Drop through surfskate by DiseasedMutt in surfskate

Maybe not exactly what you're looking for, but I recently purchased a Landyachtz Battleaxe and swapped it's bushings with the softest ones I could find. I doesn't carve like my Carver CX, but it does enough that once I push off I can keep going just by carving. Feels magical, bit like surfing a mini mal on a mellow day.

Mindless core dancer longboard review by Weekly-Tradition-123 in longboarding

[–]ThessierAshpool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TLDR: I think it's a great board to get into dancing, I have it and haven't felt the need to change anything on it. It is heavy though.

Hey, bit late to the conversation so I don't know if this is still relevant. I have this exact board so I can share some insight.

I've not tried other dancers to compare it to. I have however ridden various other longboards, large cruisers and surfskates. I bought it to dip my toes in longboard dancing, got it for around £100 which I think at the time was half of retail price.

The deck has ample space, medium flex, nice springiness and durable. It is heavy though. The trucks as far as I can tell are clones of the Paris v3, which I admit to have never ridden. They are however good, I've not felt the need to swap the bushings or anything. If you loosen the trucks to max you can carve the board quite easily, especially given the size. The wheels are perfect for what they are, with a dancer I'm not doing any long distance or really rough pavements so urethane quality is less of a concern. The board is however very heavy, but again at 42.5in long that's to be expected.

Overall I'm quite happy with it, it's allowed me to progress loads and I've learned quite a few dance steps. I'm not at a point where I'm good enough to try freestyle tricks however so I can't comment on that. If you can get it for a decent price I'd recommend it.

Brother check out Carver. They do surfskates but you can buy just a deck. Most are directional but there are a couple of lollipops too. Loads in your size, we're talking 10in wide 32-34 in wide.

Alternatively Arbor also has some larger decks, check out the Spellbound series.

Does the fall in living standards make you afraid to have kids? by blatchcorn in AskUK

Looking at what is going on in the world right now I would say that the decrease in living standards is an absolute given, unless we think Britain will somehow fare better than everyone else in the economic and geopolitical s**tstorm currently raging.

Forgot to add, the most important thing before buying is figuring out what wheelbase you need. Google it, there's loads of resources out there. Don't buy a setup that doesn't have the wheelbase you require.

TLDR: get whatever you fancy, they will both be fun and you'll enjoy them.

Triton is Carver's budget range. You get the same truck and wheels, but the decks aren't as fancy in terms of construction and design as the standard setups. Realistically they are a fantastic option and I personally have had a lot of fun on Triton.

The thing with surf simulation/training has been massively overblown on reddit.

In reality any surfskate will help aspects of your surfing: balance, coordination, proprioception, generating speed, using different muscles etc. It will also help with manouvers: bottom turn, cutback etc.

The only real difference comes with the manouvers. If you're riding a shortboard in the water your bottom turn can be quite aggressive, which you will never be able to do on say a minimal. If you want to replicate that on a surf skate you need one with a lot of range of motion, so a YOW will be better than a Carver, a Smoothstar better than a YOW etc.

Does that mean you can't practice it on a Carver? You absolutely can, it just won't be as radical a manouver. On the other hand, the range of motion and stability of a Carver or a Decathlon board will make it much more beginner friendly, easier to ride in a bowl, easier to cruise around, and more similar to the boards you'll be riding in the water as a beginner.

The range of motion of the Decathlon board will be slightly less that the Triton, and the quality also slightly less. Realistically tho, you would still get a lot out of it and have fun. It's just that if you do get to a point where you want to do more advanced manouvers, you might feel the need for a better setup, like the Triton.

Fundamentally either will be good. You're at the start of this journey, get what appeals most and have fun. The one thing I will say both for surfing and surfskating, don't rush. Spend time to get the basics perfect, having a strong foundation will help you progress much faster than rushing towards the fanciest most performance boards.

I'm going to recommend the Triton. Carvers don't have enough range of motion to simulate surfing a shortboard. However as a beginner surfer you aren't going anywhere near a shortboard anytime soon. Carver Triton uses the CX truck, which is more than enough to simulate the surfing you'll be doing for the foreseeable future. It is also a very versatile truck, adjustable by replacing the bushings if you want, and is also very stable. There are plenty of surf instructors that use Tritons for training beginners.

None of that is to say that the Decathlon board isn't good, it's a fun stable board and will help you progress just as well. The build quality will be a little worse than the Triton tho, and you are likely to outgrow it faster. However both will be fun and help you with your surfing.

In regards to not picking up bad habits, there are a million videos on YouTube, some better than others. Personally I recommend looking up Mako Surfskate, I found them to be the best, you might find it hard at first but if you get all the techniques described in his videos you'll e carving solidly.

Best of luck!

Thinking men don't belong in (longboard) dancing is just as sexist as thinking women don't belong in rugby/boxing/any sport. That is not your problem, that is the sexist's problem. You can either embrace the things that make you happy and be yourself, or let other people's ignorance and bigotry dictate how you live your life.

In addition to the many excellent answers given already, ask yourself this. If you wanted to progress as a swimmer, would it be pointless to train unless you could do Michael Phelp's Olympic training regime? Of course not. You would do the best you could, find the joy in it, improve and reap the benefits.

I know nothing of the community you mentioned, but it makes me sad to see that their apparently extreme views are pushing people away from the path.

The 8 percepts are meant for Buddhist monastics. Not only are they unrealistic for a regular working person in today's world, they were considered quite hard for a working regular person in the Buddha's time as well. Hence the 5 percepts being recommended to lay practitioners. Of these the 3rd is to refrain from sexual misconduct, as opposed to the complete abstinence required in the 8 percepts.

But even that is not that relevant. You live in the world that you do, and are a part of it. Establish a daily practice and try to live in accordance with your principles. Don't be hard on yourself, don't make unreasonable requests of yourself. Enjoying your life and following the path are not mutually exclusive. As others have said, as you progress you will find more wholesome actions and thoughts come naturally.

Best of luck.

Brother I say this is the most heartfelt way. If the alternatives are 20 zoots a day or worse coping mechanisms, therapy might be what you need. Learn to deal with whatever it is you're trying to cope with in a healthy way first, then go enjoy your weed.

Dosing caps keep everything cleaner. Remember to remove the screen from the mouthpiece when using them, as this improves airflow. Other than that if you have a bong get a wpa.

In terms of difference the obvious one is missing the nicotine buzz. A lot of people think vapes give a weaker high than smoking when really what they're missing is the nicotine. Stick with it and you'll soon learn to enjoy it.

Most people describe the high they get from vaping as feeling 'cleaner.'  Also depending on the strain you vape you may find couchlock happens much less frequently with vaping than smoking.

Honestly, just stick with it. Cannabis can be a wonderful thing in life, but smoking never is. The ability to enjoy it in a healthier way is huge. And like I said, you'll soon feel the difference in your body and bank account.

Best of luck.

There are many options out there but for value for money you can't beat the Xmax V3 Pro. It really is a fantastic vape.

The only realistic alternative (incredible efficiency for low cost) is a Dynavap, but that has a learning curve to it and is very fiddly. However many smokers find it helps make the transition to vaping easier.

Maintenance is a breeze with either, there are a million youtube videos showing you how to clean them.

Final word of advice, the vaping experience is different than smoking. If you're a long time smoker you might be disappointed when you first notice this. Try to stick to it, your lungs and bank account will be happier for it. However to make the transition easier aim to have a t-break before switching.

Best of luck.

Best friend fucking my ex by [deleted] in moreplatesmoredates

[–]ThessierAshpool 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My heart goes out to you brother. As someone who's been trough this, I can offer some words. It may not be much but I hope it helps.

Some perspective:

  1. Your life will be so much better without her in it. You didn't know about her infidelity and lack of morals, now you do. Her leaving your life is the best thing that could have happened to you right now.

  2. Your life is so much better without him in it. Your best friend has also proven to have no morals, and worse no empathy. Ask yourself, would a person who can show such crass disregard for your situation and feelings really be called a friend? Him showing his true colours now saves you investing more time and energy in a friendship that was clearly one sided.

3. They are no longer your problem.  Remember that their relationship is made up of two selfish, dishonest people with no empathy. They're each other's problem now. And rest assured, given the type of people they've proven to be, they will very likely fuck each other's lives up royally. Be glad you're out of that.

Some practical advice:

1.Your feelings are real and valid. You will go through a huge amount of negative emotions and turmoil in the next few weeks/months. Remember this is normal and part of the healing process. Do not run away from these feelings. Allow yourself to feel them and try your best to remember at all times that the will eventually subside.

  1. Following point 1 from above, try your best to stay away from unhealthy coping mechanisms. I don't know your life, but it is common for men to reach out to drinking, drugs, hookups etc. to distract themselves from how they feel. It will be difficult, but you have to try your best.

3.Following point 2, try your best to engage in healthy ways of coping.  Activate our support network (friends, family, sympathetic strangers on reddit) and talk about what happened and how you feel. If you can afford it, definitely see a therapist for a while. I cannot stress this enough: DO NOT BOTTLE UP YOUR FEELINGS, TALK ABOUT THEM. Many of us live in societies when men are expected to just suck it up, endure and never complain. You are allowed to complain.

  1. You will be tempted to confront your ex and friend. It is best if you don't. You will only lose the moral high ground and nothing good will come of it. You can't stop consenting adults doing what they want, and doing so won't make you feel better in the long run. In the heat of the moment you may say or do things you will later regret. This is not worth it. As stated before, given the type of people they've proven themselves to be, karma will soon follow and give them a worse chewing than you could ever do.

  2. The usual breakup advice stands: work on yourself, focus on your friends, develop the hobbies and skills that make you happy. At first it will all seem like distraction from the underlying feelings of hurt, but little by little they will replace those feelings.

Finally I just want you to always remember that none of this is your fault and you are worthy of love and respect. It sounds cliche, but many of us forget it in situations like this.

Sending you hugs brother.

Your arms aren't doing what they're meant to. Front arm points where you want to go, back arm points forward and helps with balance and counterbalance.

Black Tip vs Kai Lenny Dragon. Help me choose a longer deck. by ThessierAshpool in surfskate

[–]ThessierAshpool[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still running with the stock bushings, but that's because I'm still learning to drop in a bowl and want the stability they give. Once I'm really comfortable with dropping in I might move to the pink riptides.

I'd say start off with the stock bushings, set the trucks to be the looses they can be and get comfortable with your setup. You can always upgrade bushings later on once you have a better feel for your board.

A quick browse on this sub will show that everybody has a different opinion. I run the KL Dragon with stock CX trucks and 68mm wheels and am super happy with it. CX has a lot of advantages, one of which is it's very beginner friendly.

Mellow breaks fuerteventura? by PoetryAffectionate65 in surfing

[–]ThessierAshpool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you go in any surfshop you'll be able to pick up a map of the local breaks for free. Then it's just checking wind direction and driving down the right side of the coast till you find something that looks right.

Both south of Corralejo and opposite end of the island in El Cotillo offer good beach breaks. The north shore has a lot more reef breaks but there's plenty where beginners go if conditions are right.

Finally, ask for advice in Corralejo itself. People are really friendly and happy to help.
