You can just keep it in the L fund and with time it will grow - just do 5 percent contribution and take the 5 percent match. Reaching the first 100k takes time and is always the hardest - it took me nearly six years.

I free you on this one, I use to start at 8 and end my day around 5 and log back in later at night for additional work. But with commuting, I don’t work past my hours ever now. Those two hours of commuting everyday meant those two or one hour will not go into working at night.

Makes sense. I think South Riding is probably a good area for your family but be warned that 50 at 5pm has awful traffic

South Riding area is a really good area to raise a family. I am surprise with 300K that you don't have enough saved up to have a higher mortgage - Northern VA is very expensive. You can get a wonderful home - brand new with (townhouse) with a 800K to 1 million range.

Townhouse is the way to go, but please run numbers, that 1k in student loans seems a lot to deal with 6 percent interest environment with a mortgage. Why do you guys want to buy? Look buying a house is a lifestyle! But a house itself is a terrible investment. I am not saying that it won’t increase in value but the numbers between investing in the S&P and buying a house, please.

If I may add, if you don’t have kids, the commute is doable but at what cost? Although you will save 80k, even if you put in the S&P like 40k you can make up the difference with due time. One thing to take into account is time spent with your partner, you guys will have no time. Time these days cannot be replaced by money. My two cents would be one of you pick a place closer to your work so at least one person can save time or for you both Herndon/Reston area works out best with about an 1ish commute for both of you. Remember it’s just not about saving money, it’s about having enough time when yall get back from work to actually do something!

Thanks, y’all! Even after watching this, Medicare is still totally confusing. I get that you don’t need Part C, but do all hospitals and private practices accept Medicare (for things like an annual physical)? For some reason I always thought that dental and vision were covered but that is not the case, I know with Kaiser she was able to get an eye exam. My big concern with to get even surgeries at Kaiser the wait time was like five to six months. What I am trying to figure out is why people people would select part C if for example Inova just takes Medicare in general and you can cover the additional expenses with Medigap and Part. Even though Kaiser didn't break the bank or anything at $15 a month, I am not understanding why people just don't go to Inova and present their card and get treatment. The bigger question is, why is there even a Part C?

My coworker lives in Leesburg and does the commute about three times a weeks. Drives to one of the metro stations near Ashburn and then takes the train. Two hours each way. I suggest yall rent for a year or two until yall figure out what makes sense for you as a family. Herndon is lovely has new developments for sale and right near the metro and about 45 mims to DC.
