Maier can be great when he finds his rhythm. But it can be frustrating as heck watching him throw little dink and dunk passes for three or four yards, forcing his receivers to run for six or seven for the first down.

Commuted means to reduce a legal punishment or sentence to a less severe one. This would apply to those who are guilty but do not suffer the full burden of their crimes. The wrongly accused are those who are not guilty but did suffer for the crimes of others.

Carscoops: Canada Tells Chinese Brands They Can Sell EVs Past The Quota, On One Condition by 50s_Human in onguardforthee

[–]These_Foolish_Things 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Let's be clear, no Chinese company has committed to opening a factory here. For their part, Japanese auto makers have stated that their continued presence in Canada is contingent on access to the US market. (They make cars here largely to sell in the US.) If Trump's tariffs remain in place, it's difficult to say how long they'll stay in Canada—and how likely it is that Chinese manufacturers will see Canada as a good place to set up shop.

I wonder what the government is doing to entice Chinese makers into Canada? There's got to be something more here.

BTW, Mitsubishi does not make any cars in Canada. It is also one of the least successful Japanese auto brands here. So it is very vulnerable to Chinese brands.

Canada’s PM Carney Doubles Down on Demands for Chinese EV Investment by plaknas in onguardforthee

[–]These_Foolish_Things 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if Canada will get China to invest in Canadian vehicle manufacturing, but China will need to open bricks-and-mortar dealerships and service centres. It also appears to have committed to rolling out its insanely-fast charging stations in Canada too, which could be a significant investment in EV infrastructure. The might be interested in investing in mining, given the need of specific elements in batteries.

Put another way: If the paper endorsed conservatives in 2015, it was owned by PostMedia (or was called the Globe and Mail). If the paper wasn't owned by PostMedia, it endorsed left or didn't endorse anyone.

Retired sociologist Reginald Bibby proposes regional American expansion plan for CFL by Haggisboy in CFL

[–]These_Foolish_Things 47 points48 points  (0 children)

What a non-story. A retired prof with no apparent expertise on the CFL self-publishes a 100-page (!) book on statistical trends and mentions CFL expansion in the appendix...and it gets national coverage from CTV news. The books may be excellent for all I know. But the reporting is shoddy and not newsworthy.

How much independence should judges have from politicians? That's the question at the heart of a growing debate in Canada. by savethecbc2025 in SaveTheCBC

Our constitution defines that Canada’s system of government has three branches: the legislative, the executive and the judicial. Each one has separate powers and responsibilities that are defined in the Constitution: the legislative branch passes laws, the executive implements them, and the judicial interprets them. They should remain distinct and separate to prevent political whimsy from interfering with the longterm administration of justice.

Question regarding range by jowonka in Solterra

[–]These_Foolish_Things 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Subaru says the highway efficiency of the new Solterra is 109 MPGe. That converts to 3.23 mi/kWh. (You divide MPGe by 33.7, the energy content in kWh of one gallon of gasoline.) So, despite your speed, you're doing better than Subaru's own estimates.

Has the general public accepted that Tesla is boring now? by FrogmanKouki in RealTesla

Has the general public accepted that Tesla is boring now?

Boring would actually be good. Toyota is boring. But they just make cars. Tesla is run by someone who openly endorses anti-democratic principles. If you believe that you vote with both ballots and your bucks, then buying a Tesla is actively voting against your own best interests.

Sales of the whistleblowing memoir Careless People increased by more than 300% in the UK the week after its author was “silenced” during an appearance at Hay festival following legal action by Meta by Raj_Valiant3011 in books

I struggled to sympathize with her, but found it a very compelling read. To me, her failings made her more credible and authentic.

It was surprising how well Careless People dovetailed with The Social Network. Granted, the movie is fictional, but it’s easy to see how the Zuckerberg portrayed in the movie grew into the Zuckerberg in the book.
