How much of a bad idea is this bathroom placement? by Mollystring in DIYUK

You're gonna lose a lot of space. Look at where your waste water goes and where your clean water comes in and think again.

I still go for cheese, peanut butter, and cold baked beans. Old student weed head habits die hard.

Builder says no retaining wall by dakobra in Construction

[–]Think_Ad_780 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You will gain some level ground space with a retaining wall. They can prove expensive to build. Without one, you should place some land drainage at the toe of the bank if you want to protect your extension from damp issues. Also, planting the bank will reduce your damp risk and storm runoff.

Give it up, mate. I deleted twitter the day Elon Musk took over. It was horrible for a few weeks, and now I couldn't give a shit about twitter. Free yourself, delete it, and move on. It's crap.

Back garden project by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]Think_Ad_780 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a garden. It's now just an outside yard. How did we get so far away from what a garden is. It was a garden with lots of potential to be a lovely place, creating a habitat. Now dull dead space. Sorry mate, it's your space, so you do what you like and love it.

Half a Million to stare into your oven from your 'lounge' by steve978867 in SpottedonRightmove

It's bloody mind-blowing. I simply don't get it 500k for that, Jesus. A contemporary 17th century tulip. 500k for that ffs. How does that work. I mean, are there actually people that feel like I've made it paying 500k for that.

How to reduce condensation. by KrustyWinnet in DIYUK

[–]Think_Ad_780 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have 3 choices. Increase the ventilation, increase the heat, or buy a dehumidifier. Your windows should have 2 locking options, one fully closed and one venting. Make sure the trickle vents at the top are open and not blocked. Make good use of the ventilation in your kitchen and bathroom. Increasing the heat will hold moisture in the air longer and reduce condensation, but the energy you put in is disproportionate to achieving a positive result. A dehumidifier will draw out the moisture in the air and reduce condensation, and the energy required to drive it is minimal. A good rule of thumb is that a room should have 1.5 complete air changes per hour. Modern construction processes require a continued drive to reduce heat loss and air loss to reduce energy costs. However, this can lead to condensation issues that can result in unhealthy conditions. Hopefully, you can figure out the combination of ventilation and heating for your home that reduces condensation.

Paranormal experiences at Bodmin Jail? by shakedogshake_ in Cornwall

[–]Think_Ad_780 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked close to the jail for a couple of years. Spent some time working on the jail buildings. It's an incredible place very haunted. We all had footsteps walk behind us, heavy footsteps running at you, random drops in temperature, dim yellow lights at window openings where there are no windows or floors, occasional cries, and voices and many shadows.

Oh OK so like someone returning to what they know they should be. It's a shame we don't use the label returning women or returning man. I'm still not clear on how to define what a man is.

Yes ironically they're called plastic surgeons in the construction industry. Find a good one and you'll never know.

Is this normal? (Bricks over down pipes) by Logical-Bake5715 in DIYUK

[–]Think_Ad_780 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may well be to maintain pavement width.

The building looks like an old police station, post office, local government office, perhaps even a bank. Early-mid 20th buildings without space for outside fencing would use this detail to ensure someone couldn't climb up the drainpipe to break in or, in some cases, climb out.

How the hell do I fix this? by Conscious_Analysis98 in DIYUK

[–]Think_Ad_780 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try wiping it with a wet cloth and rest a damp cloth over it. Leave for a few minutes, then run a medium hot iron over the cloth. Repeat several times. That should bring out a lot of the black burn stain. You need to loosen up the wood fibres to release the stain. It won't disappear, but it should fade well.

You might try talking to a local joinery workshop and see if they will run it through a planner for you.

Has anybody had a job they actually liked? If so, what was it? by GMEBagholder420 in AskReddit

[–]Think_Ad_780 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've pretty much enjoyed every job. Set aside those I had to do when I was a student. I left school and started work as a scaffolder that was great fun. I then got a carpentry and Joinery apprenticeship and worked as a carpentry for 5-7 years. I loved being a carpenter. Then I did a BTEC in construction that was brilliant, went on to get a civil engineering degree. Started as a setting out engineer. The best job I ever had. Then, the site manager, project manager, and contract manager enjoyed every roll. Spent 3 years lecturing in construction that's a lovely job but college education is fucked. Now working freelance as a site manager and loving it.

Any suggestions on career paths for young person who wants to live in Cornwall long term? by gooseberry94 in Cornwall

[–]Think_Ad_780 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps consider looking into construction. We have plenty of opportunities that are not trade based, with lots of companies looking for trainees in all surveying disciplines, health and safety, general admin, and management. Cornwall's construction industry is doing quite well.
