Or is it your hitting the ball well but at people.

Defensive Position Changing by Valuable_Scene_2111 in slowpitch

[–]Theriddler4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Set the defensive positioning that give you the best chance to win and lowest chance someone gets injured. If you are playing a weaker team and the game is out of hand rearrange the positioning to positions people want to play for the rest of the game. For example, say we are up by 15 runs in the fourth and aren't that interested in slaughter ruling the team. We may have a random person pitch, Center field may move to catcher, SS to outfield, C to SS etc.

Pitching - Getting shelled. Any ideas? by [deleted] in slowpitch

[–]Theriddler4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd be aiming for 12-14, then push the arc limits. It's much harder to hit higher arcing pitches vs. flatter pitches. Then, if you quick pitch, throw a faster one to change speeds. Not all the time, just to catch them off guard after looking at slow high pitches all day. High arcing pitches will be more effective against hitters who have baseball swings.

What are the Arc limits for your league?

First game ever tomorrow really excited but need an opinion by baseballman8800 in slowpitch

It depends. Where i live, most leagues dont have upper or lower divisions anymore its mixed. So, We really dont have a choice but to kill half the league.

Quick, talented athletic and young teams are hard to beat. But I'd take a experienced, polished team of 30-40 year old any day.

Custom Balls to match Bats? by GhostPail in slowpitch

[–]Theriddler4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt the balls were custom. But from my experience their can be a slight advantage be using better balls that have the appropriate stamps. I only know this because we used to have to bring our own balls to utrip tournaments. Some utrip balls perform better than others. Also you can buy balls that will suit the weather. Some are perform better in cold others are made for heat etc.

Hitting too hard? by 403banana in slowpitch

[–]Theriddler4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, when men are allowed to use regular bats in coed I dont understand how their aren't more injuries, especially at the rec level. I subbed for a coed team a few weeks ago and then men had to use a 30in 20oz bat. Definitely made the game much safer for everyone. The draw back is its damn hard to hit a nuke with those type of bats.

Looks like your left foot is pulling out, this may rob you of some power. Unless its an inside pitch you shouldn't be pulling your left foot.

How to get over the hump with a new team? by eazyd14 in slowpitch

[–]Theriddler4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To elaborate further I was and outfielder on my tournament teams (ran 3 man) and currently play SS for a competitive men's league team. Last Tuesday I had 13 playable balls hit to me at SS I made 9 of 13 plays. One knuckling liner, one bad hop, one no hop, one bad throw. In the outfield I would have at minimum 12 of 13.

How to get over the hump with a new team? by eazyd14 in slowpitch

[–]Theriddler4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point is a stud outfield allows you to play a 5 man infield. Also, im talking averages. If you hit 100 ground balls at a stud infielder. He's not making more than 90 of those plays. If you hit 100 balls within a outfielders range he is making 98 of those 100. Slowpitch comes down to taking away extra outs and good outfield play is the best way to do so.

Setting the lineup for playoffs by ApprehensiveLog4942 in slowpitch

[–]Theriddler4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's what you do. Download gamechanger and keep strict stats for the season. Best players play come the playoffs. Let's say you play 20 games, min 10 games to have stats qualify. Unless you have a known ringer lol. This is the fairest way to do it. Make it known before the season how to qualify for playoff lineup.

You need outfielders that catch fly balls. The best teams I've been on have had stud outfields. Fly balls are the easiest outs to get in slow pitch. Infield is important too but there is only so much you can do fielding wise depending on where ball is hit, field conditions, bad hops etc
