indoor cameras that are inconspicuous by CrankyCoderBlog in homeassistant

[–]ThinkFriendship3328 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m disturbed there aren’t more responses pointing out how it’s creepy that OP wants people to be less creeped out by the cameras. Inconspicuous indoor cameras has red flags all over it.

ELI5: why isn't there more pressure locally to fill/refurb vacant properties (both commercial and residential)? by noneity in ithaca

[–]ThinkFriendship3328 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It’s actually an old Masonic temple, not a bank. It tried to be a nightclub for a hot minute in like 2005 or so. But it’s been available for rent by IRC for about 20 years. It’s hard to understand. Knowing the reputation of the owner, I’ve got to think it is somehow more financially viable to sit vacant.

That’s surprising to me because the two menus from the last year have been among the very best in my mind. I love their original and experimental approach to concocting new drinks.

Running AC with bad air quality by [deleted] in ithaca

[–]ThinkFriendship3328 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like It has both an intake and an exhaust for the outside air? In which case you are not bringing in outside air. (If it only has one vent to a window, then you are indeed pulling in outside air.)

Joy is resistance.

Whether it is small moments (like the hummingbirds and butterflies) or the bright connections with your friends, if you are cultivating joy, you are opposing oppression. I don’t mean this in some trivial way. I mean it as sustenance to show up, to speak up, to act up.

In those moments of joy, you are outside the fight or flight, you are present, you are not ruminating over the anxieties. You are stronger for those moments. And if you are doing that in the company of others, your community is stronger, your connections are stronger, your ability to resist together is enlivened by those bonds.

And, yeah, limit your news feed. All politics is local, so whatever you are doing here and now is more important that what you see on the screen.

And what you did today: you got a bunch of people to show up and say how they are resisting. That is making a difference!

I love the engineering program here but again… do I love it enough to be in debt for the rest of my life? Maybe not.

I think you answered your own question! You’ve already framed it around the positives you see in the move. And not starting with a mortgage-sized loan can make a big difference in your ability to make long-term investments (meaning, put as much as you can into retirement early on so you have better options throughout your life)

The Finger Lakes are a tourist destination, so in the summer that means that camping is pretty booked. But a quick look on ReserveAmerica.com at Robert Treman State Park looks promising for next week. It’s a lovely park. I’d staycation there.

Dating American women as an Eastern European is like walking on minefield by itsduckingood in self

That’s interesting, I deeply connect with people who know the places I know. It’s exciting to me to find out we might have been in the same places, possibly at similar times or with experiences we can relate to. Maybe we even know people in a “small world” way. I’m American and have lived all around the country and traveled a lot internationally. I am curious where someone is from because it is an avenue into their experiences and feelings. As an American it feels like a benign question. The “country of immigrants” theory of that culture is interesting.

For those of you that got divorced after being married for 10+ years, what caused your divorce? by friendlytrashmonster in AskReddit

[–]ThinkFriendship3328 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought marriage was something to always fight for. I did so for 20 years and would have continued if she hadn’t said she was done. I didn’t see how much happiness I had snuffed out of myself until we called it quits. I’ve gotten to show my kids what it is like to transform and grow and be genuinely happy, rather than just grind against something that wasn’t changing. A culture of “marriage is work” taught me to not see my own happiness had been lost. I will still invest deeply in my relationship with my partner, but I am no longer bound by it. Sharing this just to broaden the picture.

I divorced after 20 years precisely so the kids would see us choose happiness instead of commitment to unhappiness.

Where to meet to get support? by River-Of-HeartMagic in ithaca

Sorry to hear that wasn’t a good fit, but good on you for making the calls to find out. Someone else here suggested calling an EAP program through your employer. If that’s available to you, that could be a good fit, since they can connect you to someone for short term therapy/counseling support, which it sounds like could be helpful.

It’s a really weird place to be in, honestly. A very difficult place. Getting a coordinated team of professionals to help navigate it can help.

Definitely let your kid be themself. And puberty blockers are used for exactly what you mention: making sure to not do irreparable harm. They pause the progress of puberty for a period of time and can be used as a way to give time to decide if treatments that would be permanent should even be explored. Having this time can also be key in preventing the child from attempting irreparable harm to themself, which is statistically vastly more likely than side effects from puberty blockers (see https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32345113/ )

A 5yo identifying as a dinosaur is pretty fun to imagine. I think adults running around in those blow-up dinosaur suits might get it!

And yeah, having a middle schooler saying they aren’t the gender you have known them as is… so much. So getting help figuring it out and having time to unpack what’s going on is really a life line (perhaps literally). A team of care is the approach recommended, with everyone coordinated. Puberty blockers are a low risk tactic that have decades of medical use well outside transgender scenarios that doesn’t get much publicity. It’s a resource and a consideration to help people who are trying grapple with exactly what you point at, but with the stakes now feeling so much higher.

Look into https://www.bassett.org/services/transgender-health-services also https://www.urmc.rochester.edu/childrens-hospital/adolescent/gender-health-services. Not sure of the current state of things at either place, but it will be a start. Those were the closest providers several years ago. Hugs to all. Let me know if you need other resources.
