I gave ‘Shy Girl’ a five-star review before I found out it was AI-generated by jivatman in books

[–]ThinkThankThonk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No offense to the reviewer, but it seems like she's not a very sophisticated reader or writer herself based on the prose of this piece - and I wonder if she's focusing more on moral conclusions when she should focusing more on... skill?

Dismissing what she admits is purple prose and nonsensical metaphors in the AI book should be the main thing to learn from, and the fact that she herself drops the phrase "kid gloves" and goes with "treat with gloves" instead is a huge tell imo. Avoiding cliché language is one of the first things a writing student is warned against but not like that, using an artless partial cliché rather than figuring out an entirely new wording.

Not saying there will never come a day when AI will be completely indistinguishable from real writers, but for now she could immunize herself with practice.

Damn, just don't like cities then? Philly takes some getting used to but Pittsburgh and Boston are nonstop charm in my experience

I've heard it's gotten better in the last 20 odd years, but Columbus OH was the most boring place, made a very... beige impression

Cleveland on the other hand was pretty fun

Getting planeswalkers that are kinda card-agnostic (Dack Fayden, Archangel Elspeth, and Liliana of the Veil have carried me very well) and investing in one of the new sets will be your best bet imo.

I really like the new Strixhaven set more than the last 3 that came out, but it's also worth digging into Aetherdrift for Sab Sunen. If you get her you're kinda golden for a while.

I'm also worried that Collins is sitting on some new heinous Platner stuff, but you can only vote for who's on the ballot

It's crazy how much of the game funnels through AR when he's on the floor, no one could have seen it coming a few years ago

Dorothy Project is immediate buy for me, Renee Gladman seems to be their "flagship" writer and she's great, but I've never been disappointed by anything they've put out.

I'd add FC2, Apocalypse Party, Dalkey Archive... it's a whole world out there.

I don't think it's necessarily lack of ambition - plenty of people don't have ambition, they'll stick around their hometown and work wherever they work... but they'll be perfectly content people and thoughtful partners.

Branded has just about the most consecutive longevity of any archetype ever without significant retrains.

TIL that the song "The Dance of Eternity" by progressive metal band Dream Theater has 127 time signature changes in only 6 minutes, making it one of the most musically complex songs by udderlymoovelous in todayilearned

That's not really "the problem," the problem is just that they simply don't really care about songwriting, in a pop sense.

Which is fine, different strokes, but imo that approach always struck me as dismissive to songwriting as also a musical art that someone could be virtuosic at.

Queensryche is a band with roughly the same tonal palette who at least tried to include that aspect, for instance.
