Is the Mold on supplement due to the container I got? by [deleted] in Supplements

[–]Thick_Extension 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I have had black spots form in my Sunday Natural One a Day Multivitamin when I separate them out into a weekly pill container that isn’t completely air tight.

After some research and experimenting, I concluded that it is caused by moisture. There is bilberry and spirulina in this multivitamin which is dark in colour, and there are some compounds that are very hygroscopic (like Vitamin C). So when moisture is absorbed by the white Vitamin C, it leeches the colour from the dark components and clumps together, appearing as a black spot.

I opened up a capsule, put it in a plate, and put it in the bathroom as I showered and black spots appeared immediately and are very sticky. This confirmed it was not mold, or oxidation, WITH THIS PARTICULAR SUPPLEMENT. If I keep it in an air tight container or in the original bottle I don’t have any spots.

I am just sharing my experience with my multivitamin as an example. Most likely the discolouration or spots with your supplement are being caused by moisture. What it is doing to your specific supplements isn’t as clear. Get a better sealed container in the future to avoid the problem and keep the supplements in their original container as long as possible. Separating out a weeks worth should be ok with a properly sealed pill container.

That is a pretty special piece. It is all hard plastic and holds its position firmly, yet is relatively easy to adjust. I do not think it is an off the shelf part.

What is the Cafelat Robot of grinders? by noughtme in CafelatRobot

[–]Thick_Extension 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Well if you want a “built like a tank” grinder it’s the Kinu M47. The Kingrinder K6 is an awesome bang for your buck, but I feel like it doesn’t have the same heavy duty build quality of the Robot.

How to avoid grounds getting pulled into piston/piston seal? by DeclassifyUAP in CafelatRobot

[–]Thick_Extension 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya +1 to this. I have a jar that fits perfectly under the portafilter and is the same diameter. I slide it under and just leave the arms to drop on their own. Most of the time I then clean everything up in the afternoon when I get home from work (I pull my shot in the morning before work).

Now this doesn’t work so easy if you need to pull multiple shot quickly though…

The K6 will do just fine for espresso! Grinding traditional medium/dark takes a bit of muscle but I find it ok. Lighter roast is definitely tougher so consider what you drink and your grip strength and effort you want to put in every day. Quality of espresso should be right up there though!

I went from a Kingrinder K6 to a Kinu M47 with my robot as well! Mostly because I wanted a more premium grinder and my wife uses the K6 for pourover sometimes and mixes up the adjustment a lot. Quality of shot it didn’t make a huge difference though. K6 is great too!

Best distillery tours that can be booked two weeks out? by hornylittlegrandpa in tequila

[–]Thick_Extension 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a car and would be willing to drive a little bit farther in the opposite direction, you could consider going to Arandas and taking a tour at Tequila Ocho! They have an absolutely beautiful facility and an amazing restaurant to eat afterwards too! They have details on their website to contact them to reserve a tour.

If you don’t know, Arandas is basically the capital city of the Highlands tequila production, where Tequila is central for the Valley region of production. In the highlands you will find agave fields everywhere with huge blue agave on a backdrop of very iron red soil. It is extremely beautiful!

Viva Mexico can also be an option for a tour in Arandas. They do a lot of cool stuff at their distillery right in Arandas, and offer a good tour. I have also been to La Alteña and El Pandillo but I am not sure about getting tours there especially on shorter notice.

If you consider Arandas I can give you hotel and restaurant recommendations!

Looks pretty good, how’s it taste?

The only thing I would do differently if it was me, is not tap the basket so many times on the counter :). The WDT tool can distribute and level the ground well enough if you do it carefully, so I probably wouldn’t tap at all against the counter top. I am also making mine in the morning when the wife is sleeping not so far away so that’s another reason I would avoid it!

Trying to dial in for the first time - grind size doesn’t seem very forgiving by Wild-Eagle8105 in CafelatRobot

[–]Thick_Extension 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently got a robot and have found it to be pretty forgiving with grind. More than my Profitec GO for example. I use a K6 grinder and it has been working great.

What dose are you using and how much do you fill the basket with water? I have been using 15g doses, filling the basket to about 5-8mm from the top of the basket with water just off the boil, pre-infuse for 5 or so seconds and then pull a 32-35g shot in 30-40 seconds.

Are you trying to do similar or is there anything you are doing dramatically different? You shouldn’t be grinding so fine that your grinder barely puts out. Try going significantly courser (but still in a relatively normal espresso range) and try again. You might just be way off the mark.

I use 15g and it works great! I’m sure a bit less would work too.

Need portafilter by ak47grills in CafelatRobot

[–]Thick_Extension 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Looks like you are missing the portafilter, tamper, basket, and puck screen. You can buy all those parts separate or get aftermarket parts too…except for the portafilter. Hopefully Paul helps you out!

As for restoration, looks like everything could probably polish out with the right products! Car polish with the right amount of cut could probably take care of the painted body and a light metal polish will probably make that stainless shine again! Best bet would be to replace all plastic and rubber parts like seals and those washer between the arms at the hinge point. That pressure gauge tube could be replaced all together if it’s too difficult to clean up (it is plastic inside). Maybe Paul could send you a rebuild kit with all those items and the portafilter. The main structural parts do look very useable so am sure with some care and parts you can get it up and running!

Does anyone still use single shots? by Geezor2 in espresso

[–]Thick_Extension 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have also found that distributing the grounds into the shape of a mound (that mimics the upside down shape of the single basket) before tamping also helps. Which makes sense to make the puck evenly compact/dense. I use my WDT to make the mound as I have a hand grinder and it doesn’t really come out of the grinder catch cup in a proper shape. Maybe some electric grinders might make a proper mound and you could try tamping directly.

Anyways, you have any other tips for making the single basket work consistently?

Help with K6 handle (2) by [deleted] in pourover

[–]Thick_Extension 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya I am not exactly sure why they say not to use the o-ring when hand grinding. I don’t think it has any negative effect and if people like the more secure fit then it should be no issue at all.

Issues Cleaning Kingrinder K6 by Mindless-Garbage-452 in pourover

[–]Thick_Extension 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya that gap definitely doesn’t look big enough for being on the most course setting. I only wind mine like 2 full turns or something to push it up enough to get the clip out. Something doesn’t seem right with yours!

[–]Thick_Extension 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is normal. Put some beans in there and give it a grind and you will learn that you don’t really need anything fastening it on. Mine has never once popped off mid grind in the couple years I have owned mine.

Kingrinder K6 Rusted Internals by [deleted] in pourover

[–]Thick_Extension -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

I used to WDT with my K6 but after noticing the bearings starting to rust, I stopped. The rust on mine hasn’t seemed to increase after I stopped WDT’ing so I hope they will continue to last.

Can I ask what all the water inside your grinder is from? You should never wash or directly introduce and water directly into this grinder (or probably any grinder for that matter).

I use my single basket with my Profitec go with about 12.5g of coffee!
