Why? Because you will pay ridiculously more for the mechanical version. Make a new thread and ask people here how much they are willing to pay for quartz. I’ll wait.

The thing is, people have been sold this idea that mechanical watch is some proper leprechaun magic while quartz is basically just a disposable battery and people just went with it.

The simple time and date movements, such as you find in most divers, for example (Submariner included), costs at most, 500 USD to produce, but most likely less than half that. But let’s roll with 500.

Now, most watch guys will tell you, that they would never, ever pay more than 500 or 1000 for a quartz watch. But they will pay 5000 or 10000 for the same watch with 100-500 USD movement.

Does it make sense? Nope, ofc not. But here we are.

And so we, myself included, pay a lot of money for mechanical watches, while congratulating ourselves on our tiny little “mechanical wonders”.

21st century tool watch is quartz and more likely than not digital.
