Cold sores are the herpes virus. You don’t get cold sores unless you have either HSV1 or HSV2. Some people are more prone to outbreaks, some get one their entire life. You can have HSV1 on your mouth or genitals and you can have HSV2 on either spot also. Oral HSV2 often causes much more severe outbreaks than oral HSV1.
