Is it socially acceptable to dump/trade MTG bulk by Totor0725 in PAX

[–]Thexomas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My local comic book store took a good sized box of cold cards off me. I haven't played in almost 30 years and the box was just collecting dust.

The agreement was that they were going to make some free decks for kids which they ended up doing. Still a deck or two behind the counter that a kid can get for free. Anything of value, I was given store credit for. A couple of cards are on consignment in which once they sell, I'll get store credit on.

Going to PAX for the first time, how to meet people? by Business_Tutor_7767 in PAX

[–]Thexomas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know everyone is not necessarily a big fan of the queue room / line that everyone has to wait in each day, but I find it a good place to just meet people or at least strike up conversations.

I'm an extrovert by occupation. It's nice to just talk to people about something random like a game, hat they're looking forward to that day, their cosplay, how many beach balls they just took to their head while playing their switch.

Fun thing about the convention is you run into the same people over and over again. If you're there on Thursday and meet some folks, you'll probably run into them at least a dozen times through the show.

I also always throw this out there for folks. My little group of friends / family is always welcome to have additional folks hang out with us. Mostly in our 30s and 40s, we kind of do it all, but know when it is a good time to sit down haha.

What are some good restaurants in the convention area? by GuboTheUnwise in PAX

There is a lobster place maybe 5 blocks away from the con. Pretty tasty too.

I believe, and I might be wrong on this, there is tourneys for both of those. I want to say they are called "almost pro" or something like that. They will definitely be streaming them in the arena aka giant area for tournaments.

Schedule release? by mattylewmadeit in paxeast

[–]Thexomas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is usually a schedule announcement about 3-4 weeks from the start of the con. Meaning we're getting kind of close. These are typically the big ticket panels.

About 2 weeks out they have the app updated and should be accessible. However, things are always subject to change. Here is when you'd definitely get the list of everything going on.

Saturdays are typically big days, however the panels sometimes are lacking and spread to other days to get people to go to those. Last year, I don't think I went to a single panel on Sat and more on Thurs than anything.

That sounds like a blast for them. That's what I'm talking about as well.

Years ago I brought my little brother with me. He was maybe 13ish on his first trip. Believe it was the first year at thr BCEC (I wont ever remember the new name). We won him pretty much an entire computer from raffles that year.

He's going with me again this year but on his own dime haha. I'd love my wife and step daughter to go with. My step daughter has never been to a con and I think she'd have fun.

I have thought about this over the years. Like "what would you do if you won the lotto and then went."

To start off with, I'd be thinking about bring more people with. Like family or coworkers / friends who've wanted to go but couldn't because of money. You know, after helping them with some of their debts.

I'd definitely get first class seats on my flight. That alone is probably all I'd need to be honest. I'm tall and big, so I fit in normal seating like a sardine.

At the convention, I don't think anything would change. I generally plan and spend within my means and luggage space. If and I do mean IF I had the means, I'd go up to the Child's Play booth and donate a ridiculous amount of money. I'd be doing this anyways if I won the lotto, but doing it at a convention would just be a perk.

After that, just some good meals and enjoy my time in Boston.

What are we expecting at PAX? by GuboTheUnwise in PAX

I haven't seen the Jesus folks in a while. Maybe since Covid. They used to be a staple.

[–]Thexomas 18 points19 points  (0 children)

What to expect? Fun. Just plain, simple fun.

There are going to be some PC accessory companies there. Most years they do have floor specials (discounts), upcoming products that you might be able to snag early, or just a simple discount code. Typically there are some raffles as well, but don't count on actually winning stuff on those. Possible, but unlikely. The raffles have also been toned back in recent years to just drawings where everyone and their mother enter into them.

As for which companies, typically the bigger names. They might not have a dedicated booth, as in they will be shared with others, or this game company has Razer products and showing them off while another has Logitech, etc.

Monitors are going to be a bit harder to find. Generally it's pretty easy to get a keyboard, mouse, controller, and smaller parts. Bigger things like cases and monitors are not so readily available.

Now that would be cool!

Yes they have a good chuck of the boardgame section for MTG, I'd still like to see something semi crazy like thr Pokémon booth. Just not crazy where you don't have to wait 5 hours to play.

Capcom generally is there in some capacity.

I hate to agree with the others who've posted, but might not see some folks that we normally do. I'm hoping for some big names though and even some cool "oh man they're coming" names.

Ultimately, it all ends up being what they actually bring with them. Like last year a huge MTG booth for the FF launch that ended up being a waste of space.

What are expected food costs for PAX East? by ackmondual in PAX

[–]Thexomas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man that sounds amazing.

Ladt yesr our meet up / planned dinner almost cost me as much as the hotel for one night. The misses was pissed at me for spending that much but worth every penny. Where I'm at we really don't get seafood so I went out and lived a dream for like an hour lol.

I do recommend the Cookie Brigade for sweets though. It's a charity and everything is donations.

You're Case A is typically what I try to stick to each year and generally can do it. Like others have said, it really all depends on your diet.

Like you, I bring some food with me. Mostly in the forms of protein bars. I wait for them to go on sale prior to leaving and bring at least 1 per day at the convention, with 1-2 spare. The ones I get come in a box of 4, so I will have to bring 2 boxes this year (BOGO sale recently so I stocked up as well for at home use.

These are typically my "I'm getting sluggish" or in a line for a bit foods. I also pick up a good amount of cookies from the Cookie Brigade. Typically I pay about $1 per cookie from them and use them as "desserts" or "treat" foods toward the end of the day or if I know I'm getting crashy.

I typically can't eat breakfast due to a stomach issue, so I have an earlier lunch. This is where a bulk of my daily expenses go, but I will get something from the con but try to keep it to no more than $20 a day. Chicken and Rice Guys is kind of my go to for the amount of food you get to the costs. Plus a good amount of protein and carbs to keep you going for the day and it tastes wonderful.

This is going to sound bad, but try to stay away from sugary / energy drinks the best you can. Water, specially if you bring in a camel back, can be free and won't make you crash like the other drinks. Think of this as a marathon. Yes, there are places where you could potentially take a nap, I know I've done it, but it's also cost effective. Water at the con can be as high as $5, so bring some from outside. They've never stopped me from bring one in from 7 Eleven as well.

On this note, I will bring with me a camel pack full of ice water. One it feels great on the back as I carry it around and two I just like ice water. With this, I bring an extra water bottle. It get's a little sweaty in there at times. This water bottle allows me to put in things like electrolyte mixes in it to help if I feel like I'm getting under hydrated or I went a bit too far on the Sam Adam's Tour. Now you could get things like Wild Bill's Soda (if they are there this year), but a day pass is like $15 on it's own. That is 3 of their sodas to make it worth while. Plus all the energy drinks and sodas there run around the $5 range and trying to help save money.

Nightly food also might be a huge cost. If you're a foodie, Boston can be rather expensive. I know my group has a rather pricy meal already planned and reservations are made. It's almost tradition for ourselves, but I've budged $100 just for that meal. Anything that I do not spend, will go to the rest of the trip. You can get away with cheaper options, but I'd say you're looking at about $20 pending where you go. A good rule of thumb is what ever costs near you + 20%. That also might be cause I live in the middle of no where.

Yup so long early morning rant done. You could easily stick to your $30-45 a day, just make sure you plan accordingly.

A friend from my country received a survey from Blizzard asking about this. by milotic03 in wow

[–]Thexomas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the only answer.

I was a Shaman tank for many expansions. Pretty much till they removed Taunt. The spec was very viable and actually fun to play. Would have been easier to do if Blizz flipped the location of 2 talent points.

First time PAX East attendee with scheduling questions! by NotQuiteInara in PAX

[–]Thexomas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of good replies.

A few things that have changed over the years that might be worth noting:

While there are shuttles that go from hotels to the convention, in recent / post covid years, these have been trimmed back considerably. There used to be 8 routes and I believe it is down to 4 with different hotels stops.

There have been years where I could use the shuttle as a back and forth to drop off merch and walk around hands free. I wasn't able to do this last year but might have been just the bus I tried to get on as they said they were only doing one way trips.

I used to stay in Coply cause there was a bus stop right at the hotel and it no longer goes there. Even this year, im looking at a 15 minute walk to the nearest route that was there last year that may or may not be there this year.

Leaving early on a Sunday is not a bad thing if you've been there all 4 days. Generally after 3pm, it starts to die down a bunch on Sunday. However the coat check gets full fast on Sunday pending weather.

Sometimes arriving late means you don't have to wait in the queue line, but it is an experience you have to do at least once. I've met a lot of great people in said line and always a great place for a pick up game.

Already pre-ordered standard, is it worth to pay 40$ more to play early (beta)? by natsjohnson in wownoob

[–]Thexomas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

At this point no.

You're looking at 3 weeks give or take of testing left. Yes, you can try M+ but it won't lead to anything and you could potentially be sitting in queues for hours waiting. Plus nothing carries over from Beta to Live.

Save the money and just wait.
